INTRODUCTION
•Modular coordination is a concept of coordination of dimension and space, in which buildings
and components are dimensioned and positioned in a term of a basic unit or module, known as
‘1M’ which is equivalent to 100 mm.

•The introduction of modular coordination in building will constitute a positive step to streamline
the industry towards proper metrication in building planning, design, construction, assembly and
manufacturing of building materials and components.

• It coordination allows a more flexible open industrial system to take shape.

•The principal objective of implementing Modular Coordination is to improve productivity in the

building industry through industrialization.

DISCRIPTION
• It is construction industry which plays a major role in country's economy.

• There is a growing demand for the construction industry to provide better value by improved
quality and performance. Modular construction uses pre-engineered volumetric units that are
installed on site as fitted-out and serviced „building blocks‟.

• The use of modular construction is directly influenced by the client's requirements for speed of
construction, quality, added benefits of economy of scale, as well as single point procurement.

• less material wastage on site and very less construction time.

HISTORY
ORIGIN

• Modular coordination was first explored as an aid to design shortly after the introduction
of prefabrication in the construction industry in the industrialization.
• It was conceived as a further step in the development of systematic design and
construction of the building. This subject has been discussed and attempted in an actual
building experiment in practically every developed country.
• Modular coordination was first studied in Singapore in the early seventies. The housing
and development board implemented the concept in 1973 in the new generation flats.
• Prefabrication and standard components were subsequently introduced. Modular blocks
and bricks were introduced in 1983. There are merits to extend the use of modular
coordination in other components as well.

ADVANTAGE OF MODULAR COORDINATION

COMPARISON BETWEEN MODULAR AND
CONVECTIONAL CONSTRUCTION

REASONS TO CHOOSE MODULAR COORINATION

BASICS OF MODULE
• The basic module is known as 1M which is equivalent to 100mm. 1M = 100mm There are three
type of MODULE :-

(I) BASIC MODULE

(II) MULTI MODULE

(III) SUB MODULE

BASIC MODULE
• It is the fundamental unit of size in modular coordination and for general application to building
& components .

The size of basic Module is taken as 100mm denoted by “M” It is considered to be large enough
to effect some variety reduction in range of component size and is small enough to provide a
flexible unit of measurement for the purpose of design.

MULTI MODULE
• Certain whole multiples of basic module usually expressed in as “M” with numeric prefix as
2M , 3M, 4M etc are referred to as multi module.

SUB MODULE
Certain submultiples of basic module which are whole simple fractions shall be chosen when
absolutely necessary for an increment smaller than the basic module.

For practical considerations, this sub modular increment shall be expressed as “M” with
fractional prefix as 1/5M, 1/4M, 1/3M,etc.

CONTROLLING REFERENCE SYSTEM

Reference planes can be identified which locate the

main vertical and horizontal elements of construction,
e.g. floor, walls, and columns.

• HORIZONTAL CONTROLLING DIMENSIONS

Traditionally, modular theory has distinguished
between boundary planning and axial planning.
In practice, however, such a clear-cut
distinction may not exist

• VERTICAL CONTROLLING DIMENSIONS

In the vertical section that modular floor plane is the
reference plane from which modular dimensions
are taken.
CASE STUDY
ABOUT
B2 ATLANTIC YARD, is the first of all new
residential tower built to cradle the Barclays center
arena ,it is the part of a $ 49 billion ,22 acre Atlantic
yard project in Brooklyn .the 3 new residential
building will contain a total of approx 1500 unit of
residential building to break ground, and at 32 stories
and 363 unit ,will be one of the tallest modular
building in the world.approx 4000 of retail on the
ground floor ,and 20000 sf of arena stogie in the cellar
and base of b2.

CONCLUSION
• The modular coordination has various advantages over the conventional construction.

• It has ease of coordination, which offers ability to supply single source installation through
factory trained distributor network.

• Modular construction is consistently high in quality both in design and construction. Modular
coordination provides maximum flexibility to meet the design.
