Islamiat (Day 1) Week 3

Life in Madinah 11th & 12th year of Hijrat

1. (a) Describe the events of the final year of the Prophet’s life
Ans: - The 10th year of Hijrat is called Am-Ul-Wafd, the Year of Deputations because it was the
year that numerous tribes of Arabia came to the Prophet (p.b.u.h) to join Allah’s faith. The most
important event was the Prophet (p.b.u.h)’s farewell pilgrimage (Hajjat-ul-Wida). When he
decided to go to Makkah to perform the pilgrimage, he sent his companions to different parts
of Arabia to invite other believers to ask them to join him. He left from Madinah on the 25 th of
Ziqad, 10 A.H, with one hundred fourteen thousand of his followers accompanied him. On the
fourth day of the month, they reached Madinah. The Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) delivered his last
sermon in the plain of Arafat, near the Jabal-e-Rehmat., the (mount of mercy). This sermon is
not only remarkable but it is also significant because it contains an important message for
humanity. He said: “O people! Listen to my words; for I do not know whether I shall be in your
midst after this year. Remember that you shall have to appear before your Lord Who will
demand from you an account of your actions”. “O people! You have rights over your wives and
your wives have rights over you. Treat your wives with kindness. Verily, you have taken them on
the security of Allah and made them lawful unto you by words of Allah. And feed your slaves as
clothe your slaves as you clothe yourselves. If they commit a fault which you are unwilling to
forgive, then sell them for they are servants of Allah and not to be harshly treated”. “O people!
Listen to my words and remember that all Muslims are brother unto one another. As you are
one brotherhood, you will not take your brother’s belongings, which he will not give you out of
goodwill. Guard yourself from committing injustice”. “Behold, worship your Lord: offer prayers
five times a day; pay Zakat on your property; and preform pilgrimage to the house of Allah”.”
Let him that is present tell it to him that is absent”. With these words, the Prophet (p.b.u.h)
finished his address and the following revelation came to him: “This day have I perfected your
religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your
religion”. The Prophet (p.b.u.h)’s khutba showed that his mission was near the end and his
existence on Earth and that this would be his last hajj. It clearly showed that the Prophet
(p.b.u.h)’s mission had be completed and Islam was perfected. In his last sermon, he pointed
out in brief the duties and responsibilities of Muslims towards each other. He had laid a special
emphasis on the rights of women and that they must be treated with kindness. For the first
time women were given rights in the Arab society. He raised the status of slaves and made
them equal in the matter of food and clothing with their masters. By the 11 th Hijrat, faith
prevailed all over Arabia and peace was established throughout the peninsula. In the month of
Safar, the prophet (p.b.u.h) became ill and on the fifth day of his illness, he shifted to the
apartment of Hazrat Aisha. After an illness of thirteen days, he breathed his last on the 12 th of
Rabi-Ul-Awwal. His age at the time of his death was 63 years old. He was buried in the
apartment of Hazrat Aisha.
b) Explain how any two teachings given in the Prophet’s farewell sermon can help Muslim
communities today.
Ans: One of the teachings was that the slaves should be treated equally with their masters and
not in a harsh way because they are the slaves of Allah. Today, slaves are treated harshly for
example if they did something wrong, instead of Muslims forgiving them, they brutally hurt
them or vocal abuse them, which should not be the way for Muslims to be treated. They are not
given good food or clothes because people consider them dirty. They should learn from the
Prophet (p.b.u.h) to treat the slaves in a good way.
Another teaching was that we should guard ourselves from committing injustice. In modern
times, firstly, Muslim brothers and sisters are always fighting or doing injustice to one another
such as stealing but that should not be their intentions. We should learn to be respectful and
kind to one another.

Islamiat (Day 2) Week 3

Some Outstanding Qualities of the Prophet (p.b.u.h)

Q): Describe any two qualities of the Holy Prophet that make him a model of excellence.
Ans: The Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) was compassionate as he cared about others even if the person
disliked him for example there was a woman who used to throw trash on him when he would
cross the street. One day, she was not there so he inquired about her and got to know she was
unwell so he visited her at her house to ask about her health.
The Prophet (p.b.u.h) was a trustworthy person. When he was about to migrate to Madinah on
the night his enemies wanted to kill him, he told Hazrat Ali to return the belongings of the
peoples who trusted him including his enemies who trusted him to keep their belongings safe.
