………..

B 5 1 1 A ladder of weight 390N and 6m long is placed against a wall at

an angle of 60° to the floor. The co efficient of friction between
the ladder and the wall is 0.25 and that between ladder and floor is
0.38. Find how high a man of weight 1770N ascend, before the
ladder begins to slip.

B 5 1 2 A ladder 5m long rests on a horizontal ground and leans against a

smooth vertical wall at an angle of 70° with horizontal. The
weight of the ladder is 900N and acts at the middle. The ladder is
at the point of sliding, when a man weighing 750N stands on a
rung 1.5m from the bottom of the ladder. Find the co efficient of
friction between the ladder and the floor
B 5 1 3 A block of weight W1 = 1290N rests on a horizontal surface and
supports another block of weight W2 = 570N on top of it as shown
in fig. Block of weight W2 is attached to a vertical wall by an
inclined string AB. Find the force ‘P’ applied to the lower block ,
that will be necessary to cause the motion impend. Take co-eff of
friction between the two blocks 1 and 2 as 0.25 and that between
block 1 and horizontal surface as 0.40.

B 5 1 4 What is the least value of ‘P’ required to cause the motion of the
system as shown in fig to impend? Assume the co efficient of
friction on all
contact
surfaces as
0.2.

B 5 2 5 Two blocks A and B are placed on inclined planes as shown in

figure. The block A weighs 1000 N. Determine the minimum
weight of the block B for maintaining the equilibrium of the
system. Assume that the blocks are connected by an inextensible
string passing over a frictionless pulley. Coefficient of friction μA
between the block A and the plane is 0.25. Assume the same value
for μB.

B 5 2 6 A block of 2 kN kept on an inclined plane is acted upon by 0.5 kN

horizontal force as shown in figure. The coefficients of friction
between the block and the plane are μs = 0.3 and μk = 0.25. Find
whether the block is in equilibrium or not. Also find the
magnitude and direction of frictional force
B 5 2 7 A block overlying a 100 wedge on a horizontal floor and leaning
against a vertical wall and weighing 1500 N is to be raised by
applying a horizontal force to the wedge. Assuming coefficient of
friction between all the surfaces in contact to be 0.3, determine the
minimum horizontal force to be applied to raise the block.

B 5 2 8 Determine the minimum tension in the rope required to support a

cylinder of mass 500 kg shown in figure below when the rope
passes (a) once over the rod shown and (b) two times over the rod
shown. Take µs = 0.2
