Lesson Idea Name: Moon Phases

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): Fourth
Content Standard Addressed:
ESS1.B: Earth and the Solar System: The orbits of Earth around the sun and of the moon around Earth,
together with the rotation of Earth about an axis between its North and South poles, cause observable
patterns. These include day and night; daily and seasonal changes in the length and direction of shadows;
phases of the moon; and different positions of the sun, moon, and stars at different times of the day, month,
and year.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Given that this is a video platform it allows for students to have support in multiple different ways. When
students are watching the video, they can turn on the closed captioning’s if it allows them to learn more by
reading or if they have hearing problems. This supports students who are visual learners in every aspect given
that it is a video. This also can be translated into a different language for support for students who speak
another language. This is a video file so it can upload to the class blog where students have access to the
video whenever they need which is really beneficial for students who need to see it again or for students who
might have been absent.

Lesson idea implementation:

We will be working on this standard for two weeks. This will be the first day that the students will be
introduced everything about in the Solar System. This will be the introduction and hook to everything we will
be learning. I will have the students sitting in the carpet in the front of the room. Before I show the video, I
will ask the students if they see the moon at night, I will ask them if they see it change during the month and
what they think it looks like when it is changing. This will be the introduction discussion right before they are
showed the video. When they are watching they will have a graphic organizer they can complete as well to
have as a reference for the different phases of the moon. After this I will have students do a think-pair-share
about their comments and thoughts about the video and learning that the moon has different phases.

Then as partners I will ask the students to research why the moon has different phases (the sun hitting it in
different directions and being hidden from the earth as well). I will ask them to come up with a movie on their
own demonstrating what they have researched, I will require the students to include audio, video, music, and

transitions to become familiar with using the resource, given they will probably use it for future assignments.

Importance of technology:
Allowing the students to use technology allows for creativity. It also enhances authentic learning and it is
something the students will remember and reference as opposed to completing a worksheet. This assignment
also allows students to pair up with a peer which gives students the opportunity to collaborate and learn from
each other which can be very beneficial. Students will be using different websites to find the information as
well as pictures and diagrams.

Inspiration (optional): n/a

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
Students will be given websites that have been reviewed before they go on them. The students will have
restrictions on the computers or devices to where they are unable to reach inappropriate websites. It will be
important for the students to cite where they have received the information and giving them practice at an
early age is important because they will use it the rest of their education journey. They will be given papers
that have direct instructions and examples on how to cite resources they are using.

Reflective Practice:
This lesson was designed to introduce a whole unit. This allows for students to get engaged and partner up with a peer
to become familiar with iMovie’s software. After this to extend the lesson I will be introducing planets the next day and
students will be guided to pick their favorite planet and pair up with other classmates that have picked the same planet
and make a movie presentation for the class. When each group is presenting about the planet the other students will be
taking notes on the planets they did not choose. This gives students the opportunity for authentic learning as well as
learning from their peers and becoming familiar with a useful resource.
