to do so.

2. Use the Optical Response sheet (ORS) provided separately for answering the questions.

DO NOT BREAK THE SEALS WITHOUT BEING INSTRUCTED TO DO SO BY THE INVIGILATOR

3. Blank spaces are provided within this booklet for rough work.

4. Write your name, form number and sign in the space provided on the back cover of this
booklet.

5. After breaking the seal of the booklet, verify that the booklet contains 32 pages and
that all the 18 questions in each subject and along with the options are legible. If not,
contact the invigilator for replacement of the booklet.

6. You are allowed to take away the Question Paper at the end of the examination.

OPTICAL RESPONSE SHEET :

The Fermi-Dirac distribution function, also called Fermi function, provides the probability
of occupancy of energy levels by Fermions. Fermions are half-integer spin particles, which
obey the Pauli exclusion principle. The Fermi-function is given by

f ( E) = ( E- EF ) ,
1+e kT

Where k is Boltmann constant, T is temperature in kelvin, f(E) is the probability that an

energy level at energy 'E' in thermal equilibrium with a large system is occupied by a Fermion
and EF is Fermi energy given by

a supernova explosion. The first results in the formation of white dwarf star where helium

Paragraph for Questions 17 and 18
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a widely used diagnostic technique. It shows internal
organs in minute detail. This technique is based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). Our
tissues mostly contain water and about two thirds of the atoms in human body are 'hydrogen'.
Nucleus of a hydrogen atom is a proton. Proton, like electron, has a spin angular momentum
and also a magnetic moment. Thus proton can be regarded as a tiny magnet. Its spin magnetic
eh
moment is nearly 2.79 µn, where m n = = 5.05 ´ 10 -27 J / T is called a nuclear magneton;
4 pmP
r
here mP is the mass of proton. Let us apply an external magnetic field B and discuss how
proton behaves. Obviously, proton will behave in a manner similar to a magnet placed in an
r
external magnetic field. We know that potential energy of a magnet of magnetic moment m
r
when placed in an external magnetic field B can be expressed as U = µB(1 – cosq), where q is
r r
the angle between m and B . Due to the interaction of external magnetic field and the spin
magnetic moment of proton, energy of the proton becomes quantised resulting in two allowed
state-(1) spin of the proton aligned with the magnetic field-(2) spin of the proton antialigned
i.e., opposite to field. These states will have different energy. In fact, the energy difference
between the two states is very small and photons whose energy matches the energy gap can
cause transitions of protons between the two energy states. These transitions are called
spin-flip transitions. A set-up for conducting such experiment is shown in figure. A coil is
wrapped around the sample and alternating current of variable frequency is made to pass in
the coil. Protons in the sample absorb power from the coil when frequency of current in the
coil is the same as required to induce transitions between the two energy states of
protons. This is called Resonance absorption of energy and the technique called
'Nuclear Magnetic Resonance'. With B = 1.5 T and, as mentioned above, spin magnetic moment
of proton = 2.79 µn, (µn = 5.05 × 10–27 J/T), answer the following questions.

17. Which state lies lower in energy?
(A) The state where proton spin component is parallel to external magnetic field.
(B) The state where proton spin component is antiparallel to external magnetic field.
(C) The state where proton spin component is perpendicular to external magnetic field.
(D) The state where proton spin component is inclined 60° to the external magnetic field.

18. As mentioned earlier, the widely used diagnostic technique 'Magnetic Resonance Imaging'
(MRI) employs NMR (spin-flip transitions). Compared to techniques that use X-rays and
g-rays which have energies in the range 104 – 106 eV,
(A) MRI causes a greater cellular damage since the photons associated with transitions used
in MRI are of greater energy and, in fact, much greater than 10 6 eV
(B) MRI causes equal cellular damage since the photons associated with transitions used in
MRI are of comparable energy
(C) MRI causes a greater cellular damage since the photons associated with transitions used
in MRI though these are comparable energy, but their flux is quite large
(D) MRI causes quite an insignificant cellular damage since the photons associated with
transitions used in MRI are of a much smaller energy which is generally of the order of
10 –7 eV
