Introduction:
Climate change is a big deal for the world. Many parts of the developing world are
experiencing erratic weather patterns that lead to drastic reductions in crop yields and rises in
the sea level are claiming many areas of low-lying lands. The effects of climate change are
already being felt across the globe. Climate for a particular area is generally determined by an
average of the sum of the weather of the last 25-30 years. Climate creates a prototype
ecosystem for the people to adapt. By using indigenous knowledge people adapt in their
environment. In course of time, human’s destructive attitude towards their nature and
surroundings brings the instability of the nature. Degree of the ingredients of the weather is
becoming to change. Increase or decrease of the rainfall for an area may hamper in their daily
practices. There may need to modify their different practices that are conditioned by the
rainfall. This practice is very much related to agriculture sector of the developing countries.
Though modern technology is using in agricultural sector in the developing countries, the
farmers are dependent on their traditional way of farming. They use their indigenous
knowledge and traditional attitudes in agriculture. However, the indigenous knowledge form is
modifying, rejecting or introducing new one on the basis of changed situation. There may need
of adaptive strategy, which should be revealed. Different local or global forces may act as
ingredients. So, indigenous knowledge, practices, and adaptive strategies in agricultural sector
in the context of climatic chance are grounded.
Objectives:
To reveal the factors and forces that acted as ingredients for that adaptive system.
Methods:
The research will follow some specific methods and techniques to meet the research demand.
Most methods rely on the people’s selective memories, but being there and able to describe
what actually transpired is indispensable. So, observation will be very helpful as a method for
this research. There are also in need of other supportive tools and techniques to collect data.
Key informant technique, interview and focus group discussion will be helpful for this study.
The Upazila Agricultural Officer (UAO) of the area will be one of the key informants. It is
done on the basis of the idea that he may be one of the knowledgeable person about the
practices of the farmers as his occupation is linked to it. The other key informant will be
selected on the basis of the conversation with UAO. If it has been seen that these key
informants are not helping much, on the basis of experience and field situation another key
informant can be used. Household census will be followed to identify the number of farmers’
household in that village. On the basis of this census twenty farmers will be selected for the
interview. In this selection age is a major indicator. The older farmer may be associated with
indigenous knowledge practices or they practiced more before the changed situation than
others. Some in depth interview from farmers will help to enrich data. In this study, any formal
questionnaire will not be used because of people’s hesitation about it. Moreover, formal
questionnaire might be bound the respondents to answer some specific questions. Thematic
Apperception Test will be used to grasp the village map. One or two focus group discussion at
the end of the work will be placed on to cross check collected data. It is also expected that new
approaches may arise to interpret data. Journals, newspapers, and research works, articles
related to this issue will be considered to grasp the view of the intellectual arena. These
sources will also help to construct the argument(s) in favor of the research or not.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, I would like to say that the research would be followed in anthropological way.
The issue will be grasped the indigenous knowledge, practices, and adaptive strategy in
agriculture on the concern of climatic change. The guideline proposed in this proposal may be
one of the ways to carry out the research.
