Contextual Description
(Eaton High School)

Physical Education Equipment Inventory:

After visiting Eaton High school on multiple occasions to observe classes we were able to learn
about the physical education equipment that is available in this school. There are three different
equipment rooms located in this high school. The main equipment room was located in the main
gym and this is where most of the main equipment we will be using during the semester is
located. The other equipment rooms were located in the male and female locker rooms and we
did not take any pictures of these locations. The pictures below were taken in this main
equipment room and show the equipment available. We had spoken to the teacher and learned
what we were teaching for our units so we took pictures to highlight the equipment that we will
be using mainly during our time at this school. However, we also took pictures to show the full
size of the room and show the full range of equipment as well. There is also a brief description
for each image to help demonstrate an inventory of what's available to us.

The lock was located on the outside of the door but was unlocked when we entered the
equipment room. It will be important to make sure this is unlocked each day so we can get to the
necessary equipment for each lesson.
Once entering the equipment room you could see how excited I was to dive right in and see what
we had to work with. This photo shows just how large this equipment room was. There are yoga
balls and mats present in this picture as well.

We will be teaching a volleyball unit during our team at Eaton High school so we thought it
would be important to find not only the volleyballs available but also the netting. The volleyballs
were in good condition and all of them were inflated properly. There was also enough volleyball
in the cart for each student in our class to have their own if necessary. The netting was badly
tangled and we might need to go in a class period before and untangle the nets so they can be
used for class.

The other unit the teacher mentioned us teaching was basketball. So we thought it would be
important to see what basketballs were available to use. The balls were mostly inflated some
could definitely use some air before starting the unit. There was also enough basketballs in the
cart for each student to have their own ball to use if needed. The other thing we wanted to find
for this unit was jerseys. We were able to locate a bag of pennies in the room. There were
blue, yellow, green, red, and orange jerseys that were all clean and ready to be used. There were
enough jerseys in the ball for our entire class to be able to have one if needed.
These are some other photos that were taken above that show some of the wide variety of
equipment available to us at this school. There are resistance bands, field hockey equipment,
soccer equipment, and badminton equipment all located in this room as well. Not pictured but
present is the box of frisbees for the ultimate frisbee unit. There were enough frisbees for every
student and a partner to have a frisbee.

● Gender 52% Female 48% Male or 284 Female and 262 Male
● Graduation Rate 96%

School Demographic Reflection-

Eaton High School after doing some research and doing some observations is your typical small
town school. The enrollment of 546 students is quite small from what we are use to. I feel like in
this condensed environment everyone knows everyone and the relationships between students
are likely different than a school with a higher enrollment. The minority enrollment is also
interesting as close to ⅓ of students are in this category. If you look at the chart listed above 26%
of these students identify as Hispanic. It is important to know this information to possibly
included more visual pieces in our lessons and to always include a demonstration so all students
can have an equal opportunity to understand what is being taught to them. Also ¼ students at this
school are labeled economically disadvantaged and it will be important to understand this and
work with the students to try and give them the most positive experience possible. Something
that really surprised me is that there is a 96% graduation rate at this school. This shows that
students at this school are willing to work hard and at least show up and try to get the job done!
Community-
● Population 5,529

● Number of parks- 9
Community Demographic Reflection-
The community of the town of Eaton is what you would expect from a small farm town. The
population is small enough that everyone can know everyone and that is pretty unique in today's
world. This tells me that most of the kids in this area likely grew up with one another and have
connections that you might not find in a larger town. The other thing about this is that the entire
town supports the schools sports teams. After talking to our cooperating teacher she mentioned
that all the athletics programs the school offers have great support from the local community. It
is good to know that that the community places value in students being active and participating
in extracurricular activities at the school. The other thing about this community is that it provides
plenty of resources for students such as a library, parks, and even a recreation center. It is
important to know what resources are available outside of the school for students!

Medical-1

After observing the class we will be teaching during multiple classes there are some things that
stood out. The class size is what we expected with 29 kids if every student is there. This is a
great number to be able to complete lots of great activities We also saw that there were 4
students with IEPs but we did not notice ant behavior from students that would indicate this in
any of the classes we observed. The one student with a medical issue has some vision issues but
she is one of the most outgoing adventurous students in the class. Some modifications will be
necessary for her as we continue to work and teach with this class.
