In this activity the teacher will post pictures in the board. The students will try to guess the picture by the
context clues given to them.

2. Lesson Proper
1. Activity
The teacher will put paper under their chair. It has sentence in it. The students will then read it and find the
meaning of the underlined word from the words posted in the board.

2. Analysis and Abstraction

Context Clues
Definition
Context Clues --- are words in and around a sentence containing an unknown word. The clues
help us understand the meaning of the unfamiliar word.
---- are hints that the author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word.
--- pieces of information in the text that help readers understand words and details

There are four common types of


context clues to look for:
1. Synonyms
- A synonym, is a word or phrase with the same meaning.
Examples:
a. There was pandemonium, or chaos among the fans when their team won the Super Bowl.
b. The day had proven to be torrid. Before the sun had even risen, it was already hot outside.
2. Antonyms
- A word or phrase with the opposite meaning.
Examples:
a. David was very outgoing as opposed to his coy older sister.
b. Though many types of birds fly in groups, Eagles are birds of solitude.

3. Details
--give examples of the unknown word.
-- tell why the unknown word has taken lace
Examples:
a. It is our custom that the bride and groom only wear the finest raiment on their wedding day.
b. The woman enjoyed the savor of the soup. It had a hint of spices balanced with the perfect amount of
sweetness.

4. Rewording/Definition
-- when the author says the word in another way, that is typically easier to understand.
Examples:
a. The Ramos family moved from their dilapidated house, that was old and run-down, into a brabd new
home.
b. Insomia, not being able to sleep at night, can be linked to an excessive intake of caffeine throughout
the day.

Group 1
Directions: Read the following paragraph and do the exerccise below.

Aladdin was a poor Chinese boy who found a lamp. Each time he rubbed the lamp, a genie appeared. It
granted all his requests. Later, he married the beauteous daughter of the Sultan. The genie constructed a
wonderful palace fro the couple. But a wicked magician tricked the princess into trading the old lamp for a
new one. The magician asked the genie to transport the whole palace to Africa. Aladdin pursued them there.
At the end, he regained the lamp and restored the palace to China.

4. Resentment, a feeling of bitterness and anger, is often felt by people who are passed over for promotions.
5. She thinks the house is valuable but this is incorrect. The house is worthless.

3. Father was ecstatic because Joshua decided to go to the college that he wanted him to.
4. Jo was so exhausted, she could hardly keep her eyes open.
5. I was in doubt so Ludy explained the whole story to me.
