Assignment 1 Brief
Scenario
You work for a manufacturing company in the design studio as a junior designer. You have
been asked to produce a set of sketches from engineering components that have been
provided by a client. The sketches are to be used to collect information that can be used at a
later date as reference guides to discuss potential manufacturing options for the components
with your manager, so they must be clear. Your sketches need to be produced freehand and
use a range of drawing styles. This is to show you have an understanding of how to
communicate information quickly through sketches, whilst still following basic rules of a range
of different drawing styles.
You also need to produce a report for your manager, looking at a range of drawing styles that
you used for sketching the engineering components, commenting on the benefits and
limitations of each style.

Task 1:

You will be given specific engineering components that you will need to produce sketches
from. The sketches are to be completed FREEHAND and on the provided (grid) paper. You will
need to produce sketches of each of the component/s in a range of styles from 3rd ANGLE
ORTHOGRAPHIC, ISOMETRIC, OBLIQUE CAVALIER and/or OBLIQUE CABINET.

Some basic dimensions must be included in the final sketches showing overall sizes of the
component/s and the sketches themselves must be of a good standard and follow the ‘rules’
of the styles they are sketched in – this implies that somebody could identify the drawn
component from a selection of similar components.

If used, you must ensure the correct use of linetypes etc. to indicate features of the
components.

Orthographic – Part 1
Isometric – Part 1
Oblique – Part 2

Work to be handed in
 A set of Freehand Sketches (3) of engineering components (above) in 3rd Angle
Orthographic, Isometric, Oblique Cavalier and/or Oblique Cabinet styles. All
sketches must have your name clear written on them and are to be scanned as a
PDF file and uploaded to the Assignment 1 Canvas Area.

Task 2:

Relating to all the different drawing styles you have investigated in the Engineering Drawing
for Technicians unit - Orthographic (both 1st and 3rd angle), Isometric, Oblique Cavalier &

Oblique Cabinet - you need to produce a table which describes the
benefits and limitations of each style when representing any given engineering component
compared to the other styles. You can then assess the suitability of the entire range of
techniques.

You can refer to how each style works, but the focus of the comparison table is the benefits
(advantages) and limitations (disadvantages) of each style when representing any given
engineering component.

Pictures can be used to support your work – however pictures must be referenced and ensure
a bibliography is included.

Work to be handed in
 A Comparison Table looking at the Benefits and Limitations of Different Drawing
Styles

Tasks 1 and 2 provides evidence for P1, P2 & M1

The Harvard Reference system must be used
