C56/57/58/5900 + C86/8800 Toner Sensors

How do I find the Toner Sensors?

Locating the Toner Sensor on the C5000 / C8000 printers is easier than it was on
the old generation machines (C51/52/53/5400 printers), this time the Toner
Sensor is located on the right hand side of the drum instead of on the Toner
Cartridge itself,

The Toner sensor on the machine can be found sitting on the right hand side
panel of the machine on the inside, level with the sensor on the drum.

The sensor is enclosed in an oval shaped hole, this works in conjunction with the
toner sensor located on the right hand side of the drum. The 2 pictures below
show the sensor on the drum and on the machine for easier reference.

Toner Sensor Errors explained

A toner sensor error is displayed when the machine is no longer able to detect the
toner cartridge / drum unit, or is no longer able to determine how much toner is
left in these units.

How to clear the Toner Sensor Errors

When a C5000 printer displays a Toner Sensor Error, it is more than likely one of
three things causing the problem.

The first thing to look at is the toner sensor built into the side of the machine,
sometimes the sensor can get blocked with toner dust, in which case it will just
need cleaning out, see the pictures below to see where the sensor is located.
The Sensor on the machine is working in effect with the sensor located on the
Image Drum. As you can see below, the images show the sensor is located behind
the plastic disc on the side of the drum. To remove this, you can use a point of
some kind, like a pen tip, insert it into the gap between the disc and the drum,
and prize it away from the drum.

off

Once this cover is removed, give the silver arm a clean with a tissue of some kind,
this will remove any toner dust, or particles from the arm that could stop the
optical beam from the machine from reading the arm on the drum unit.

Once you have cleaned the arm, it will be worth checking the following, if you look
at the pictures below, you will see a black disc falls over the arm when the toner
cartridge is released from the drum, or simply if the toner has not snapped into
position properly, the first picture is what you should see with the drums cover off,
and the second picture, is a picture of what the drum should NOT look like.

If you look carefully at the second picture, you will notice just above the silver
arm, is a small black disc that has fallen from the top.

This disc stops the silver arm from being detected by the printer, the printer uses
an optical light to shine on the arm to see the cartridge. The result of the black
disc being in the way of the arm and sensor is that the machine will display a
Toner Sensor Error in response.

To fix this disc, simply push the toner cartridges blue lever to the right, so it is in
the locked position, if you are confident it will not go any further, use a pen tip or
pointed object, and gently push the disc up and away from the silver arm, this
disc will NOT drop back down after the drum is placed back into the machine,
unless the toner is released for changing or other reasons.

After all these checks are done place the cover back over the silver arm. It will go
back in the same way it came off, it should just snap on to the drum unit, if for
some reason the plastic snaps or will not fit back on, don’t worry! The plastic
piece will not stop the drum from printing; you can leave it off if you wish.

Now, install the drum and toner into the machine, and this should no longer have
the Toner Sensor Error on that colour, if it does still state this error, then contact
