Force Systems in Space

Proportion of components
In 3 dimensional force system, we will consider x,y & z coordinate. A force in space has 3 Fx/x=Fy/y=Fz/z=F/d
components, Fx, Fy & Fz.
d= √ x 2+ y 2 + z 2
Resultant of Concurrent Force Systems in Space
Components of the resultant
Rx=ΣFx
Ry=ΣFy
Rz=ΣFz

Magnitude of the resultant

R2=Rx2+Ry2+Rz2

Equilibrium of Concurrent Space Forces

Where: The resultant of all forces is zero
F= Force in space ΣFx=0
Fx, Fy, Fz= components of force F parallel to x,y, & z axes respectively ΣFy=0
Qx, Qy, & Qz = the respective angles Fx, Fy, & Fz components make with the force F. ΣFz=0

The sum of moment is zero

Forces in Space (3D Forces) ΣMx=0
Magnitude of a force F in space ΣMy=0

F=√Fx2+Fy2+Fz2 ΣMz=0

Components of a force in space Moment Of a force abount an axis

Fx=Fcosθx
Fy=Fcosθy
Fz=Fcosθz

Direction cosines
cosθx=Fx/F
cosθy=Fy/ F
cosθz=Fz/F
The component Fx which is parallel axis,it is impossible for fx to rotate the structure about the axis.
From the another point of view we could say that Fx intersects the X axis at infinity and therefore has
no moment arm about the axis. In any event, we conclude that has no moment about a parallel axis.
Therefore, the moment of F about the X axis we obtain,

Mx= Fy. Z – Fz . y

In general, the moment of a force about any axis is due to the components of the force lying in the
plane perpendicular to the axis of moments.
