Errors of the Grade 9 – Mahogany students of CBSUA – Sipocot

Chapter I

Introduction

No wonder, we are living in the digital world where everyone is holding mobile phones.

Certainly, phones are a trend for years and continue to exist due to their accessibility and

convenience it offers. Due to the advent of technology, it makes our work and life easy. First, it

is just a significant and popular device for communication; however, it is not confined to that

purpose alone. It becomes a way of getting information, entertainment and many uses in just a

small device which we can say, it is considered as a need and inseparable asset for everyone.

The convenience of having a game played on your own mobile phone is so fascinating

where it becomes a way to past time and for entertainment like the mobile game, Mobile

Legends. No wonder, everyone is aware of the game because it is a game installed on the phone

which is handheld, accessible and easy to play. Mobile Legends is an online mobile game which

is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) for iOS and Android devices. It was developed by

Shanghai Moonton Technology launched last 2016 which was a game development company

based in Kuala Lumpur. How does Mobile Legends play? The goal of the game is to destroy the

opponent’s base or turret. It has 2 teams and each team is composed of 5 members with different

roles of the heroes like a tank, fighter, assassin, marksman, support, and mage [CITATION Kyl19 \l

1033 ].

Due to its popularity, the exposure of playing Mobile Legends is rampant nowadays. It

becomes a typical scenario in the school when they have free-time they will play the game and

even ask their classmates to play with them. Mobile Legends that implies to be recreational and
entertained students can affect academic performance parallel with the writing proficiency and

common writing errors since it is a sub-system of academic performance.

Writing is one of the indispensable skills in determining the literacy of the students as

well as a form of communication and it is considered one of the macro skills. The macro skills

are divided into two skills namely oral skills (listening and speaking) and literacy skills (reading

and writing). Another, receptive skills which are composed of listening and reading, the learners

receive the language then process and understand the oral or written symbols while the

productive skills which involve speaking and writing, the learners produce the language.

The macro skills follow a hierarchy process and learners need to develop the listening

skills first followed by speaking, reading, writing and lastly the combination of all, is the viewing

skills. On the other hand, the micro-skills are grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

Indeed, writing is a complex skill to master since you need to have proficiency in

receptive skills before you acquire productive skills to create own text. In writing, it needs the

background knowledge, vocabulary, word choice, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure at

the same time consider the purpose and target audience and sometimes, the learners typically

commit common writing mistakes and errors.

If acquiring writing proficiency is a challenging task, how about if the learners are

exposed to playing Mobile Legends how does it affect one writing proficiency and its ability to

identify the common writing errors. Though playing Mobile Legends has advantages; however,

when people heard the effects of Mobile Legends, they always think about the negative effects
first. Another, some of the studies claimed that playing online games is not a hindrance to the

academic performance of a learner.

Playing Mobile Legends is related to the context of the four macro skills. At first, players

just listen to the instruction given through audio at the same time read the instruction through

visual which are under receptive skills. Another, we tried to speak what we heard and became

aware of the structure, grammar, vocabulary or the micro-skills. Lastly, if the students can apply

what they experience in playing to their writing to produce something on their own. In this, the

learners recognize errors and have the ability to improve one writing skill and avoid common

writing mistakes in the future and this research seeks to answer the impact of playing mobile

legends to the writing proficiency and common writing error.

Statement of the Problems

This study entitled “The Impact of Playing Mobile Legends to the Writing Proficiency

and Common Writing Errors of the Grade 9 – Mahogany students of CBSUA – Sipocot” aims to

answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents who is playing Mobile Legends?

2. What is the level of writing proficiency of the grade 9 – Mahogany students in terms of

content, mechanics, composition, and organization?

3. What is the impact of playing Mobile Legends on the common writing errors in terms of

subject-verb agreement and word usage?

4. What is the significant difference between the writing proficiency of the Mobile Legends

players and non-Mobile Legends players?


5. What is the significant difference between the common writing errors of the Mobile

Legends players and non-Mobile Legends players?

6. Is there a significant relationship between playing Mobile Legends and writing

proficiency?

7. Is there a significant relationship between playing Mobile Legends and common writing

errors?

Objectives of the Study

The objectives of this study are as follows:

 To determine the profile of the respondents who is playing Mobile Legends.

 To assess the level of writing proficiency of the grade 9 – Mahogany students in

terms of content, mechanics, composition, and organization.

 To determine the impact of playing Mobile Legends on the common writing

errors in terms of subject-verb agreement and word usage.

 To determine the significant difference between the writing proficiency of the

Mobile Legends players and non-Mobile Legends players.

 To determine the significant difference between the common writing errors of the

Mobile Legends players and non-Mobile Legends players.

 To determine the significant relationship between playing Mobile Legends and

writing proficiency.

 To determine the significant relationship between playing Mobile Legends and

common writing errors.


Scope and Delimitation

The focus of this study is to determine the impact of playing Mobile Legends on writing

proficiency in terms of content, mechanics, composition, and organization and common writing

errors categorize as subject-verb agreement and word usage of grade 9 – Mahogany students.

The researchers select grade 9 – Mahogany students because of their availability.

Significance of the Study

This study will be undertaken to find out how playing Mobile Legends affects the writing

proficiency and common writing errors of grade 9 – Mahogany students of the Central Bicol

State University of Agriculture - Sipocot.

Benefiting the study are the various sectors as follows:

The Students

The research will benefit the students by knowing what are the impacts on exposure to

playing mobile legends.

The Parents

This study will be beneficial to the parents of the students because they will limit or

reprimand the use of mobile phones at the same time exposure to playing Mobile Legends.

The Teachers

This study will be beneficial to all teachers especially language teachers because the

students are exposed to correct pronunciation and correct grammar usage. It is also a good topic

in their writing to get them interested. Through this study, they will pay more attention to
developing their writing proficiency and correcting their common writing errors. This can be a

help for teachers to come up with a good strategy that can be used to immerse their students in

writing through relating it to their interest.

The School Administration

Through this, the school administration can formulate strategies or ways to lessen the

students’ problems with writing and common writing errors and other related problems in the

subject. Any improvement in students’ writing will contribute to the school’s development and

academic progress as a whole.

To the Future Researchers

The future researchers will benefit from this research that can be used as a source and

pattern in doing a study about how playing Mobile Legends affects writing proficiency and

common writing errors.
