Sewage Treatment Plant at Kaggadasapura Volume 2-Employer’s Requirements

The Contractor shall provide a visual and audible alarm system. Flashing warning lights shall be
provided over each door of the Evaporator/Chlorinator Room store and The Chlorine Cylinder
Room. The lights shall be RED in colour and shall be clearly visible at a distance of 20 meters under
normal daylight conditions. They shall be activated automatically from the leak detection devices.
Behind the lights a rear engraved perplex label having red letters on a white background shall be
mounted at each door and at visible place. The lettering shall be a minimum of 50 mm high and one
legend shall read in English, and two others each in Kannada and English languages:

“DANGER:- WEAR BREATHING APPARATUS BEFORE ENTERING

WHEN LIGHT IS FLASHING”.

A calibration kit, 500 ml of electrolyte solution and 2 spare sensors shall be furnished with the leak
detectors.

3. Chlorine Safety Equipment

The following safety equipment shall be provided, which shall be common for the Chemical Storage
and Mixing areas and the Chlorine Building:
- Canister type respirators with full face coverage masks suitable for chlorine gaseous
atmosphere – minimum 6 each.
- Spare canisters for the respirators - minimum 6 each.
- Self-contained compressed air breathing apparatus (SCBA) complete with working whistle
and two spare air cylinders - minimum 6 each.
- A facility to recharge the compressed air cylinder or from a self-contained machine - 1 each.
- Protective clothing such as PVC overalls and gloves and rubber boots shall be provided -
minimum 5 sets.
- One (1) Safety Showers with Eyewash fountains with accessories shall be provided at the
Chlorine Building at easily accessible locations.
- Warning Lights – 5 each
- Hoses – 3 each
This equipment shall be stored in glass fronted non-locking steel cabinets so that any deficiency in
the equipment shall be apparent. Three 15 m long hoses 25 mm in diameter with jet and spray nozzle
and valve shall be provided near the Chlorine Cylinder Room and Chemical House in non-locking
steel cabinets. They shall be connected to the utility water system. The cabinets shall be located at
strategic places for easy and safe accessibility in case of a chlorine leak event.

4. Other Chlorination Accessories

Two (2) emergency drum leakage repair kits shall be provided in the Chlorine Building Storage
Room.
An automatic shutoff valve (2 duty + 1 spare) shall be provided for each Chlorine Cylinder on the
Chlorine Scale.

5.11.12 Bore Wells

Bore Wells shall be provided for pumping fresh groundwater to an Overhead Tank located on top of a

building or on a separate RCC support structure as necessary to provide the required elevation and
water pressure. The Bore Wells and Tank system shall be designed such that the stored water can be
used for multiple applications including but not limited to alum and polymer solution preparation,
chemical cleaning operations, human domestic non-potable needs, laboratory needs, and other general
cleaning and flushing needs. The water system shall be designed to provide adequate water pressure
for all of the above applications.

5.11.13 Mechanical Sludge Thickeners

The Mechanical Sludge thickeners shall be designed as per design parameter specified in the tender.
The Mechanical Sludge Thickeners shall be operated at Design Solids Loading Rate of 80% of that
specified in Metcalf & Eddy for the selected thickener device (centrifuge / gravity belt thickener) and
shall be designed to thicken the surplus sludge produced from secondary biological treatment process.
The mechanical sludge thickener shall thicken the secondary sludge to 4.0% minimum TSS
concentration (dry solids basis). Polymer solution should be added in the sludge to improve thickener
performance. Thickened sludge shall be directly collected or conveyed through belt / screw conveyors
to a sump / hopper having 4 hour retention time, and then pumped to 2 Nos. of mechanical sludge
dewatering units (1 duty + 1 stand by)using Thickened Sludge Pumps continuously/ intermittently as
required. If a gravity belt thickener is used, then the sludge can be directly discharged to a belt filter
press to avoid thickened sludge storage and pumping.

The filtrate from the thickener shall be recycled to the inlet of Aeration Basin Distribution Chamber by
gravity if possible or otherwise by pumping through filtrate / supernatant sump.

5.11.14 Thickened Sludge Pumps

Thickened sludge pumps shall be provided for pumping of thickened sludge to the sludge storage
tanks.

5.11.15 Sludge Storage Tanks

Sludge storage tanks shall be provided to store the thickened, undigested sludge. The storage
tanks shall be provided with fixed concrete covers with the gas space vented to the atmosphere. No
heating shall be provided for these tanks. The tanks shall be designed to provide all of the following
functions:
• Thicken undigested sludge by settling and decanting of supernatant
• Store sludge for periodic feeding to the centrifuges

5.11.16 Thickener cum Dewatering Building

Thickened sludge pumps shall be provided in Centrifuge building for pumping of thickened sludge
from the sludge storage sump to the centrifuge / dewatering machine.
The Building shall be provided along with dewatering centrifuges and all associated/ancillary
equipment, including sludge feed pumps, a complete polymer system, dewatered sludge conveyors,

sludge storage/loading hoppers, and truck access and loading facilities. Sizing of the centrifuges and
all related equipment shall be based on the operating schedule specified in Paragraph 5.12 –
“Design/Sizing Criteria and Other Requirements”.

5.11.17 Plant Drain Pump Station

A Plant Drain Pump Station shall be provided to collect solids processing recycles and other
miscellaneous waste flows such as cleaning and wash-down flows generated in the plant and pump
them back up to the headworks for treatment through the plant.

5.11.18 Administration, Laboratory, Maintenance, and Other Related Buildings/Facilities

An administration building, a laboratory, a maintenance workshop, a storage facility, a guard house,

and other miscellaneous buildings and related equipment and furnishings shall be provided as needed
for a fully functional facility and as described elsewhere in the bid documents.
