MegaTech, Inc. Case Study

Q1. What is it about Project Management that offers Megatech a competitive advantage in its
industry?

Ans. In this case, Megatech is said to be new at Project Management. The company used Project
Management to cope well with the more dynamic and competitive market that new international
competitors brought about. The group sees that project management offers competitive
advantage to the firm in the following points:

 Special consideration to costs and guidelines drives teams to remain efficient while
striving for market advantage - Competitive advantage is not just about gaining more
people to buy one’s product than the competitor’s. A firm can also have competitive
advantage by gaining more output and generating more revenues through constant or
lesser inputs, than its competitors. This is efficiency achieved through the restraints set by
project management. In a way, it is as if the company is achieving market advantage
through limited-cost projects than the large-cost ones done and offered by competitors.
Saved funds, instead of being used to continuously produce current products, can be used
to work on new ones or to prepare for market trends in the future
 Faster response to market demands and trends - Project management, basically is just
like operations management except that the latter has a time limit. It is temporary. Given
so, teams work faster to develop existing, and release, new products as the market
demands it.
 Diverse ideas and practices for updating products from different people in new
teams - In Megatech, the company formed special project teams for each of the product
lines to make “innovative changes in operation.” In relation to one of the main aspects of
project management, project teams were composed of people from originally different
groups and expertise. It is just after the project’s duration when they are back to their
original “places”. Megatech can gain competitive advantage through gathering different
ideas from people of different sources, and combining them to thoroughly improve on
one specific product - something that usual operations do not usually do.

Q2. What elements of the marketplace in which Megatech operates led the firm to believe that
project management would improve its operations?

Ans. Enriched product knowledge of customers that lead to more dynamic demands for
innovation - This second element of the market place is also related to the first one. Since there
are new competitors in the market, not only is it that consumers now have more options to
choose from other than Megatech - they also gain knowledge of new trends in products different
from what they were used to in Megatech and can become more inclined to go after these trends
or demand something relating to these trends. For example, Japan offers something in its
automotive components that is unique to its own country and suddenly, customers latched on to
this new trend. If Megatech does not have something to counter it with or something greater than
this, it will lose its customers in a faster pace to the competition.

Sudden presence of more new international competitors - Due to the said changes in
international trade agreements in the case, Megatech has to cope with more and new competitors.
In other words, the first element in the marketplace that led Megatech to resort to project
management is the presence of more new competitors - international competitors with high
possibilities of offering something unique and attention-catching from what they have in their
own countries. Unlike before where Megatech relied on a stable market wherein it had stable
sales growth, now, the presence of new competitors made little- if not expel - room for stability.
