Statement of Intent

The intent of this course is to develop, as rapidly as possible, the ability of students to raise their sightreading
rating. Four books are used simultaneously and sequentially each week according to the “key of the week”:

William G. Leavitt, Reading Studies

William G. Leavitt, Advanced Reading Studies

These two books are position-oriented and used in this course to familiarize the student with reading in the five
easiest positions for the key of the week. The assignment consists of any studies in the key of the week from
chapters written in those five positions.

Joe Viola, Technique of the Saxophone

This book is a recognized book for development of saxophone technique and uses a melodic approach based on
chords. It is used in this course to challenge the student with interesting intervallic melodies containing many
leaps and arpeggios, thus developing note recognition at a fairly rapid rate. Chord studies with diatonic
relationship to the key of the week are assigned.

Lennie Niehaus, Jazz Conception for Saxophone (Intermediate)

A very melodic and musical presentation of jazz-style melodies with progressive difficulty. Studies in the key of
the week are assigned.

Each week (or two), the key of the week changes; the procedure is the same for each key presented.
