Experiment # 6
The confined candle
(Gas Law)
Objectives:
This activity, you should be able to:
 Identify the four variables of the gas laws;
 Relate the effect that each variable has with each other; and
 Rationalize how the experiment proceeds using the knowledge learned from the gas laws.
Materials:
 Candle (in a metal cup)  Match/lighter
 Small basin  Water
 2 Glass (fits over the candle)  Food color

Procedures:
1. Light the candle and let some wax drip at the bottom of the basin
2. Make sure the candle wax does not completely solidify.
3. Fix the candle firmly on the bottom of the glass using the melted wax as an anchor.
4. Put water into the glass until the candle is submerged half-way. Add a few drops of food
color.
5. Be careful not to wet the wick of the candle.
6. Light the candle
7. Place a glass jar with food color over the candle, make it sure that the mouth of the jar is
submerged into the water.
8. Write down your observations.
Observations:

Guide Questions:
1. What happens when the glass jar is placed over the flame?
2. Other than consuming the oxygen within the glass jar, what other processes do you think
happens inside the glass jar when the flame dies out?
3. What evidence shows that there is a change in pressure inside the glass jar?
4. What happens as the glass jar cools to room temperature?
