I want to thank you for downloading this

eBook, “ Goals: SMART Goals
Simplified - Time to Make Your
Personal and Career Goals a Reality ”
and sincerely hope the book helps you in
fulfilling the purpose you chose it for.
Well, it is common knowledge that every
individual needs to have a goal. The vast
majority of people these days are
struggling a lot to achieve what they
want. This happens because even if they
have goals they don ’ t really know the
way to achieve them. There are just a
few people in this world who know
what exactly they want and the exact
way to achieve these objectives of
theirs. This minority forms those
individuals who know how to achieve
their goals.
Goal is the end result to be achieved. It
is the aim, the ambition. To be stated
simply goal is something which the
individual is trying to achieve. There are
different types of goals. The first one is
personal goals and the second category
is career goals. Personal goals are what
the individual wants to achieve in
his/her personal life. A personal goal is
what the individual wants in life.
The personal goals can be very varied
from wanting to have peace of mind to
buying your dream house. It can be
defined in quantitative and qualitative
terms. Whereas the career goals are
what the individual wants to achieve in
terms of their career; their career
ambitions and aspirations. The position
they want to hold in future. To attain total
satisfaction in life there needs to be a
balance between these two goals which
are equally important.
The process of setting goals isn ’ t
difficult and the way to achieve them
isn ’ t difficult either if we spell down
the steps defines our objectives and
work towards them. One thing a person
needs to keep in mind while is that
chasing just one type of goal will not
give the sense of achievement in life.
Having fulfilled all your career
objectives and non of your personal
objectives will leave the person feeling
frustrated and even if it is the other way
around, having accomplished one and
the other still being a goal will not
provide the individual with the feeling
of satisfaction.
And as my way of saying thank you for
downloading my book I’ve included a
Limited Time Bonus Video at the end. I
hope you get as much value from it as I
have and trust you get real value from
my book. I hope you enjoy it

Chapter 1: Steps To
Developing SMART Goals
The new age concept of SMART Goals
is a unique concept. It hardly takes any
effort, helps the individual realize his
goals and then work towards achieving
them. The best way to ensure that an
individual is working towards achieving
his goals is to write them down. Yes it is
as simple as that. The concept of
SMART Goals is actually an acronym.
In the word SMART each alphabet
stands for a different concept. And each
of these concepts will help the reader
understand the significance of setting
goals and what can be done to achieve
them. The full form of the word SMART
in the concept of SMART Goals is as
follows:
S stands for Specific
M stands for Measureable
A stands for Attainable
R stands for Realistic
T stands for Timely
These are the five concepts which are to
be carefully thought over about while
setting goals and also while making a
plan to achieve them. The one important
part of every individual ’ s life should
be a plan. A plan gives a sense of
direction and also prepares the
individual for the worst situation
possible and also the most optimistic
way to lead life. Yes plans are not
always a good thing, there needs to be
spontaneity but also a sense of direction.
Before we begin the process of setting
SMART Goals let ’ s just analyze the
importance of doing so. These goals are
important because they help in figuring
out the true dreams and aims of an
individual and a detailed process as to
go about achieving these said goals.
There are five steps to achieve goals and
the purpose of this reading is to ensure
that the reader knows
What the steps are?
And how these steps are to be applied to
attain success?
Chapter 2: It Must Be
SPECIFIC
The goal set needs to be specific. A
specific goal is an aim which is
presented or stated in an exact or precise
manner. To set a specific goal there are
six questions which need to be
answered. These six questions not just
make the individual think about the goal
but what is it that they want to exactly
achieve in life.
A specific goal has a greater chance of
being accomplished than a general goal.
Before we try to answer the questions
about a specific goal the difference
between a specific goal and a general
goal needs to be understood. The
difference can be easily understood with
the help of an example.
A general goal would be a generic
statement like “ I want to lose weight ” .
Whereas a specific goal gives this
general goal certain specifications,
like “ I want to lose weight by joining a
gym and exercising 5 times a week and
also by maintaining a healthy diet for 3
months ” . Let us take a look at what
these six specific questions are as
follows:
Who?
The first question helps you think about
the person who is involved. There might
be a goal which can be achieved with
the help of someone apart from oneself
and there are certain ones which can be
achieved by an individual itself.
What?
The second question which needs to be
answered is what is it that you want to
accomplish. Like in the above state
example the “what” in that goal is the
aim to lose weight. Defining this helps in
solving half the problems.
Where ?
The third question is to identify the
location where this goal can take place.
Continuing the above illustration, the
location which is specified for achieving
that goal is the “gym”. It is essential to
decide upon the location because every
goal needs to have a specific location
where that goal can be achieved.
When?
The fourth question is to decide the time
or the duration for achieving the goal.
That is to establish a time frame. A goal
without a time frame makes no sense.
Every goal needs to have a time frame or
else it might not even be a goal. In the
above example the time frame for the
goal specified is 3 months. The
individual who set the goal wants to
accomplish it within 3 months.
Which?
The fifth question which needs to be
answered for a goal to be a specific goal
is to identify the requirements and
constraints. If the constraints are
identified them steps can be taken to turn
those constraints in ones favour. If all
these are identified then the specific
goals can be easily accomplished.
Why?
The reasons behind the specific goal
need to be identified. If a goal has no
significance then there will be no
purpose to achieve those goals. The
purpose of achieving the goals is the
motivation behind accomplishing the
goal. If an individual wants to lose
weight there are certain benefits which
drive him towards accomplishing that
like the said individual wants to look
better. The benefit which motivates him
is better looks. It might even be a health
reason.
This is the first step set to achieve the
specific goals. If you are not sure about
what your specific goal is supposed to
be then the best way to figure this out is
by just jotting down your various
aspirations. These need not be really
specific or even elaborate. The goal can
be big or small. It does not matter, what
matters is figuring out the specific goals
and then working towards achieving the
said goals.
If you are not sure or have much clarity
about what is to be done, then maybe the
best way of figuring it out is by self
introspection and setting aside some
quality time for thinking and analyzing
the various aspects of your life.
Chapter 3: It Must Be
MEASURABLE

The aspect of measuring a goal is a

tricky subject. But it is quiet easy when
you break it down in to simpler question
like
How much?
How many?
The realization, when the goal is
accomplished?
All these questions help in the better
understanding f a goal and the
formulation of a better plan for
achieving the same. The first two
questions deal with the quantitative
aspect of the goal set.
Let us consider the example where there
is an individual who wants to lose
weight in two months. The aspects
which are missing in this illustration are
that there is no weight specified which
needs to be lost. “ Have to lose weight ”
is a very vague statement. Whereas the
statement “ Have to lose 15kgs in 3
months ” is very specific.
Here, the said individual will know that
he has attained the desired goal of his if
on the culmination of three months he has
indeed lost 15 or more than 15kgs of
weight. This is how a goal can be
measured. This would be a personal
goal. The only person who will benefit
from it when the goal is achieved is the
said individual and no one else.
Whereas, if we consider a career goal,
the individual can do so in terms of
money. A career goal which is set by an
individual would be to earn 40% more
than what he is earning at present in the
next two years. This is a measureable
goal.
A goal needs o be measureable only then
will there be a parameter to ensure that
the goal has been accomplished. And the
sense of satisfaction which one gets from
fulfilling a goal is priceless. This
satisfaction cannot be bought or sold. If
your goal is a clear goal then the
realization that the goal has been
accomplished would b quite visible.
But if your goal happens to be a more
complex one then it would be
considered easier if it is written down.
You can mark your progress, record it
and in the end measure it. But what is
completely indispensible is the fact that
the goal needs to be written down. It
cannot just be thought over in your head.
Only this way will you be able to put it
in quantitative terms.
If you have set yourself a goal for losing
weight in three months then what can be
done is to maintain a weight loss journal
which will help you keep a track of your
exercise regime, your diet and also the
efforts you have put into achieving the
decided results. This is motivation
enough to work hard towards achieving
the said objectives. It is human
psychology to try and measure things.
The sense of gratification when your
said goal can be measured and the
satisfaction you get when you have
attained the goal are quite priceless and
that feeling cannot be replaced by any
other feeling in the world. The motive
behind attaining the goal is not
necessarily immaterial but that is the
driving force which will help you in
attaining the predefined objective. But
the main aspect for this step to be
effective is that the goal needs to be
specific.
A general goal cannot be quantified and
there will be no parameter to judge
whether the said goal has been achieved
or not. If in the above illustration if the
individual who is setting the goal has not
mentioned anything about the duration of
the period or the weight he wants to lose
then the goal cannot be quantified and
the realization of accomplishment will
never come to the individual. Hence it is
of utmost importance to ensure that the
said goal can be defined in quantitative
terms and aspects.
Chapter 4: It Must Be
ATTAINABLE

The specific goal set should be

attainable. A goal can be said to be
attainable if one can accomplish or
achieve it. That is it should be possible
to reach an end. For something to be
attainable it is necessary that a lot of
thought process has been put into
deciding whether or not the said goal
can be achieved. The goal needs to be
very specific and it cannot be
unattainable. If a goal is unattainable
then it makes no sense to plan for it.
Once you set a goal you start thinking
about the various ways in which you can
attain those goals.
The first step to determine whether or
not a goal is identifiable is to ensure that
the goal can be defined. Once the goal is
defined you will start looking for the
various possibilities and the ways in
which the goal can be achieved and the
various skills and resources, which are
at your disposal and which will help you
in accomplishing the specified goals.
If you realize your strengths then you can
work upon them to attain better results. If
there are any weaknesses which you
could identify then the necessary steps
can be taken to rectify the said
weaknesses. Only when you identify
your weak points will you be able to
take specific steps to ensure that you
have overcome those and also eliminate
those traits which act as a hindrance to
achieving those goals.
The most essential aspect of ensuring
that your goal is attainable is to make
sure that you have planned out and have
listed down all the details which need to
be taken into consideration for achieving
these goals. So what needs to be done is
very simple. The plan to attain the goals
needs to be set.
Once the plan is set the time frame to
achieve it needs to e decided. If both of
these can be done, then the said goal can
be attained. Once you start thinking
about attaining a goal, you start
exploring the various ways in which you
can achieve this goal. You start thinking
about all the previous factors which you
might have overlooked. All these things
help you discover your true potential.
Let us take an illustration of a person
who wants to start his own company in
the field of distributing textiles. When
this is his goal there are various aspects
he needs to look into. The first one
would be the financial assistance which
is required to set up the business. The
people with whom he can start the
business, the channels of distribution,
various people from whom the textiles
can be procured and so on.
While doing this the person whose goal
this is might just realize some skill of his
which he was not aware of. And setting
a time frame ensures that there is some
standard to which the individual is
supposed to adhere to.
Once you start planning out your goals,
the goal which might have seemed to be
far out of reach or even farfetched might
not seem that distinct. It might seem
closer and it will surely seem possible.
It will be a goal which can be attained.
This happens because you start seeing
yourself grow, you push yourself
towards greater opportunities, towards
better spaces and this does not mean that
your goal is shrinking it. It just means
that you are growing. It means that you
have started working hard towards
achieving something which just a while
ago was just a possibility a mere dream.
When you list down your goals, you see
yourself grow too you build up your self
image. You start behaving and acting in a
certain manner which is necessary for
the person who wants to achieve the
specific goal. If you want to see yourself
as a manager in one of the firms then it is
essential that you start acting and
behaving like one. That is you should
start demonstrating those traits and
exhibiting those characteristics and
thinking process which is worthy of a
man who wants to be the manager.
Only once you start making yourself
worthy of your goal will you start
envisioning yourself attaining that goal.
The approach which you adapt while
working towards your goal needs to be
very practical. An impractical approach
will just result in a dead end. A practical
approach is an approach which will help
you in attaining your goal; it will bring
you closer to your goal.
For deciding a practical approach you
can brain storm on your own or else
even consult with someone who is
already well established in the said
field. Because only once do you have a
plan of action will you be able to start
working towards your goal. Your goal is
your dream and the plan is your lifeline
to achieve that dream. Therefore you
need to make sure that the plan you have
made is very clear and practical. It will
be simpler if you just write down the
points and then work towards achieving
those aspects.
While you talk about attaining your goal,
you should ensure that you are self-
motivated. That is there will not be
anyone who will keep motivating you
throughout this process. Ultimately it is
you who has to achieve this goal and no
one else. You should develop those
characteristics in yourself which will
help you reach the goal. The route
towards achieving this goal is not
simple. There will be a lot of obstacles.
But what you need to realize is that you
are your own support system.
When in doubt take a break and try
thinking of a fresh outlook to reach your
goal and you could always look up to
others for guidance. What you need to do
is keep moving on. Not to give up. The
goal is always attainable if you have
planned it out properly. You can almost
attain any goal that you have put your
mind to.
Start looking at all those aspects which
have been overlooked by you, develop
upon your strengths, overcome your
weaknesses, and take note of all the
resources which are at your disposal. If
you can do all this then you are very
close to attaining those goals of yours.
Chapter 5: It Must Be
REALISTIC

The goal needs to be realistic. A

realistic goal is a goal which has the
quality of being very close to real life
that is the quality of being real. For a
goal to be realistic you should ensure
that it is something towards which you
are willing and able to work. The
realism of a goal is a concept which is
very subjective. What might seem to be
realistic to some might just be
unrealistic to others.
You are the only one who can decide
your own goals. You are your own
constraint. Your goal can be high and
realistic at the same time. You are the
only one who can decide how high your
goal might be. What you need to ensure
throughout this process is that your goal
is realistic and can be attained.
The goal cannot be unrealistic. A goal
like owning a unicorn is highly
unrealistic, since the creature in question
does not even exist to begin with. What
does not exist cannot be owned. The
goal can be both high and realistic and
like mentioned before you are your own
constraint. But do ensure that your goal
is realistic. It need not be realistic to
others.
It just needs to be realistic for you.
Owning a business of your own might
not seem feasible to others but it might
be realistic enough for you to work
towards attaining it. For realizing your
goals you need to get your unconscious
as well as conscious mind on board. The
unconscious mind is the subconscious
which stores things like the more long
term aspects of your life. The next step
is to develop a clear plan of action and
take all necessary steps to ensure those
goals. Do not take up goals which are
unrealistic, you do not wanting to be
chasing things which are highly
impractical and are unworthy.
Chapter 6: It Must Be
TIMELY

The goal NEEDS to have a time frame.

That is the goal should be time bound.
While deciding your goals please make
sure that you have set a time frame for it.
The time frame can be short term or long
term. A short term goal is something
which needs to be attained in the
foreseeable future.
A long term goal is something for the
attainment of which you need to work for
a longer duration of time. But whatever
the goal is it needs to be time bound. It
cannot be a vague idea. If a goal is not
time bound then the very purpose of
having a goal is defeated. Time frame
helps you have a deadline.
People tend to work better when they
note that they have a deadline. They
work more effectively and efficiently. If
a person says that he wants to lose
weight, it is a very generic statement.
But when he says that he wants to lose
weight in the duration of 2 months he
makes a specific statement which is time
bound.
The goal when it has a time limit
becomes more practical. Seems to be
more realistic and true!It helps you push
yourself harder to achieve those goals.
While deciding upon a goal there should
be a specific time limit set. It shouldn ’ t
be “ sometime ” . It should be a proper
quantitative limit. Not a vague statement.
When you start doing something while
keeping the end result in mind you tend
to be more successful. Because you
know the result you are working
towards. The end product will be your
reward. Your mission! But the time
frame set is completely dependent on
you. Do not set a time frame which is too
relaxed. Set a timeframe which will help
you work harder than usual.
If you have ever noticed, students tend to
study harder right before their exams
than a month before their exams. This
happens because they know what is
impending. And it is in human nature to
slack if there is no time frame and work
harder when there is one. When a
project has a deadline you know that you
need to submit it before the lapse of the
given deadline. This shows that you are
accountable to someone. While setting
your own personal or career gals, you
are answerable to no one. You are
answerable to your own self and no one
else. Do not take this as a reason to
slack. Because disappointing oneself is
greater disappointment than anything
else.
You are your own leader, your own
support system, your own coping
mechanism and your own master. Ensure
that you have written down your time
frame along with all the things which
you need to do to attain your goal. And
also make sure that you keep checking
the timeframe every day. Keep
reminding yourself about the fruit of
success which is waiting for you at the
end of all the hard work you put into it.
Let it motivate you. Make sure you
adhere to the time set, do no cheat.
Because the only person whom you will
be cheating is your own self and no one
else, which is a terrible thing to do!
There might not be anyone to supervise
you, but your own supervision and
monitoring is sufficient to help you attain
your goal.
The T in the SMART Goals might also
stand for Tangible. The acronym seems
to have different meanings according to
the different people who have tried to
define it. The goal must be tangible.
Something is said to be tangible when
you can touch, feel and look at it. The
goal is said to be tangible if you can
measure and see your goal that you have
achieved. For example if a person states
that his goal is to buy an Audi after 4
years then it is safe to say that his goal is
tangible. That is after four years he can
touch and see his goal. Not all the goals
are tangible. The goal to attain peace
isn ’ t a tangible one. Just because your
goal isn ’ t tangible doesn ’ t mean that
your goal isn ’ t a real goal. All these
concepts are subjective.
Following these simple steps you can
make your goals a reality. You can
achieve what you want. What you have
always dreamt of. There is nothing to
stop you. Do not give up hope. At times
the going gets tough; difficulties arise, be
quick on your feet, alter the plan
accordingly but do not give up on your
goals. These goals are your ambition.
They are your property. No one has any
rights over it. So do not give up and
keep working towards achieving those
goals.
Conclusion

So to state the entire above mentioned

thing in brief it can be said that there are
five steps to attain goals. Five steps to
attain both personal and career oriented
goals. These five simple steps when
followed piously will help you attain all
your goals; your career goals as well as
your personal goals.
There is no one to stop you apart from
yourself. Let your imagination run wild,
feel free to write down your goals
according to the abovementioned
manner. Make it elaborative. Make sure
that your goal is specific, measureable,
attainable, and realistic and also time
bound. Your goals are your ambitions,
yours and no one else. Do not lose hope,
do not give up.
If you have hit a dead end, take a while
to figure out where to head next, figure
out an alternative route. Firstly decide
about what it that you want, just you and
no one else is. After deciding what is it
that you want set a clear goal and write
it down. Writing it down will be like
setting it in concrete. Making it seem
more real. Making it more attainable!
After this you need to get your
unconscious mind on board.
Your unconscious mind plays a major
role while deciding what is it that you
want to achieve. After this have a plan
and take massive action. Ensure that you
have a plan and also that you are willing
to take massive steps to reach your goal.
It will take a lot of effort and the key is
to not give up.
Do not have a plan which is not flexible.
Nothing is constant in this world.
Everything is transient. Things change,
factors change. So it is extremely
essential to ensure that the plan is not set
in concrete. The plan should allow for
flexibility. It is essential for an
individual to grow, learn and change.
If the plan is concrete then following it
at times would be extremely impractical.
The goal should be fixed. The time
frame should be fixed. The plan of
action can change according to the
surrounding circumstances. Your goal
should be your own goal. You might
have people to guide you, to advice you.
But you are the only one who can
achieve it.
