BFAR Region 4A Regional Director Sammy Malvas, in an interview last January 14, has warned of a possibility of a fish kill in Taal Lake due
to changes in temperature and acidity as a result of the Taal Volcano phreatic eruption. The possible fish kill, according to the official,
could damage 6,000 fish cages with an estimated production loss of 15,033 metric tons of Sardinella tawilis and Tilapia. DOH Assistant
Secretary Maria Francia Laxamana has also issued a statement strongly discouraging the public from eating fish from Taal Lake to avoid
food poisoning and other health problems.

The following observations were gathered during the actual price monitoring activities this week (January 13-17, 2020):

*There is no unloading of fish commodities from Batangas at the Navotas Fish Port this week, causing a major decrease in the supply.
Majority of the Tilapia at the fish port are from Laguna.
Remarks/Market Observations:
*The supply of Bangus remain stable this week. However, there is an observed minimal increment in the wholesale price due the decrease
in supply brought by the Taal Lake incident alongside the lesser market competition due to the absence of the supply of Tilapia.
*The supply of marine fishes, including local Galunggong "lalaki" (Decapterus macrosoma ), still remain very low at the Navotas Fish Port.
No price data was gathered for local Galunggong "lalaki" because the supply is being sold mixed with other marine fishes. Per
brokers/traders, the low supply may be attributed to the low volume of unloading at major fish ports caused by:
(a) the cold weather brought by Hanging Amihan, wherein the marine fishes normally stay on the bottom of the ocean;
(b) the occurrence of full moon last January 10, wherein the bright moon light causes the marine fishes to scatter;
(c) the lean season for the said commodities; and
(d) the implementation of fishing bans for some marine fishes including local Galunggong (Decapterus spp .) in
the Northern part of Palawan (per JAO No. 01 series of 2015), for Sardines, Herrings (Sardinella spp .), and
Mackerels (Rastrilliger spp .) in some parts of the Visayan (per Fisheries Administrative Order No. 167-3
Series of 2013), and for Sardines in some parts of Zamboanga Sea (per BFAR Administrative Circular 255).
*A large supply of frozen/imported commodities was observed at the Fish Port, majority of which are squid, salmon head, and
Galungggong.
