MOTOR SURGE COMPARISION TEST

Scope This procedure is to familiarize technicians with the purpose and proper use of
equipment to inject and display a surge on two winding of a motor simultaneously.

Definition 1. Surge - A sudden application of voltage with a steep wave front.

Special Equipment 1. A special test instrument specifically designed to apply a surge to one or two
windings and to display the results of this surge on a cathode ray tube.

2. A stable power source for the test instrument (normally 120 or 240 volts AC)

3. Test equipment manufacturer’s instruction books.

Procedure

Step Action

1 Discuss the acceptance testing and applicable safety standards with

Owner/Owner Rep. and workmen to insure the safety of all personnel.
Do not perform this test in an explosive atmosphere. A welding-type
permit is required for this test.

2 Disconnect the motor from its power source. The leads may be part of
the test specimen, but problems with them will show on the analyzer as
well as the motor.

3 Connect the analyzer as shown in the manufacturer’s instruction book

and test all phases.

4 Judgment and experience are required to analyze the results obtained

with this test.

5 A separation of the two wave forms will be an indication of a problem.

When this appears while testing a motor, slowly rotate motor shaft to see
if the wave forms will fall on each other.

6 The output from this test instrument can injure or kill its operator.

7 To test a single winding such as a coil, two of the three leads can be
connected together and the machine used. The proper wave shape is
shown in the test equipment manufacturer’s instruction manual.

8 This test may also be used to test any two similar windings in
transformers, DC motors, etc.
