Values & Career Integration Reflection

The career that I am pursuing in is as an Elementary Teacher preferably for the grades

kindergarten through second. Once I get my degree in Educational Studies there is a few more

steps before I can start applying to become a teacher. In order to get here I must complete the

teacher preparation program to obtain certification for preferred grade level I want to teach.

Though this program I will be able to gain the experience needed to work with students through

volunteer or part-time positions. I will need to take the certification exams that are required for

the state that I will be teaching in. I do plan on staying and living in California, and their

requirements are the CBEST, CSET: Multiple Subjects, and RICA test. If I want to get a higher

may it is best to earn a master's degree. I am still thinking about if I want to because I do

eventually also want to open up my own daycare business. I have learned before that it is very

important to at least join one of the following organizations, National Education Association,

International Reading Association, to understand about up-to-date issues in the field. The most

important skills to have as a teacher are communication, creativity, imagination, and patience.

Being able to efficiently communicate with students, staff, and parents is major when it come to

this career because these are people you are in contact with daily.

The results on both my personality and strengths test support my career development. I

believe that each test result characteristics will not only benefit me, but the people around me.

The reason I say this is because the JMB results stated that I am “warmly enthusiastic”. I do see
this in myself and others have told me I am very caring person and I like to make sure that

everyone else’s needs are being fulfilled. This is an advantage for me because naturally I will

make sure that no student is falling behind and they are getting the right support that fits their

specific needs. In the Strengths Quest self-assessment, I received the five strengths of, futuristic,

belief, significance, ideation, and responsibility. With these strengths it will help me be able to

make things happen, take charge, speak up, make sure others are heard, and analyze information

that informs better decisions. I know that I am going to be able to provide a comfortable,

warmhearted, and safe environment for each student that walks through the doors on my future

classroom.

Since High School I always thought about my future life and how I wanted to live. My

career choice does fulfill the lifestyle I have always wanted. I believe having two siblings that

had children at a young age affected the way I think. I felt like I had to do everything in life the

“right” way in my parent’s eyes. By this I mean the order on how I did things with school,

marriage, travel, finding my career, and when to start a family. I always planed on continuing my

education at community college then transferring to a university which I have accomplished.

Next, I plan on finishing my education and finding a job as soon as possible to start my career. I

am so blessed and grateful to have already found the person who I want to spend the rest of my

life with. Therefore, I’d hope we can get married once we are both financially secure. I would

like to be able to travel with my significant other before we begin to have children.

Not only do I feel like my lifestyle associates with all of the University of La Verne Core

Values but I would like my future family to learn and practice these values as well. I would like

them to be aware when traveling around the world to take in all the cultures and how they live

and think into consideration. Also I want to be able to make sure that the school I apply at also
have some kind of values like these at the school. I feel like it is very important for the children

to have knowledge on these concepts because the younger they learn them the more they will be

able to share to others.

As a person who has been thinking about their future for a while, this assignment didn’t

change any of my career or lifestyle goals. Although it did help recap what I needed to do after I

finish getting my bachelors, and it was a way for me to see that I am right on track. It encourages

me to see how well I’ve been doing even with the struggles I’ve had through the years. There are

going to be many more challenges to face in the near future but I believe that anything is possible

if I put my mind to it. It was nice to write out my goals and plans for my future because I can

now look back at this assignment when I accomplish the next step and be proud that I was able to

do it.
