could name all Ten Commandments. Why not make a commitment to be able to name The
Ten Commandments? (PSALM 119:7-16)

2.) What does Galatians 2:15-17 say about being justified by The Law?

3.) What does Galatians 3:10-14 say about being justified by The Law? (See also JAMES

Q 57: Which is the fourth commandment?
A: The fourth commandment is, Remember the sabbath-day, to keep it holy. Six
days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh is the sabbath of
the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy
daughter, they man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy
stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and
earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the
Lord blessed the sabbath-day and hallowed it.1

1. Exodus 20:8-11.

Q 58: What is required in the fourth commandment?

A: The fourth commandment requireth the keeping holy to God such set times
as he hath appointed in his word; expressly one whole day in seven, to be a
holy sabbath to himself.1

1. Leviticus 19:30. Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.
Deuteronomy 5:12. Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded
thee.
Isaiah 56:2-7. Blessed isthe man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that
keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. Neither let the
son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly
separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree. For thus saith the
LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take
hold of my covenant; even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a
name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be
cut off. Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love
the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it,
and taketh hold of my covenant; even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them
joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine
altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.

Q 59: Which day of the seven hath God appointed to be the weekly sabbath?
A: From the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ, God
appointed the seventh day of the week to be the weekly Sabbath;1 and the first
day of the week ever since, to continue to the end of the world, which is the
Christian Sabbath.2

1. Genesis 2:2. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on
the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
Luke 23:56. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day
according to the commandment.
2. Acts 20:7. And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread,
Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
1 Corinthians 16:1-2. Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the
churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him
in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
John 20:19-26. Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors
were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the
midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his
hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them
again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said
this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: whose soever sins ye
remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. But
Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other
disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see
in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand
into his side, I will not believe. And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas
with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto
you.

Q 60: How is the sabbath to be sanctified?

A: The sabbath is to be sanctified by a holy resting all that day, even from such
worldly employments and recreations as are lawful on other days;1 and
spending the whole time in the public and private exercises of God's worship,2
except so much as is to be taken up in the works of necessity and mercy.3

1. Leviticus 23:3. Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy
convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.
Exodus 16:25-29. And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day
ye shall not find it in the field. Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the
sabbath, in it there shall be none. And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on
the seventh day for to gather, and they found none. And the LORD said unto Moses, How long
refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws? See, for that the LORD hath given you the
sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his
place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.
Jeremiah 17:21-22. Thus saith the LORD; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the
sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem; neither carry forth a burden out of your
houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded
your fathers.
2. Psalm 92:1-2. (A Psalm or Song for the sabbath day.) It is a good thing to give thanks unto the
LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: to shew forth thy lovingkindness in the
morning, and thy faithfulness every night.
Luke 4:16. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he
went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
Isaiah 58:13. If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy
day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not
doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words.
Acts 20:7. And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread,
Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
3. Matthew 12:11-12. And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have
one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How
much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.
Q 61: What is forbidden in the fourth commandment?
A: The fourth commandment forbiddeth the omission or careless performance
of the duties required,1 and the profaning the day by idleness, or doing that
which is in itself sinful,2 or by unnecessary thoughts, words, or works, about
our worldly employments or recreations.3

1. Ezekiel 22:26. Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have
put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the
unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.
Malachi 1:13. Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the
LORD of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an
offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the LORD.
Amos 8:5. Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that
we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances
by deceit?
2. Ezekiel 23:38. Moreover this they have done unto me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same
day, and have profaned my sabbaths.
Jeremiah 17:24, 27. And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith the LORD,
to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but hallow the sabbath day,
to do no work therein. . . But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to
bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a
fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.

Q 62: What are the reasons annexed to the fourth commandment?

A: The reasons annexed to the fourth commandment are, God's allowing us six
days of the week for our own employments,1 his challenging a special propriety
in the seventh,2 his own example,3 and his blessing the Sabbath-day.4

1. Exodus 31:15-16. Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the
LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. Wherefore
the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations,
for a perpetual covenant.
2. Leviticus 23:3. Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy
convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.
3. Exodus 31:17. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the
LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
4. Genesis 2:3. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested
from all his work which God created and made.
