IOEX MODULE
An Input Output Expander (IOEX) card is available for the easy
interfacing of additional external equipment to Nu-Lec’s Pole Top
Control Cubicle (PTCC). This allows the power utility to connect items,
such as an external protection relay or an RTU, as required.

By using the IOEX card in conjunction with the existing capabilities of

Nu-Lec’s control electronics, an installation gains added flexibility.

The IOEX card has been engineered for safety and reliability. Optically
isolated inputs and voltage free output contacts give a high degree of
protection to external equipment. It is designed to mount onto the PTCC
radio tray and is provided in a fully sealed enclosure with a cable for
connection to the Control and Protection Module (CAPM) card.

The card is supported by standard CAPM software but custom software

can be provided at an additional cost. Nu-Lec Part Number: NO4-611

600 OHM INTERFACE

The 600 Ohm interface allows the V.23 port to drive external data lines (such
as twisted pairs) by providing 4kV of isolation to the line and 6kA of surge
withstand protection.

The Pole Top Control Cubicle (PTCC) incorporates a Control and Protection
Module (CAPM) that includes a V23 modem port as standard. However, this
unprotected interface is not suitable for driving data lines external to the
PTCC. Its use is restricted to driving radios mounted inside the PTCC.

This allows devices to be multi-drop connected to a single RTU or radio

located in substation applications without affecting the line impedance. Since
extra radios cost money and take up space, the 600 Ohm interface can be a cost
effective solution for substation applications.

The interface can be connected to a 4-wire or 2-wire line in either bridge or

termination mode. Bridge mode allows multiple devices to be connected to the
same line. The terminator mode is used to terminate the communications line.

The interface mounts onto the radio tray in the PTCC. A User Manual is
supplied explaining the installation and operation requirements.
Nu-Lec Part Number:
ELCTERM1-03 The correct protocol version must be loaded in the CAPM V.23 Modem to
allow the interface to operate correctly. Contact your Nu-Lec agent if unsure
whether your CAPM code version supports this protocol.

MANUAL TRIP CLOSE UNIT

The Trip and Close set provides a simple way to manually trip or close a Nu-Lec
pole mounted recloser when the control cubicle is unavailable. It does this
without having to use a mechanical device such as a hook stick.

With the Trip and Close set a supply utility can check the mechanical operation
of a recloser before installation in the field without having a spare control cubicle.

The set is a completely self-contained unit that operates from its own power
source, four "D size" batteries. It works by operating the recloser's trip and close
coils from capacitors mounted inside the case.

The unit is easily operated and instructions on its use are printed on the inside panel.

GAS FILL ADAPTOR
The Gas Fill Adaptor is employed to re-charge the SF6 gas insulant used
in some types of Nu-Lec Switchgear, such as the RL Series Load Break
Switch and N Series reclosers. Its simple design means it is easy to use.

The Adapter is designed to fit onto the gas fill valve located on the
switchgear through an injection nozzle. The device incorporates a
regulator which is connected to the SF6 gas cylinder (supplied by the
customer). A one metre length of hose connects the regulator to the on/off
valve and pressure gauge. A further nine metres of hose connects the
adaptor to the injection nozzle and switchgear.

The supplied pressure gauge is suitable to a maximum pressure of

100kPa. A relief valve is included for safety purposes, however, it will
not protect the switchgear from overpressure. A description of how to use
the Gas Fill Adaptor is included in the “Maintenance” section of the
switchgear technical manual.

FIBRE-OPTIC MODEM
Nu-Lec manufactures its own fibre-optic modem designed for use with Nu-
Lec products. It can be used for any application that uses the RS232 port at
speeds from 2400 to 19.2k baud. The modem provides electrical isolation
between two connected devices over a distance of up to 50 metres using
1mm plastic fibre-optic cable.

No special tools are needed to terminate the fibre-optic cable. Polishing or

stripping of the outer sheath of the cable is not necessary. The cable is simply
inserted into the connector and the captive nut tightened.

Power supply is 12-15 volts DC which can be supplied either through the DB9
adaptor or one of the two supply sockets on the modem. The spare socket can
be used to power other modems or equipment requiring the same voltage.

Two LED’s mounted on the modem provide an indication of data being

received and transmitted. They are positioned beside the fibre-optic
transmitter and receiver connection points for easy identification. The
modem is designed to mount onto the radio tray inside Nu-Lec’s control
cubicle using two self tapping screws. Two holes are provided on the

ELCOPTO2-01 the modem, details the installation and specifications of the unit.

REMOTE OPERATOR PANEL

This product was introduced to provide a dual control system for
Nu-Lec reclosers installed in Sub-Station applications. The user
interface is the same as in the Pole Top Control Cubicle (PTCC),
including the LCD panel and Keypad, with the same functionality
except the ability to isolate the trip and close function. Information
available at the PTCC, such as Event Logs and other demand
information, is also accessible at the Remote Control Panel.

The panel is supplied housed in an easily mounted enclosure, or as

a ready to install assembly suitable for mounting on existing sub-
station paneling. The standard control cable length is 50 metres of
optical-fibre.

A technical manual is supplied which describes the installation and

operation of the panel.
