CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary of Findings

The findings of the survey showed that the school performance depends more on the

students itself. It showed the different effects of video games to the school performance

of the students.

The school performance of the students who devoted much of their time in playing

video games has lower school performance. The student who doesn’t have enough

discipline has lower average. While the students who devoted much of their time

studying have higher average because their focus is only on academics. And students who

balanced their time have good school performance not just in academics but also the non

– academics part.

The survey also showed that most of the grade 8 students balanced their time between

playing and video games thus making their school performance good because they don’t

lack discipline.

Conclusions

The researchers conclude that video games affect the school performance of the grade

8 students although video game is not the main reason of poor school performance. There

are several factors affecting the school performance, video games is one but it is not the

main factor.

Students play video games for fun. For them playing video games can help them

release stress based on question 4. Releasing stress can improve student’s wellbeing that

can result to having better grades.

Most of the respondent plays video games with their friends thus promoting

Augustinian value, friendship. Having friends can help you in many certain ways

especially in school thus making a student better. The school promotes their values

because these values can help a student perform better not just in academics but also in co

– curricular.

Based on question 11, video games can cause students to forget their requirements

which can lead to poor school performance because once you’re late in passing

requirements it already has deductions and according to question 12, video games doesn’t

promote cutting class it may be caused by the strict implementation of the school

regarding cutting of classes.

Based on question 13 and 14, there are numbers of respondents who skip meals and

sleep. Students shall not skip meals and sleep because it is essential for the total

wellbeing of a person. Skipping meals and sleep can cause a student’s school

performance to decline.

Students who balanced their time also have average grade as stated in the result of

question 15 and those who devoted most of their time in studying have better grades

because their focus is only on academics.

Video games helps students perform better in school not just in academics but in

other ways too. Video games have different benefits to the students. It can enhance

different things like reflexes as proven by the past researches. Through this research, the

teachers and parents can have better understanding about video games and what are the

certain effects of video games to their children. And through the knowledge gained in

our research, it can help the teachers to improve their teaching methods that can improve

the school performance of their students.

The researchers also concluded that video games have benefits especially in gaining

friends that can help a student in his/ her study. The researchers also learned that video

games affect students based on their study habits. Video games don’t really cause a

student’s poor school performance especially on his/ her academics. Students shall have

their own discipline because video games is just for leisure and they shouldn’t sacrifice

the time for studying or doing requirements just to beat or finish a game because study is

more important than playing.

Recommendations

The researchers recommend having a follow – up research to improve the findings

about the topic. The researchers suggest tackling more about the effects of video games

to the emotions of the students. The researchers also suggest gathering more respondents

to formulate better and more accurate results. And the researchers suggest adding more

questions tackling about the study habits of the students. Through the results of the study,

the researchers recommend the results to be used in helping the grade 8 students in

understanding the effects of video games to their school performance. The researchers

also recommend studying the effects of video games to the other levels so all can benefit.

The researchers also suggest having separate study concerning academic and non –

academic so the researchers can focus more on the effects.
