3 4

The user interface mainly consists out of:

• Model workspace ( 1 ) in the center. This is where the

model will be built (e.g. a hydraulic schematic or a signal
flow diagram).

• Library ( 2 ) on the right side. The library will be explained

on the following page.

• Parameters window ( 3 ) on the bottom. Parameters

describe the component properties and stay unchanged
during a simulation run.

• Initial states window ( 4 ) on the bottom. Initial states are

no parameters, they describe the changes of values in a
simulation such as the velocity of a moving mass or the
hydraulic pressure. They can also be predefined for the
start of the simulation.

• Project explorer ( 5 ) on the left side. Here, all the

components of a model will be listed. Furthermore a model
can be separated into more model sheets or the simulation
project can even consist out of more models.

4. Library overview and domain concept

1
3
Domains have
individual port
types in shape
and color!

• The Library ( 1 ) contains generic components of different

physical domains and a so-called Rexroth component
library ( 2 ).

• The main difference between the two is, that the generic
components have to be parameterized to represent a
certain component or effect of a real system or machine,
whereas the Rexroth components already use appropriate
parameters that are not changeable.

• They can be chosen by type like in the product catalogue

(drop-down menus are offered).

4. Library overview and domain concept

1
3
Domains have
individual port
types in shape
and color!

• The distinction of individual domains ( 3 ) for all the

component parts of the library is the basic philosophy of
this tool.

• The domain concept together with the connection method

is very useful for the set-up of a simulation model, which
will be shown in detail in section 4.

5. Components
Basics

Drag&Drop
2

• The Library has a preview section ( 1 ), that shows the

available components from the selected subfolder of a
domain, e.g. here the Hydraulic > Cylinders subfolder.

• You can add a component per Drag&Drop ( 2 ) from the

preview section into the model sheet.

• A selected component is highlighted ( 3 ) in the project

explorer and if so the parameters and initial states window
display the possible settings and options.

5. Components
Basics

Drag&Drop
2

• Every component on a model sheet is listed in the project

explorer within a certain model. The hierarchy ( 4 ) of a
simulation project is:

Project > Model > Sheet > Component (top down).

5. Components
Modifications

A component can be moved, rotated and copied etc. in a very

intuitive way similar to objects in MS Office applications:

• Move per drag with the mouse button pressed down on the
component or per keyboard with arrow keys for one or more
selected components.
• Rotate and flip with buttons of the layout toolbar ( 1 ).
Alternatively, you can also rotate a component by using the
green circle on top of its icon.
• Copy per keyboard short cut Ctrl+C and paste per Ctrl+V, per
main menu with Edit > Copy, per right-click mouse button
pressed down and drag, per button in the main menu or
finally also per right-click ( 2 ) and using the copy option.

5. Components
Modifications

• Rename per double-click or keyboard function key F2 at

the component name in the project explorer.

• Delete per keyboard key ‘delete’, per main menu with Edit
> Delete or finally per right-click and using the Delete
function.

• In case you have anything on your sheet at this point.

Please start a new project with an empty sheet for the next
section!

6. Model set-up
Adding components

Drag&Drop 2

• The model, that will be set up and simulated, is a simple

signal flow chart to start with.

• It is the calculation of the sum of two signal sources, a sine

wave and a ramp.

• The signal sources can be found under Generic

components > Analog > Signal sources ( 1 ). Place the
two components on the model sheet.

• The sum is a mathematical function and can be found in the

same sub library Analog > Mathematic functions ( 2 ).
Place this component also on the model sheet.

DC/ESS11 Page 18
Version 6.0

6. Model set-up
Recommendations

• A general recommendation is not to use a lot of

components in a single step during the model set-up.

• Model set-up or modeling does not mean that all the

components and parts of a system or schematic have to
be added to the model in one step.

• A Model set-up should be carried out step by step with

several simulation runs and tests in between.

• Later, the same is for parameter changes. Too many

parameter changes at the same time without a simulation
run in between makes a model hard to understand.

2018/03/24
DC/ESS11 Page 19
Version 6.0
Quick Start Guide Simster (6.1)

6. Model set-up
Recommendations

F1-
shortkey

• Another general recommendation is to make use of the

help function, especially when you extend the model
through a new or even unknown component.

• The direct way for this is the function key F1 ( 1 ) (the

desired component has to be already marked and
highlighted through a mouse click).

• Alternatively, the help can be opened through the top

menu under Help ( 2 ).

2018/03/24
DC/ESS11 Page 20
Version 6.0

6. Model set-up
Connection of components

• Please remember the domain concept from section 2.

Connections can only made between two ports of the same
domain between input and output port. Additionally an input
can be joined to an existing connection (line) of same
domain.
• You can also find out the type of a port, when you put the
mouse directly over the port (tool tip / without clicking on it).
• The connection steps are shown on the next pages,
please now browse through the single steps. Four steps,
resp. four mouse clicks are needed to connect this model.
• Of course you can also start with the input ports of the Sum
and connect them to the output ports of the Signal sources.

Parameters

• You have to click on a component to see the parameters in

the parameter window, whereas the selection of multiple
components is also possible as shown above (‘catching’).

• Please change the End time of the Ramp from 1 to 5

seconds ( 1 ).

• Then please change the Amplitude of the Sine from 10 to

3 ( 2 ).

2018/03/24

6. Model set-up
Parameters

• Some parameters have a unit, and the Unit column in the

parameter window offers a drop-down menu.

• When you change e.g. the unit for a time value from ‘s’
(seconds) to ‘ms’ (milliseconds), the time value is
converted automatically. This is very helpful, also for
international use.

• Analog values have no unit, because they are no physical

sizes.

• Later you will see a lot of components from other domains

that have analog input ports and that can use these sizes
(e.g. a hydraulic control valve).

1 3
2

• When the model set-up is completed, or also during the

model set-up for test purposes, the model can be
computed through the Start button Start Simulation in the
quick start toolbar ( 1 ).

• Alternatively the simulation can be started through the

function key F5 or with the main menu under
Simulation > Start Simulation ( 2 ).

• The simulation time stays here unchanged at 5 s, whereas

this value is also adjustable and commonly used ( 3 ).

1 2

• When the simulation runs, you can see the current time
step of the calculation in the status bar of the GUI ( 1 ).

• For a lot of models, and especially for this one, the

simulation run is very fast. This will change as soon as the
models get more complicated.

• In addition to the time, there is also a green progress bar

( 2 ).

9. Saving of simulation projects

• It is recommended to save the simulation project several

times during the work with the tool maybe by different
name.

• Sometimes it is also wise to save the work even during

model set-up, latest though before the first simulation run.

• You can save the simulation project with the quick access
button Save ( 1 ) or at the top menu under File > Save.

9. Saving of simulation projects

It is possible to save the simulation project with different

configurations ( 2 ):

• Project without results: the file size is minimized, but you

have to run once the simulation to view the plotted results.
No simulation results are stored in the model.

• Project with all results: the file size can be very large
(e.g. too large to be sent by email), not only the plotted
results but all results can be reviewed without rerun.

• Project with plotted results: the file size is rather small,

the plotted results can be reviewed, other results are not
available w/o rerun, since not stored in model.
