Title: We are All in This Together

Rational for the Grant/ About My Classroom: Hey, my name is Ms.Kenley! I am a second-grade
teacher at Pleasant Hill Elementary school. I teach at a title I school, over half of students
qualify for free and reduced lunch. I teach twenty wonderful eight to nine-year olds, who all
come from very different backgrounds. Many different ethnicities, cultures, and values are
represented in our community, as well as in our classroom. I am a first-year teacher and am
trying to build my classroom library. I have only received one classroom supply check, for the
entire year, as a first-year teacher I did not have many supplies coming in. Upon working with
second graders, I had accumulated many preschool level texts. However, the texts that I have
do not address student needs, interests, and Lexile level. I believe that a culturally relevant text
set would greatly enhance learning for my students and cultural competency.

My Project: I have students of all different backgrounds in my class. It is important to me that

they learn about other types of cultures and understand how to empathize with others. By
having culturally relevant texts in the classroom, I will allow students to have a book, with
characters that look like them. It is vital that we celebrate differences and the uniqueness of
each student. I have entitled this project “We are All in This Together” because my students and
I make up a classroom family. Within our classroom family, we value each other and our
cultures. We are truly all in this together in learning about our peers’ differences and how those
differences bring beauty. It is my goal to use this set of culturally relevant texts to reach my
students and give them texts with characters that look like them. It is my goal to teach students
about other cultures and to teach them to step another individual’s shoes. I will use the texts in
whole group read aloud time and for student independent reading. I believe my students will
benefit from these texts greatly. Many of them love to read picture books and it has been a
struggle for me to slowly purchase texts that are on their reading level. My students will not
only be able to enhance their literary skills but will also learn the value of cultural relevance. I
would be able to keep this set of texts for years to come, to use with all the students I may come
across. I will know that this project has been effective when we begin discussing where we come
from and how each individual brings something wonderful to the table. During Social Studies,
we are learning about different regions of South Carolina, in preparation for third grade. While
we have been studying the different regions of the state, many questions have arose. These
questions have been mostly about the different cultures we have learned about and how they
shape who they are as individuals today. For example, Yamasee native Americans, African
Americans, Spanish conquistadors, etc. By having a set of texts, to refer to, I can better assist
students in their understanding of different cultures.
