Creative Project 2: Illustrator

UFOfest
What I made:

Client: McMenamins Hotel Oregon

Audience: General Population – specifically those who live in McMinnville or may be interested in the
UFO festival.

Intended Impact: Create interest in the 2020 UFO festival in McMinnville, OR and a possible collectible.

Design decisions you made to achieve this impact: The color

File Properties

• The color space used is CYMK as it is the type of color mode used when printing. As this is primarily
intended as a printed poster for both advertisement and for souvenirs of festival participants. This
decision was made because according to the Illustrator textbook (pg. 191) CMYK is best suited for
print applications.
• What is the resolution of your document and why? The document is set to print at 300 dpi but
because it is primarily created as vector there is no true resolution setting for the poster. As such it
can be changed to any size requested.
• The poster is set to print at 11 X 17 (tabloid) as requested by the client.

Techniques Used

1) Technique #1 – pen tool

a) I illustrated the alien head using the pencil tool (with an exception for using some circles to help
create a fluid top of head and a starting point for the eyes). I did this because the shape of a
head is odd, and I wanted to create a personality to my alien. After establishing a basic shape, I
went back in using the pen tool to help shape the face and eyes using the anchor points and the
directional handles. I did this for the antennae as well.
b) For the cow I again used the pencil tool to trace the cow and then made adjustments to create
the look that I wanted.
2) Technique #2 – shape tools
a) I used the ellipse tool to help create the shape for the UFO. I used the knife and shaper tool to
come up with the final product.
b) For the background I used a rectangle shape to fill with black, mimicking a night sky.
c) I used the line tool to create triangles for the beam shapes (I copied and pasted for the beam
layers). I then colored them the pink beam color and a metallic color I found under “Metal” in
the color library, this I decreased in opacity so that it muted the intense pink of the underlay.
d) I also used the ellipse tool for the nostrils on the alien’s face.
e) Using the line tool, I also created a pinstriping in the background. I did this by using the blend
tool, spacing the blend at 2pt for the specified distance.
3) Technique #3 – transformations
a) Size – I adjusted the different parts of the poster for size – for example the cow was a very
different size when originally traced.
b) Angle – I adjusted the angles of several parts as well – for example the “O” of UFOfest was
rotated and then adjusted from its original placement.
c) I transformed the colors and the outlines to help keep to the color scheme.
4) Technique #4 – gradients
a) I wanted to create a rounded looking eye to the alien head. I used the gradient tool to help
create this look.
b) I also used the gradient tool to help add dimension to the UFO.
5) Technique #5 – typography
a) I used several types of fonts to create my finished product. For this I had to look under the “Find
More” tab to be able to find a font close to what I wanted (Blambot Casual Bold). After
establishing this font choice, along with a more readable Myriad Pro, I created outlines on the
“UFOfest” type so that I could adjust the font even more to look the way I wanted it. I did this
using the anchor points and directional handles.
b) I also added outlines to the fonts and changed the colors to the color scheme in order for them
to stand out more.
