SES 266 FitnessGram Assignment

50 Points

Purpose:

As a future physical education teacher or coach, it is important to model best practices for all aspects of the profession.
This includes NASPE Standard #2, skill-based and fitness competence, where candidates are physically educated
individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to demonstrate competent movement performance and health-
enhancing fitness. Indicator 2.2 states that candidates must achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness
throughout the program. In SES 266, you will demonstrate the “achieve” portion of this standard by participating in the
FitnessGram assessment. Achievement for each area of fitness is delineated by a “Healthy Fitness Zone” score.

Part I Questions:

1. Look at the HFZ scores relative to your pre-test goal scores. How do they compare? Are you being realistic
with your current level of fitness and the goals you’ve set forth?
I tried to set my pre goals higher than the HFZ scores or at least equal to that number. I always like to challenge
myself and make sure I am giving my best effort. I am being realistic with my goals and hope I can demonstrate
them and be successful in class. I look forward to seeing how I compare to my fellow classmates. This is a great
opportunity to see where we all are as professionals.

Part II Questions:

1. How did your actual scores on test day compare to the HFZ scores? Which areas are you in the HFZ for and
which do you need to work on?
I feel like I tested well on test day compared to the HFZ scores. I was able meet all areas for HFZ accept for the
push up section. I missed being in the zone for pushups by only 3 repetitions and feel confident I can improve
this score easily in the future.
2. How did your actual scores on test day compare to your pre-test goal scores? If there was a difference, why?
I was able to meet most of the goals I set for myself. The only goals I did not meet where for the pacer test and
the pushups. I came very close to meeting but these goals and with a little focus to these categories I can
improve them easily.
3. What, if anything, was surprising to you about the tests?
I was surprised by how difficult it was to go from running the pacer to completing the rest of the tests during the
class. I was not expecting that part to even be an issue.
Part III Questions:

1. In one year, you will repeat the FitnessGram tests to demonstrate that you “maintain” a health-enhancing
level of fitness. What can you do over the next year to meet the Long-Term Goals you’ve set for yourself in
the table for each test?
Over the next year I can help meet my long term goals I have set for myself and maintain a healthy lifestyle by
continuing to work out regularly. UNC has a great rec center with great equipment to help build strength and
provides a great area to condition. This will allow me to better myself in the areas I need to improve for future
testing and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
2. Discuss your thoughts and opinions about physical education teachers/sports coaches and the idea that they
should (or should they?) be physically fit individuals.
I do believe that physical education teachers should most definitely be physically fit. There is no better way to
help students see the benefit of working out then to lead by example and show students that working out can
be fun. This ultimately will help students chase the healthily lifestyle we as educators try to make students love.
It is not always easy to find time to work out as a teacher but it is a necessity that not only helps the students
but helps you as the teacher feel great physically.
