Music Theory: Variable Topics 18
Welcome to Community Music Center. In January
we will begin a year-long celebration of our 90th year at
Capp Street. 2011 is also our 28th year of making music
at our Richmond District Branch on 30th Avenue. During
this anniversary year we reaffirm our mission of making
high-quality music instruction and performances avail-
able to people of all ages and backgrounds. We believe
that the joy of making music belongs to everyone.

People come to Community Music Center to take pri-

vate lessons in 30 different instruments, play in en-
sembles ranging from a large string ensemble to vocal
workshops and jazz, blues and Latin groups, or simply
to practice or attend a concert. We encourage people
to make music together and be part of a musical com-
munity.

We believe that wonderful music exists in a wide diver-

sity of musical traditions, and encourage our students
to explore the music that speaks most directly to them.
We also believe that learning to play an instrument is a
process of discovery that has its own richness, and that
there is no such thing as being too old to begin.

Last year CMC welcomed 2,367 students ranging in age

from four to 90 years old. 68% of our students received
financial aid, qualifying for sliding scale discounts,
scholarships, free group classes, work study, or senior
discounts. There were 153 concerts at our Capp Street
recital hall, and scores of other concerts at other loca-
tions around the Bay Area. We also had tuition-free pro-
grams at a San Francisco and a Berkeley middle school,
as well as a homeless shelter in the Mission District.

As we begin our special anniversary year, we celebrate

our commitment to quality, diversity, and accessibility.
Come make music with us!

Whether you are an advanced beginner or
an accomplished amateur musician, CMC’s
chamber music program offers an oppor-
tunity to develop your musicianship and
technique as well as the chance to play with
others. Groups are composed of two to five
students of compatible levels. Advanced
beginners and intermediate students will
focus on developing basic ensemble skills,
intonation, tone quality, and rhythmic accu-
racy. Advanced students will study impor-
tant aspects of ensemble playing, including
interpretation and performance techniques.
Interested students should contact CMC
Program Director Chus Alonso at (510) 559-

Guitar Fretboard Workshop
Take your playing to the next level by mas-
tering the guitar fretboard. This workshop
guides students through a system that helps
them quickly find triads, the building blocks
of chords. Focusing on the top three strings,
this system will help students easily find al-
most any chord on the fretboard. Learning
the corresponding scales and their multiple
positions will help students play melodies
that fit within those chords.
