Case Study Behavior Plan

Child Guidance plan for: ____Morgan B._______ (first name, last initial)

Child gender: Male------· Child Age: 3 and 4 months

Observation: I observed the following about the physical environment curriculum,


schedule, current teaching strategies, current interactions with the child or children.
I observed that the classroom environment is overall a very positive atmosphere in which
students are able to learn in a safe environment. The room is set up in a manner conducive to the
learning process, with child sized furniture, colorful walls, bright lighting, and is organized. The
room, however, has open play centers that cannot be put away. I observed that the classroom
schedule is very structured and there are many transitions throughout the day. I observed read
aloud instruction with whole group and little to no small group instruction. Morgan does not
listen to the instruction of the teachers often. He often plays in the block center during
carpet/instruction time. Morgan does not like to sit still for long periods of time, is very vocal,
extremely smart, and loves sensory activities. However, he does not listen to instruction, is not
easily redirected by teachers, and is often ignored by the teachers. This student performs well on
observational assessments and excels over his four-year-old counterparts, even though he plays
during instruction time.
Observation: I answered the five "w" questions about the child's behavior. These answers
seem to show that the child's behavior serves the following purpose(s):
Who: The child who is disruption in class is Morgan.
What: Morgan disrupts instruction by playing in centers, loudly, while the teachers are teaching.
When: This challenging behavior occurs during whole group lesson time.
Where: These behaviors are exhibited on the carpet, during circle time, beside the centers.
Why: Morgan behaves in this manner because he does not like whole group instruction and
needs a more direct approach. He does not like to sit still with his other classmates for a long
period of time. He is the baby of the family with four older siblings, therefore, I believe he does
not get a lot of individualized attention at home and is seeking that attention at school. Whole
group may be a trigger for him because the attention during instruction is focused on all of the
students at once.
What I need to do: Based on observations, the most significant things that I can do to
support this child are:
As an educator, I could print him off a classroom schedule so he can see when things are going
to happen through out the day so he can be better prepared for transitions. I can engage in small
group instruction or individualized instruction with him. I can also close off the centers using
sheets of fabric to hang over the front of the shelves or facing the centers in other directions,
during whole group instruction time.

Continuing to support the child: What do I need to do to continue to support the child after
she or he l earns a different way of behaving?
After the behavior has changed, I can still ask him questions during whole group instruction to
help him pay attention or ask him to be the classroom helper during whole group. I can also still
provide individualized support when needed.
