Case Summary and Module Questions

1) Jieliang proclaims, “Rules are dead, people are alive,” Provide all the examples from the case
where employees disobey the rules to be more efficient?

Jeiliang was using a shortcut on doing her tasks in precesion, She was always scanning multiple
barcodes in to the system instead of scanning each seperately. She did this to be save time and
energy and boots the speed of her tasks. She was saying her peers advised her to bring food
with her during night shifts, although It was not permissible to carry food in the factory floor.
Moreover, Whenever a pink hats or yellow hats were passing by jeiliang and her peers, the
stopped talking and they were suddenly say “yes I understand” to make them believe that they
were talking related to the work process.

2) Assess Jieliang’s motivation based on the three key elements outlined in Module 11?

The three key elements are energy, direction and persistence. She was an intelligent and
energetic person when doing her assigned work in the organization. She put high efforts to
complete her work quickly and she always have the mentality of get things done quickly. She
had a clear direction and goal which was to fulfill her parents wishes and to get enough money
for funding her brothers’ tution fee. She was also a persistent because she didn’t give up her
work even though it was really boring and humiliating by superiors. She was always motivated
and wanted to learn new things.

3) Using Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, assess Jieliang based on the 5 needs?

Assessing jeiliang based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, she satisfied her psychological needs,
Because she was getting physical requirements such as food, clothes and shelter. Furthermore,
the food that she was getting is limited or did not have the variety. She achieved her safety
needs because she was having a job and that provide her better wage to her position. She was
satisfied her social needs because we can see than in the case she have more loyal friends. In
addition, all her friends or coworkers were helping and motivating her. On the other hand, she
is still looking to satisfy her esteem needs because she was not in a good position or in her
company and she was considered direct labour (DL). going to the final needs which is Self-
Actualization needs, she was not Achieved those needs. There was no any growth for her in the
company and she was still in the same position .

4) Using “Theory X” as your framework, what do you see in this case? How would you use “Theory
Y” to structure work at Precision differently?
For the success of a company It is important to make the employees loyal and attached.
According to this case the employees were not satisfied with the company and they were
always complaining against the rules and regulations Which is affecting them negatively. In
this situation it is important to use theory Y to structure the work in precision. In order to
create an enjoyable work place the organization should set different activities to like 15
minutes of frequent break and motivation classes. In this case jeiliang felt that Precision was
very hierarchical. Even more the leaders were never let the DL’s have any requests and the
communication between lower level of employees and higher lever were very limited. It must
be avoided to create a wonderful workplace because it vital that employees should
communicate with their superiors. The company should be more flexible and should set a
communication system that let DL’s speak and communicate and report their problems with
higher levels. Moreover, I would recommend to install a feedback box in the factory floor that
employees can write their thoughts about the company and they can assist the possible
changes.

5) Using one or more of the modern approaches to motivation, provide your thoughts on changes
you would make at Precision in order to motivate employees?

In order to make employees motivated and encouraged, they should work on a goal-oriented
process. Therefore, it is a good method to give the employees extra earnings based on their
work achievement. For example, apple is giving extra additional payments to their sales
associates besed on their performance. That make them employees focused on the work and
stay motivated. Another method I would recommend is to make the work place more flexible
and relaxed to avoid the tiredness of the work. For reference, the workplace of google is more
advanced and have a lot of fun activities. As a result, the employee satisfaction is 95% in their
company.
