Problem-1[20%]
A Rankine cycle with a water boiler at 3.5 MPa and the cycle have the highest and lowest temperatures of
450 oC and 45 oC respectively. Find the plant efficiency and the efficiency of a Carnot cycle with the same
temperatures.

Proble-2 [20%]
A large stationary Brayton cycle gas-turbine power plant delivers a power output of 100 MW to an
electric generator. The minimum temperature in the cycle is 300 K, and the maximum temperature is
1600 K. The minimum pressure in the cycle is 100 kPa, and the compressor pressure ratio is 14 to 1.
Calculate the power output of the turbine. What fraction of the turbine output is required to drive the
compressor? What is the thermal efficiency of the cycle?
Use; k=1.4 Cp=1.004 kJ/kg-K

Problem-3 [20%]
A diesel engine has a compression ratio of 20:1 with an inlet of 95 kPa, 290 K, state 1, with volume 0.5 L. The
maximum cycle temperature is 1800 K. Find the maximum pressure, the net specific work and the thermal
efficiency.
(k-1)
Use k=1.4 Cv=0.717 kJ/kg-K ; ; ηth-= 1-r ; r=v1/v2
T2 = T1(v1/v2)k-1

Problem-4 [20%]
In an air standard Otto cycle, the compression ratio is 7 and the compression begins at 35oC and 0.1 MPa. The
maximum temperature of the cycle is 1100 oC.
Use k=1.4 Cv=0.717 kJ/kg-K
T2 = T1(v1/v2)k-1

ηth-otto= 1-r-(k-1) ; r=v1/v2

Find
(a) the temperature and the pressure at various points in the cycle,
(b) The heat supplied per kg of air,
(c) Work done per kg of air,
(d) The cycle efficiency and
Problem-5 [20%]
Consider an ideal refrigeration cycle that has a condenser temperature of 45°C and an evaporator temperature of
−15°C. Determine the coefficient of performance of this refrigerator for the working fluids R134a.

Problem-6
Solar power incident on Earth is 1017 Watt. Compute fraction of mass as Earth lost by Sun in a year?
Earth Mass:
Use;
Earth Mass: 6.0*1024 kg.
Distance from Sun: 150*109 m.
Earth diameter:12.75*106 m.
Solution:

( Mlost/MEarth)*100 = E/c2 = 107W * (4*3.14*150*109 m2)*(106*365*24*3600s)/[(300*106)2 *6.0*1024 kg]

≈1.35%
