(INT.) – KYLIE’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

A girl’s bedroom. It is clear from the design that the room belongs to a
teenager. Clothes have been tossed aside onto a chair and pictures have
been stuck to the walls. A mixture of memories and inspirational quotes.

In the middle of the bed sits the rooms owner, KYLIE. She is
comfortable, writing in a notebook. A laptop plays a film from the end
of the bed. Dirty Dancing.

The camera pushes in towards Kylie, focusing more on her arrangement.

She looks up every now and then, her attention moving between the laptop
and her notebook.

KYLIE (V.O)
I’ve seen every romance movie ever made.
I know this one word for word. I’m a professional at this point.

The camera pans across the bed, stopping once behind Kylie to look over
her shoulder, showing the film playing.

KYLIE (CONT’D)
I’ve been watching them for years, so that I can be ready.
That way when I do fall in love, nothing can go wrong.

Kylie pauses to watch the film for a second, deep in thought before
going back to her notebook.

KYLIE (CONT’D)
Not that I have to wait much longer.
I’ve got Joe now.

(EXT.) – A STREET – MIDDAY

The camera is behind Kylie as she walks down the street. Her hair is
loose down her back.

A boy, JOE, approaches from the opposite direction. He looks relaxed, a

casual bounce in his stride.

KYLIE (CONT’D)
The way we met was quite romantic actually.
Like in the films.

The pair continue to approach each other. Joe is looking downwards at

the floor; no attention paid to Kylie.
They meet in the middle of the path, Joe looks up. He’s surprised, not
expecting the encounter.
The camera follows from behind Joe this time.

KYLIE (CONT’D)
We met just outside on the path.
Joe was going one way and I the other.
We did that little dance you do,

The shot changes to show the pair from the side. They try to sidestep
one another, both going the same way. They try again with the same
result, watching each other awkwardly.

KYLIE (CONT’D)
Where you both go take a left and then a right.
It was quite funny actually.

Joe laughs awkwardly and then successfully makes his way around Kylie.
She glances over her shoulder at him.

KYLIE (CONT’D, LONGINGLY)

Joe found it funny, he laughed.
He has the best laugh.

(INT.) – KYLIE’S BEDROOM – EVENING

Kylie’s bedroom again. She has company this time, her friend ELLA.
A wide shot is used to show them sat on Kylie’s bed looking at their
phones. The atmosphere is casual, as though they do this often.

ELLA (calmly)
So he goes to our school?

KYLIE
That’s what his bio says, and he’s friends
with that weird guy from class.

ELLA
Is he not a little weird then? I mean if he hangs
out with that lot..

KYLIE (PROMPTLY)
No. No, Joe isn’t like them. He’s chill.

Ella leans over to look at Kylie’s phone. She’s scrolling through

Instagram, looking at one of Joe’s pictures.

ELLA
How do you know? You don’t even know this guy.

KYLIE
I know him. I know he plays football, and he lives nearby.

ELLA
Still, you don’t talk to him.

KYLIE
No but we see each other around and I think he’s going to that meeting
at school.
Maybe I can talk to him then.

Kylie shrugs, dropping her phone onto the bed. Ella looks up, her
confusion still clear on her face.

ELLA
Just be careful okay?

KYLIE (DISMISSIVE)
Fine…

KYLIE (V.O)
I did see him at the meeting. Briefly.
He saw me, I smiled back.

(EXT.) – THE STREET – MID AFTERNOON

Joe and Kylie pass each other on the street again. She smiles at him.
Joe nods back, walking past. The interaction is brief.

(EXT.) – THE STREET – EARLY MORNING

6
Knowing You – FINAL SCRIPT 14.04.20

Kylie is taking the rubbish out when Joe passes by again. He is out for
a run. She smiles at him. Joe smiles back awkwardly as he jogs past,
raising a hand in greeting.

(EXT.) – THE STREET - MORNING

Kylie leaves her house again, passing Joe like before. They are both on
their commute to school, though in opposite directions.
Kylie speaks up, with little hesitation.

KYLIE
Hey

JOE
Hi

Kylie opens her mouth to speak again but Joe is already gone. Clearly in
a rush.

(EXT.) – THE STREET – THE NEXT MORNING

Kylie leaves her house, joining the path as Joe passes by, like every
morning. They stop suddenly, almost colliding. Joe laughs, trying to
pass her again, he seems to be in a good mood. They both go the same
way, laughing again. On the third try they make it past.
Joe winks at Kylie as he walks by.

(EXT.) – THE PARK – DAYTIME

Kylie is walking in the park. She looks over at a group of boys, they’re
playing football. The ball rolls away, Joe chases after it. Kylie
watches as he retrieves the ball, laughing with his friends.

She watches the group for a moment longer before moving to sit on a
nearby bench.

(EXT.) – THE PARK BENCH – EVENING

7
Knowing You – FINAL SCRIPT 14.04.20

A match shot to Kylie sitting on the same bench, in the same spot. Ella
sits beside her on the back of the bench, her feet on the seat. She is
drinking from a can and looking straight ahead.

ELLA
So he actually spoke to you? Like in person?

KYLIE
Yeah… He has a few times now. We see each other before school.

ELLA
What do you talk about exactly?

Kylie shrugs, glancing at Ella over her shoulder. Ella just takes
another sip of her drink. It’s warm out, the sun slowly setting around
them.

KYLIE
Not a lot… We don’t really have time

ELLA
Right…

A low angle as Kylie looks back at Ella again. She watches her face,
trying to read her neutral expression with little success.

KYLIE
What?

ELLA
Nothing… I just…
8
Knowing You – FINAL SCRIPT 14.04.20

Ella hesitates, turning her body so that she is now facing Kylie. She
looks troubled this time, considering her words carefully.

ELLA (CONT’D)
I just think it’s a little weird, that you hardly know this guy and
suddenly you’re best friends. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, but maybe
you should be careful, yeah?

KYLIE
I don’t see the problem… but if it makes you feel better I’ll watch out,
okay?

ELLA
Thank you

Ella turns forward again, drinking more of her drink. She relaxes,
looking straight ahead. Kylie shuffles a little closer, holding out her
phone for Ella to see.

KYLIE
He is kinda cute though.

ELLA (TEASING)
Whatever makes you happy

Ella doesn’t look at the phone. On the small screen is a picture of Joe,
clearly taken by Kylie while he was playing football.

ELLA (CONT’D)
Why don’t you DM him? It’s worth a shot, I mean he clearly knows who you
are.

Kylie listens, still looking at her phone. The picture of Joe is still
on her screen.

KYLIE
I dunno… What if he thinks it’s weird? Or he doesn’t want to talk?

ELLA
You won’t know until you try, c’mon what is there to lose? Just DM him.

KYLIE
And say what? Hi?

ELLA
Yes! Hi. Hello. Anything.

Ella puts her can down, watching Kylie expectantly. She leans closer,
encouraging.

ELLA (CONT’D)
Go on…

Kylie looks at Ella and then her phone. She types something out, closes
her eyes and hits send. Done.

KYLIE
There. Happy now?

Ella returns to her previous position, looking ahead.

ELLA (PLAYFULLY)
Yep. Thank you.

Kylie laughs. She leans back against the bench. They sit in silence,
watching the sun set over the trees.
After a while – Kylie’s phone buzzes, she checks it. A response

Knowing You – FINAL SCRIPT 14.04.20

JOE (TEXT)
Who is this?

Kylie refreshes her phone and the message disappears. The account has
blocked.

(EXT.) – THE STREET – MORNING

Kylie leaves her house, the same as before. She joins the pavement as
Joe walks past. He has headphones in, his eyes on the floor and his
focus on walking.
Kylie smiles to herself. She’s excited to talk to him.

KYLIE
Hey

Joe looks up. He’s confused and it shows as his steps falter briefly.

JOE
Hi?

He nods in greeting and quickens his pace again, walking away. Kylie is
left behind, watching him go. She smiles.
