Quick facts:
Use one-inch margins around the paper. Double-space the entire document.
Place the title of the page (Works Cited) in the center of the page, an inch from
the top.
Create a double space between the title (Works Cited) and the first citation.
Each citation should start on the left margin (one inch from the side of the
paper).
For longer citations, indent the second and any subsequent lines one half inch from
the beginning of the citation. This is called a hanging citation.
Example of a hanging citation:
2014. Print.
Format of Citations:
Place citations in alphabetical order by the authors last name. If there are two
works by the same author, alphabetize by the last name of the second author (if
there is one). If there is only the single author, alphabetize by the title of the
work.
Two or More Works by the Same Author
If there are two works by the same author, it is not necessary to type out their
full name for each citation. Instead, type out the full name in the first citation
only. For all subsequent citations, in place of the name, type three hyphens with a
period at the end.
Example:
If the author is listed along with another author, type out the full name of each
author, do not use the hyphens and periods.
Example:
When there are two or more works by multiple authors, use hyphens and periods.
Example:
Rosenthal, Amy Krouse, and Tom Lichtenheld. Duck! Rabbit! San
. Exclamation Mark.
A blank template will open with the Reference Type set to Journal. Change the
Reference Type to Web Page.
The information you need for a web reference may vary depending on the referencing
style you are using. For Vancouver it is:
Author (this will usually be an organization of some sort, e.g. BMA, WHO, Asthma
UK, etc, etc.).
Title of the web page.
Date of the web page (if available).
Date you accessed the web page.
URL (i.e. Web address).
Note:- When entering the name of an organization on Endnote, add a comma to the end
of the name (so British Medical Association, or Asthma UK,). This prevents Endnote
from treating it as a personal name. For example, with World Health Organization if
you miss the comma off the end, Endnote will interpret this as a personal name:
World, H.O.
It is sometimes necessary to quote or make reference to a work that you have not
actually read but only encountered in the work of another. Even though you have not
read the quoted source you must acknowledge the original source of the information,
as well as the work in which it appears, in a parenthetical note.
The name, date and page reference of the work in which information originated
should appear first, followed by 'cited' and then the name etc. of the work in
which the information was found. Only the work you have read should appear in the
reference list at the end of the work.
Examples
Neville (1990 cited Wilson 1998, p.89) devised the standard criteria for food
tasting surveys.
Although the results of the Bristol Sausage Survey have been described by one
scholar as 'seriously misleading' (Brown 1990, p.65 cited Jones 2004, p.87), they
have had a great influence on the marketing strategy of industry leaders.
When making reference to the spoken words of someone other than the author recorded
in a text, cite the name of the person and the name of the author, date and page
reference of the work in which the quote or reference appears.
Examples
In a recent interview (Jones 2004, p.77), Henry Howard said that the British
Sausage industry has suffered from decades of under investment in research and
development.
As Henry Howard said in an interview with Jones (2004, p70), 'British sausages are
widely regarded as the best in the world'.
