ARP TOPIC PROPOSAL

Topic Number 1
Proposed Topic

Making Paper out of Carabao grass

Objectives of the Study

NOTE: The objectives of the study must be S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-specific).

This study aims to:

1. To determine if the cooking time has a significant effect on the strength of the grass paper.

2. Describe the properties of the grass paper and compare it with that of other types of paper.

3. Suggest if the paper created from grass (grass paper) could be used as an alternative to
retailed papers in terms of efficiency, availability, and cost.

Hypothesis

There is a significant relationship between the cooking time and the strength of the paper made
from grass given the condition that there is no change in the temperature of heat applied.
Steps in Formulating, Experimenting or Constructing (Methodology)

NOTE: The method must test your hypothesis and follow the objectives of your study. It must be stated clearly, and as
comprehensive as possible. Make sure that the steps are thoroughly discussed.

A. List of Materials and Equipment

(Two separate tables, one for materials and another for equipment)

Material Quantity
Carabao grass
(Sodium Hyroxide) 100 g
Water 1L
Bleach 50 ml

Equipment Quantity
Blender 1
Large pot 1
Strainer 1
Mixing spoon 1
Stove 1
Large bowl 1
Measuring cups (50ml, 100ml) 1 each
Glass frame 1
Calibration weights or rocks
Paper clamps 4

B. Pre-Experiment
(Enumerate the preparatory steps that you will perform to ensure smooth, correct, efficient and effective
implementation of your experiment or development of your project. The preparation of the experimental
set up is included here. You may include a rough sketch of the experimental set up to explain it better.)
1. Gather the Carabao grass without including its roots, then rinse in order to get rid of dirt and dust.
2. Prepare the ingredients - the caustic soda (Sodium Hydroxide), water, and bleach.
3. Ready the materials such as the blender, measuring cups, strainer, bowl, mixing spoon, and the pot
as well as the weights to test the strength of the paper and paper clamps to hold the paper as the
experiment is being conducted.
4. Wear laboratory safety clothes and equipment such as gloves, coat, and goggles before
conducting the experiment.

C. Experiment Proper
(Enumerate the procedure that must be done that will lead to the direct achievement of your objectives
or goals. The number of trials must be mentioned here.)

1. To transform the grass into paper, the first step is to boil the grass for __ minutes. Remove the
water then blend the contents in order to easily mold the paper and achieve a finer texture. Put the
contents into a strainer then rinse. Transfer to a bowl, add 100ml of Sodium Hydroxide mixed with
300ml water and let it set for about __ minutes. Rinse the raw paper thoroughly then transfer to a pot
with 1L of water and 50ml of bleach. Let it cook for __ minutes. Form the paper by molding it between
the glass case/frame.
2. Conduct four trials with varying cooking duration with an interval of five minutes (the least being 5
and the most being 20 minutes).
3. To test the strength of each of the grass papers, clamp the four edges to keep it stationary. We will
use calibration weights for accurate measurements and position them on the middle of the paper to test
its resistance against applied force.
4. Determine the properties of grass paper and that of other types of paper
5. Record observations.

D. Post-Experiment
(Enumerate what will happen after the actual experiment. The statistical analysis that will be used must
be mentioned here. You must briefly explain why this statistical analysis is appropriate.)
1. Since the research aims to identify the strength of the paper by the time it has been cooked, it is
recommended to use correlation.
2. Determine the variables by using the cooking time as the independent variable and the strength of
the paper as the independent variable.
3. Calculate the correlation
4. Derive conclusions from the experiment and to decide whether to reject or not reject the null
hypothesis.
5. Give recommendations
