TAPESCRIPT
DON’T WRITE ANYTHING ON THIS SHEET. Practice reading and study everything
under the line below very carefully before recording it.
Test One. I’m going to read the words below making sure that I produce the
vowel and consonant sounds correctly.
Test Two. The following words are often mis-stressed by Filipinos. Listen
carefully and find out if I am applying the primary stress on the correct
syllable.
Test Three. In this part of the test, I’m going to read some noun-noun or
adjective–noun combinations and try to put primary stress on the right part
of the compound.
Test Four. This time, I will read some phrases and sentences making sure
that I observe proper blending of words.
Test Five. Now, I will read the following tongue twister to test my English
speaking ability.
If you are a fine fellow and a friend of ours,/ you would refrain from being
tough or rough with our fine feelings/ by calling us “pine pillows” when you mean
“fine fellows,”/ “prince” when you mean “friends”/ or calling our jokes “punny”/
when they are really “funny.”/ Fellows like you are liable to peel our hands in
handclasp,/ instead of feel them./ We’d be afraid to feast with you in a restaurant/
for fear you would be putting the bill over us,/ instead of footing it yourself./ You
might wish to please us/ but we think you’d fleece us.//
So, dear fumbling, faltering, unphonetical pronouncing friend,/ face the fact
and don’t fake your phonetics./ Unless you fit your teeth between your lips, you’ll
have to lap this up,/ for you can never laugh it off.
