Chapter One
Getting Started with Used Coffee Grounds
Most people know the benefit of having three 8-ounce cups of caffeinated
coffee every day. It is good as a source of magnesium, potassium, vitamin
B3 and antioxidants. To protect your teeth from the acid in coffee, it is a
good idea to rinse your mouth with tap water than wait half an hour to
brush them.
The best way to store fresh coffee beans or grinds is to place the small
airtight plastic bags in the freezer, but when opened, place the left over
coffee in an airtight glass or ceramic container in a dark, cool place.
We haven’t thought about the benefits of used coffee grounds outside our
body. Most of the world consumes about 3 cups a day, per person,
creating about 7.6 millions tons of used coffee grounds per year. Most of
the coffee grounds go to the landfill as waste, but there are creative ways
to recycle and reduce coffee grounds to have a better health, beautiful
skin, and a clean home. Recycle Coffee Ground & Reduce Waste for a
healthier and enrich your life.
Refrigerate or freeze grounds from your daily brewing until you have
enough used coffee grounds for a large batch. If you don’t drink coffee
yourself, or you need more grinds than you will have, plan ahead and go
to your local coffee house to ask them for their used coffee grounds.
You could dry your used coffee grounds by spreading them out on a
cookie sheet near a sunny window. Alternatively, you could put the coffee
grounds in an aluminum foil pie plate then place them in a cool, dry area
until they are completely dry. Then you are ready to create wonderful
things with the Used Coffee Ground…
Chapter Two
Homemade Coffee Scrubs
Here are a couple of homemade coffee scrubs. Be sure to mix together the
dry ingredients in a bowl first, then add the wet ingredients.
Store each mixture in a sealed container and refrigerate when not in use.
When you use the mixture, apply in a circular motion on wet or damp
skin to scrub off dry dead skin cells and reveal soft, smooth, firm skin.
The best time is to use in the shower. Use sparingly to prevent your pipes
from clogging. Another method is to scrub into skin and then rinse off
after 15-20 minutes to help tighten your skin.
Since these are fresh and natural ingredients, the shelf life is only a couple
of weeks for most of the coffee scrubs. Use the scrub at least once or twice
in a week.
Note: Don’t use brown sugar scrubs on your face or neck which can tear
or scratch the skin.
Key:
• Brown sugar to rejuvenate your skin and gently exfoliate without
drying
• Coffee Grounds to natural exfoliate skin

Improve Your Garden with Coffee Grounds
Nourish your houseplants and garden the natural way. Mulch some coffee grounds for
acidic plants such as tomatoes, carrots, roses, blueberries, azaleas, rhododendrons,
evergreens, hydrangeas and camellias. Work into the top inch or two of soil of the plants.
They like coffee grounds for the natural acidity and nutrients they add to the soil. Also,
this would help to keep down weeds.
To encourage carrots to grow, mix seeds with dried coffee grounds before sowing into the
soil. The extra bulk makes the seeds easier to manage while the coffee nourishes the soil
and repels pests.
To grow mushrooms, put coffee grounds in a glass container and press a mushroom plug
into them and repeat until you run out of room. The cellulose in the coffee grounds are
material most fungi thrive on, which is good for mushrooms.
To keep pests out of your garden, sprinkle coffee grounds around the area of the
infestation to keep pests at bay. You could also place the coffee grounds directly on
mounds or trails, around house border and garden plants to repel ants, snails, slugs.
Reapply after vacuuming and mopping, or after a rain. But you have to use a LOT of
coffee grounds for it to be effective against snails and slugs.
To improve your worms count for your compost just add a couple of worms or two to your
container plants and coffee grounds. 1 tablespoon of grounds coffee for each inch of pot
once a month is a great addition to your plants. The grounds offer compost, acidity and
food for the worms. You could also toss in the coffee filter too in the compost pile. Also,
take a coffee ground with soil and worms with you when you go fishing to keep the bait
worms alive all day.
Feed the Animals
You can feed coffee grounds to cows, chicken and pigs as a stock feed supplement.

Make a homemade fertilizer mist for your garden by adding 1/2 cup of grounds coffee and
warm water in a spray bottle.

odors and leave your hands feeling smooth, and soft. Turn one of your shaker containers
to a dried coffee ground shaker, so it could be within arm reach around the sink.

coffee ground your plants would work fine too. But be careful when you have
dogs/puppies because they would dig up the garden and get themselves very sick on
coffee grounds. So put in area where the dogs are not attracted to or have your garden
fenced off.

Simplify Cleaning Dish and Cookware
For ovens, grills, greasy pots and pans, rub some coffee grounds onto dirty cookware
using a scouring pad. The added abrasion will help to remove food remnants off your
dishes/cookware without a lot of elbow grease and harsh chemical cleaners. Don’t try this
on non-stick pans as the coffee grounds can damage the finish. Also it can be used to clean
surfaces as well with dry coffee grounds and sponge. Just test a small area for
colorfastness before cleaning the entire surface.

Brew ten cups of used ground coffee then pour the liquid coffee without the grounds into
the washing machine with a load of black colored clothing.

To reduce the mess of cleaning your fireplace, sprinkle it with a layer of damp, used coffee
grounds over the cooled ash, which will weigh down the ash and it will be easier to
remove the clouds of smoky dust. You sweep each interior wall top to bottom with
fireplace brush then shovel the ashes into a pan and dump into the trash. Another thing is
to add the ash and coffee grounds to the garden. Ash has alkaline in it which is good for
soil that is lower in pH 7.0. Do not add to your compost.

sealed off. The smoke from the coffee grounds will neutralize the odors so you can clean
the room. When the smoke is clear, you can go in.

medium-brown color. Then remove the grounds with a mesh strainer, reserving your dye
for later use.

your desired intensity of color. You could also simmer coffee grounds in a sauce pot, then
place boiled eggs in the dye water, turning occasionally until you get your desired color.

vinegar to 4 cup dye water. Leave the vinegar out until you are ready to set your color
fabric. Boil the coffee dye and when is full boil turn off the heat as soon as the coffee
reaches a full boil. After the coffee stopped bubbling, submerge your fabric in the coffee
dye and leave it in there for anywhere from 20 minutes to one hour. Stir it around a bit
with a wooden spoon. Use your hairdryer to check it color on the fabric. If not to your
desired color than return it to the dye bath. When ready to set your fabric, add the vinegar
