(b Santiago, March 13, 1934). Chilean composer, conductor and writer
on music. His musical training began in 1945, and from 1950 to 1954 he
studied at the conservatory of the University of Chile, to which he was
admitted on the recommendation of Domingo Santa Cruz. Since 1960
he has lived in Colombia, where he has worked as a composer,
conductor, critic and musicologist. He taught harmony, music history,
theory and conducting at the conservatory of the University of
Antioquia in Medellín (1963–73 and 1975–81). Since 1981 he has taught
at the music department of the Universidad del Valle (department
head, 1995–6); and from 1981 to 1985 he was director of the
Conservatorio de Bellas Artes in Cali. Since 1986 he has also taught at
the music department of the University of Cauca in Popayán.

His carefully constructed and richly orchestrated Opus quinientos

(1992) was commissioned by the Colombian Institute of Culture for the
quincentenary of Columbus's voyage to America, and it was recorded
