Structural Analysis (Bending Moments)

1. Compute wDC
a. Weight of deck
b. Weight of girder
c. Weight of barriers
d. Weight of sidewalk

2. Compute wDW
a. Weight of wearing surface
b. Utilities = 10% of (DC + wearing surface)

3. Divide DC and DW by the number of girders to get wDC and wDW

4. Use the concept of influence lines to determine the maximum bending moment

5. Compute the maximum bending moments (+ or -), M DC and MDW

6. Compute MLL+IM without distribution factor

a. Max positive moment (case 1 & case 2)
b. Max negative moment (case 3 & 4)
Note: Apply IM only for truck and tandem load
IM = 33% (for truck or tandem only; not for lane).
Exceptions are:
Deck joints: IM = 75%
Fatigue limit state: IM = 15%

Interior Beams
1. Compute the distribution factor for Live load for interior beams (Cast-in-place concrete tee beam)
a. AASHTO distribution factor method for interior beams (do not apply multiple presence
factor)

Distribution Factor Range of Applicability

Note: S, L, ts are in mm, Kg is in mm4

b. Lever rule
Apply multiple presence factor after calculation of R

2. Compute the maximum live load moment multiplied by distribution factor.

3. Apply load factors from indicated in the DGCS 2015 Volume 5 or AASHTO LRFD 2014.
