❖ Type of Questions – MCQ

Primary Auxiliary and their uses


Primary Auxiliary are of three types :-
× Be ( is, am, are, was, were, be, been, being)
× Do ( does, do, did)
× Have ( has, have, had)

! Also called Anomalous verb

Verb+s – Singular Verb


Verb-s – Plural Verb

Subject – Noun/Pronoun

❖ Noun+s – Plural Noun.


❖ Noun-s – Singular Noun.

Pronoun – I,we,he,she,it,they,you.

If noun/pronoun is singular , Verb is singular.


If noun/Pronoun is plural , Verb is Plural

Rule 1

❖ Two subjects joined by “and” generally take a plural verb.

× Kohli and Pujara are the mainstay of the Indian team right now.
× Chennai and Kochi are the two most important cities of South
India.

Exception
❖ But if only one person, one idea and one thing is discussed then
we use a singular verb.
× Bread and Butter is his only food.
× Slow and steady wins the race.
× My friend ,philosopher and guide has come.

Rule 2

There are certain nouns which exists in same form whether


singular or plural . In these nouns the additional information
determines whether singular or plural verb is to be used.

× Sheep , deer , fish etc.


× Many sheeps are/is grazing in the field.
× The deer/deers park at Sarnath is his favourite place to visit.

Rule 3

❖ If “No” precedes each subject or an individual subject we use


singular verb.
× No man and no woman was/were doing the work.
× No man and woman was/were doing the work.

❖ Noun of Noun Concept.

❖ It states that in case the orientation of the sentence is NOUN(1)


of NOUN(2).The Verb agrees with the first noun.

• The newer generation of players is more focused on their strike


rate than their average.
• The whole block of flats were destroyed by fire.

Rule 5

❖ If two subjects are joined by Conjunction like as well as, with ,


along with, together with , In addition to, besides, like ,
unlike , with , accompanied by, led by when used then the verb
agrees with the the noun or pronoun given in the first case in the
sentence.

She together with her friends is visiting her uncle.


The Captain along with the sailors was drowned..

Rule 6

× If two noun joined by correlative conjunctions like neither..nor,


either…or, not only….but also, none..but then use the verb
according to the nearest subject.

× Example:

× Neither Ram nor his friends have arrived.


× It was not only she but also his brothers who have done that.
× Not she but her friends are responsible.

❖ Each of/Either of/ One of/ Neither of/None of is always followed by a


plural noun and singular verb.

❖ Examples

1. Either of his two brothers is dumb.


2. One of my friend always stays in hotel.
3. Each of these boys was given the prize.
4. Neither of the two brothers has helped him.

Rule 9

❖ Usage in distribution.

× Each of/Either of/Neither of/Everyone of/One of Everybody/


somebody /anybody/ no one/Everyone/anyone/Everything/
something/anything/Nothing then the noun or pronoun is always plural
but the verb remains singular.

× Each of the men is intelligent.


× One of them has been appointed as the chairman of the company.

❖ A number of/ A large number of/ A number of /Large number of always


take a plural verb.
× A number of books are available in the library.
× A number of reasons were responsible for his failures.

❖ The number means a definite number and they act as collective noun
hence we use singular verb.
× The number of accidents has increased due to negligence of people.
× The number of books available in the library is less.

× If Relative Pronoun –Who,that,which,whose,whom is used then in


these types of sentences verb is according to the antecedent of the
pronoun.

× It is I who am to blame.
× PV Sindhu is one of the best players that India has ever produced.
