Pre-University Exam 2013-14

Subject: R.A.C. Subject Code: (EME: 604)

B.Tech. VI Semester
Time: 2hr Max. Marks: 100
Note: Use of RAC data book

Q1. Attempt any two: (10*2=20)

Q1 (a). A refrigeration system is working on reversed Carnot cycle between higher and lower
temperature of 40 oC respectively. Determine its C.O.P. It is desired to increase the C.O.P. of the
cycle to 4.75 by changing the temperature of the cycle. If the increase (or decrease) in higher
temperature is equal to the decrease (or increase) in lower temperature, calculate the new
temperature of the cycle.

Q1(b). A refrigeration system working on Reversed Brayton cycle operates between 1 bar and 5 bar.
The temperatures at the inlet to the compressor and expander are 30 oC and 40 oC respectively.
Isentropic efficiency for the compressor is 0.8 and the same for the expansion is 0.9. If the capacity
of the system is 5 Tons of refrigeration, determine:

(i) Mass flow rate of refrigerant (air)

(ii) Power input to the compressor.

Take: ϒ=1.4 and Cp=1.004 KJ/KG K

Q1(c). Enumerate the classification of Air refrigeration systems and differentiate between a simple
aircraft refrigeration system and a Boot strap refrigeration system. What do you understand by
DART?

Q2. Attempt any two: (10*2=20)

Q2(a). Using schematic and P-h diagram, explain the working of Cascade refrigeration system.
Compare it with multi-stage system.

Q2(b). The condenser and evaporator temperatures of a 20T capacity, simple saturated vapour
compression refrigeration system are 40 oC and -20 oC resp. The refrigerant used in the system is R-
22. Draw the cycle on P-H diagram (assuming isentropic compression) and calculate (i) the mass of
refrigerant to be circulated (ii) Power required in the compressor and (iii) the C.O.P. of the cycle. “If
the system employees 5 oC subcooling of refrigerant liquid and a superheating of 10 oC of refrigerant
vapour. What will be the new C.O.P. of the cycle? Whether it will increase or decrease.

Q2(c). A 100 TR system using R-12 is to operate on a two stage vapour compression refrigeration
system with a flash chamber. The refrigerant is evaporating at -40 C (0.641n bar), flash chamber
works on an intermediate temperature of 0 oC (7.45 bar). Low pressure operate between 0.641 bar
and 3.08 bar, and the high pressure compressor and expansion valve operate between 3.08 bar and
7.45 bar. Sturated vapour enters both the compressors and saturated liquid enters each expansion
valves. Determine: (i) the flow rate of refrigerant handled by each compressor. (ii) the power
requirement of compressors. (iii) C.O.P. of the system.

Use superheated properties of R-12 and saturated properties of R-12

Q3. Attempt any two: (10*2=20)

Q3(a). Two aqua ammonia streams at a pressure of 20 bar with a mass flow rate of 2 kg/s each are
adiabatically mixed. First stream is saturated liquid at concentration of 0.8 while second stream is at
a temperature of 150 oC and concentration of 0.2. Find the temperature, concentration, and specific
enthalpy of mixed streams after adiabatic mixing. Also determine the concentration of liquid and
vapour phases.

Q3(b). (i) Explain the method of obtaining an isotherm (in two phase region) on
enthalpy=concentration (h-c) diagram for a mixture. (ii) Compare aqua ammonia vapour absorption
refrigeration system with Li-Br water absorption refrigeration system.

Q3(c). A stream of 15 kg/s of aqua ammonia having concentration of 0.8 and a pressure of 5 bar
mixes with another saturates liquid stream with flow rate 10 kg/s at 100 C at the same pressure.
During mixing it receives heat at the rate of 4000 KJ/s. Obtain mixture concentration, enthalpy, and
amount of liquid and vapour after mixing.

Q4. Attempt any two: (10*2=20)

Q4(a). In an air conditioner the outdoor air (at 40 C DBT) and 43% RH is mixed with return (from
room) air (at 25 C DBT and 50% RH) in the ratio of 3:2 before entering the cooling coil. The by-pass
factor for the cooling is 0.25 and the room sensible heat factor (RSHF) is 0.8. Air flow rate (total)
through the cooling coil is 8 kg/s. Determine: (i) ADP (ii) Condition of air at inlet and exit of the
cooling coil. (iii) Tonnage of the plant, and (iv) rate of condensation.

Q4(b). Plotting phychomeytric chart (s) (on your answer book). Explain common phychometric
processes on this chart.

Q4(c). Give thermal analysis of human body. Discuss comfort chart and explain effective
temperature.

Q5. Attempt any two: (10*2=20)

Q5(a). With the help of example, explain the following methods of duct design: (i) Equal Frictiob
method (ii) Velocity Reduction method.

Q5(b). Describe various types of Cooling Towers with the help of neat sketches.

Q5(c). With the help of neat sketch describe the working of Ice Plant.
