Chapter 1: Steps To
Developing SMART Goals
The new age concept of SMART Goals
is a unique concept. It hardly takes any
effort, helps the individual realize his
goals and then work towards achieving
them. The best way to ensure that an
individual is working towards achieving
his goals is to write them down. Yes it is
as simple as that. The concept of
SMART Goals is actually an acronym.
In the word SMART each alphabet
stands for a different concept. And each
of these concepts will help the reader
understand the significance of setting
goals and what can be done to achieve
them. The full form of the word SMART
in the concept of SMART Goals is as
follows:
S stands for Specific
M stands for Measureable
A stands for Attainable
R stands for Realistic
T stands for Timely
These are the five concepts which are to
be carefully thought over about while
setting goals and also while making a
plan to achieve them. The one important
part of every individual ’ s life should
be a plan. A plan gives a sense of
direction and also prepares the
individual for the worst situation
possible and also the most optimistic
way to lead life. Yes plans are not
always a good thing, there needs to be
spontaneity but also a sense of direction.
Before we begin the process of setting
SMART Goals let ’ s just analyze the
importance of doing so. These goals are
important because they help in figuring
out the true dreams and aims of an
individual and a detailed process as to
go about achieving these said goals.
There are five steps to achieve goals and
the purpose of this reading is to ensure
that the reader knows
What the steps are?
And how these steps are to be applied to
attain success?
Chapter 2: It Must Be
SPECIFIC
The goal set needs to be specific. A
specific goal is an aim which is
presented or stated in an exact or precise
manner. To set a specific goal there are
six questions which need to be
answered. These six questions not just
make the individual think about the goal
but what is it that they want to exactly
achieve in life.
A specific goal has a greater chance of
being accomplished than a general goal.
Before we try to answer the questions
about a specific goal the difference
between a specific goal and a general
goal needs to be understood. The
difference can be easily understood with
the help of an example.
A general goal would be a generic
statement like “ I want to lose weight ” .
Whereas a specific goal gives this
general goal certain specifications,
like “ I want to lose weight by joining a
gym and exercising 5 times a week and
also by maintaining a healthy diet for 3
months ” . Let us take a look at what
these six specific questions are as
follows:
Who?
The first question helps you think about
the person who is involved. There might
be a goal which can be achieved with
the help of someone apart from oneself
and there are certain ones which can be
achieved by an individual itself.
What?
The second question which needs to be
answered is what is it that you want to
accomplish. Like in the above state
example the “what” in that goal is the
aim to lose weight. Defining this helps in
solving half the problems.
Where ?
The third question is to identify the
location where this goal can take place.
Continuing the above illustration, the
location which is specified for achieving
that goal is the “gym”. It is essential to
decide upon the location because every
goal needs to have a specific location
where that goal can be achieved.
When?
The fourth question is to decide the time
or the duration for achieving the goal.
That is to establish a time frame. A goal
without a time frame makes no sense.
Every goal needs to have a time frame or
else it might not even be a goal. In the
above example the time frame for the
goal specified is 3 months. The
individual who set the goal wants to
accomplish it within 3 months.
Which?
The fifth question which needs to be
answered for a goal to be a specific goal
is to identify the requirements and
constraints. If the constraints are
identified them steps can be taken to turn
those constraints in ones favour. If all
these are identified then the specific
goals can be easily accomplished.
Why?
The reasons behind the specific goal
need to be identified. If a goal has no
significance then there will be no
purpose to achieve those goals. The
purpose of achieving the goals is the
motivation behind accomplishing the
goal. If an individual wants to lose
weight there are certain benefits which
drive him towards accomplishing that
like the said individual wants to look
better. The benefit which motivates him
is better looks. It might even be a health
reason.
This is the first step set to achieve the
specific goals. If you are not sure about
what your specific goal is supposed to
be then the best way to figure this out is
by just jotting down your various
aspirations. These need not be really
specific or even elaborate. The goal can
be big or small. It does not matter, what
matters is figuring out the specific goals
and then working towards achieving the
said goals.
If you are not sure or have much clarity
about what is to be done, then maybe the
best way of figuring it out is by self
introspection and setting aside some
quality time for thinking and analyzing
the various aspects of your life.
Chapter 3: It Must Be
MEASURABLE
