The Great Kapok Tree

adapted for Year 3 children at BIS HCMC

Two men walked into the rain forest. Moments before, the forest had been
noisy. Now, it was quiet as the creatures watched the two men. The larger man
pointed to a great Kapok tree. Then, he left.

The smaller man took his axe and hit the tree. Whack!
Whack! Whack! The sounds rang through the forest. The wood
was very hard. Chop! Chop! Chop! The man wiped the sweat
from his face. He felt hot and tired, so he sat down to rest.
Soon, he fell asleep.

A snake lived in the Kapok tree. He slithered over to the sleeping man and
hissed in his ear: “Senhor, this tree is my home, where my ancestors lived. Do
not chop it down!”

A jaguar padded silently over to the sleeping man. He growled in his ear:
“Senhor, the Kapok tree is home to many birds and animals. If you cut it down,
what will I eat?”

An anteater slid down the Kapok tree. She said to the sleeping man:
“Senhor, you must know that what happens tomorrow depends on what happens
today. Do you want your children to have a future without trees?”

A sloth plodded over to the sleeping man. She spoke in her deep and lazy
voice: “Senhor, can you live without beauty? If you destroy the beautiful
rainforest, what will you have to look at?”

Finally, a rainforest child knelt over the sleeping man. He murmured in his
ear: “Senhor, when you wake up, please see us all with new eyes.”

Suddenly, the man woke up! In front of him stood the rainforest child and
all the creatures of the great Kapok tree. The man saw strange and beautiful
plants. He smelled their fragrant flowers. He felt the steam rising from the
forest floor. But he heard no sound because the creatures were strangely
silent. The man picked up his axe. He was about to hit the tree. Suddenly, he
stopped. He turned and looked at the animals and the child. Then, he dropped
the axe and walked out of the rain forest.
