Question 1 (15 marks)

(a) The equation of a sphere, S1 is given by 8x + 4y − 14z + x2 + y 2 + z 2 = −33.

(i) By completing the square, show that the center of S1 is (−4, −2, 7) and

find the diameter of S1 .

(ii) Suppose there is a second sphere, S2 , with half the radius of S1 . It is

known that the midpoint of the straight line connecting the centers of S1

and S2 is 1, 21 , 2 . Find the equation of S2 .

(b) Sketch the graph of the function f (x, y) = 45 y − 43 x + 4 in the 4th octant.

(Hint: the 4th octant is octant in which (x, y, z) = (+, −, +))

(c) Evaluate the limits, if it exists, or show that the limit does not exist.

Question 2 (15 marks)

(a) Alice and Bob have calculated the partial derivatives of a given function,

f (x, y). Alice reported fx (x, y) = 8x2 + 5y and Bob reported

fy (x, y) = 3x + 7y. Suppose Alice did the calculation correctly. Discuss

mathematically using Clairaut’s Theorem whether Bob calculated the partial

derivative wrongly.

(b) Suppose z is defined implicitly as a function of two variables, x and y, by the

(d) In a manufacturing process, the tin cans with radius of 6cm and height of

11cm are subject to an error of 1% in each dimension. Use differentials to

estimate the error in calculating the volume (in cm3 rounded to 2 decimal

places).
