SOM- I: ASSIGNMENT – I: COLUMNS AND STRUTS (B. Tech.

2nd Year: 2019- 2020)

1. A T-section 150mm x 120mm x 20mm of 4m long is used as a strut hinged at both ends. Calculate the
crippling load, if Young’s modulus for the material of the section is 200 kN/mm2. (Please refer Fig. – 1.).
2. An I-section 400mm x 200mm x 10mm of 6m long is used as a strut fixed at both ends. Calculate the
crippling load, if Young’s modulus for the material of the section is 200 kN/mm2. (Please refer Fig. – 2.).
3. A 200mm x 200mm x 5mm hollow box section column is 5m long, fixed at one end and propped at the
σy
other. σ y =300 MPa . What axial load will cause failure if Rankine’s ∝=0.9 ( )
π2 E
. (Please refer Fig. – 3.).

4. Compare the crippling load given by Euler’s and Rankine’s formulae for a tubular steel strut 2.3 m long
having outer and inner diameter of 38mm and 33 mm, loaded through pin joints at both ends. Take the
yield stress as 320 N/ mm2 and the Rankine constant as 1/7500. E = 200,000 N/ mm2. For what length of
strut does the Euler formula ceases to apply.
5. Find the Euler crushing load for a hollow cylindrical cast iron column 20 cm external diameter and 25 mm
thick if it is 6m long and is hinged at both ends. E = 120,000 N/ mm2. Compare the load with the crushing
load as given by the Rankine’s formula, taking the constants as 550 N/mm2 and 1/1600. For what length of
the column would these two formulae give the same crushing load?
6. A cast iron column of a hollow circular section with an external diameter of 250 mm and a wall thickness of
45 mm is subjected to an axial compressive load. The column is 7 m long with both ends hinged. Taking
N
factor of safety (FOS) as 8, determine safe value of P. Take σ c =560 , Rankine ’ s constant−a=¿
mm2
1/1600
7. A 6-m-long RSJ of a rectangular section of 325 mm x 165 mm is used as a strut, with one end is fixed and the
other end is hinged. Calculate the crippling load by Rankine’s formula. Compare this with the load obtained
by Euler’s formula. For what length of this strut will the two formulae given the same crippling load for the
Joist? Take A = 5,490 mm2; Ixx = 9,874.6 x 10 4 mm4 ; Iyy = 510.8 x 104 mm4 ; E = 210 kN/mm2; σ c = 320
