Date: _____th april. 2020 Students: _________________, _________________, codes: ________, ________

Figure 0. TGA assays for a silicone

without fillers (sample 1) and
silicone with filler (microsized
alumina). Heating from 40 °C to
750 °C under nitrogen, then from
750 °C to 900 °C under air. Paths at
bottom are the derivatives from
the upper paths.

ACTIVITY 1: TGA

A. Please explain briefly, the

effect of blending alumina with
the material matrix.
B. Which the maximum
working temperature have the
material without permanent
damage?

ACTIVITY 2: DSC

A. This material was

annealed (PEEK/PTFE
blend), so, some thermal
phenomena’s were moved
or revealed from its raw
state. Please identify
them.
B. Use a mathematical
method to find and
indicate the average
temperature for the
thermal transitions inside
the material.
C.

Figure 2. DSC (DTA) for
borosilicate glasses (Source:
Nirajan Ojha (2016), Master of
Science thesis, Tampere
University of Technology,
Finland.) “B” represents the
content of Boron Oxide in the
glass formulation. Heating
rates 10°C/min for glass
particle sizes <50 μm (fine
powders) (Glasses with the
oxide composition in mol%
53.85SiO2-xB2O3-22.66Na2O-
1.72P2O5-21.77CaO with x
varied as (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10)
and maintaining other oxide
composition according to
mole variation in B2O3 were
labelled S53P4, 0.5B, 1B, 2B,
5B, 10B respectively)

ACTIVITY 3: GLASSES

A. Select any weft, then highlight it. After, identify the thermal transitions (glass transition, recrystallization
range/temperature, melting range/point, decomposition (if any!).
B. This material is a glass, the others too. They could crystallize after annealing. Please identify the glass that is more
prone to gain shock resistance. Explain your opinion using vocabulary from the materials classes.

Activity 4: NANOCOMPOSITES (PVA + Single wall carbon nanotubes)

(Source: https://www.sems.qmul.ac.uk/research/honours/doc.php?id=256)

A. Select pure PVA and any other blend with carbon nanotubes and Redraw/rebuild the plots (into a single graph) for
the DSC assays, according to the data collected in results table, for each composite. (Tg is the glass transition, Tm1, Tm2
are the “calculated” melting points, H is the enthalpy of fusion or amount of heat absorbed during the fusion, Xc is
the percentage of crystallinity and Tc is the “measured” re-crystallization temperature.
B. Explain briefly the working conditions for this material in coherence whit the existence of thermal transitions.
