History: Founded in 1990 in Bilbao, Spain, by Mikel Urizarbarrena, the company has been
called Panda Software for its first 17 years. Under this brand, it became market leader in Spain in
1995 and started its international expansion in 1996. It currently has direct sales presence in 56
countries through an extensive network of subsidiaries and franchises. The year 2007 has been
an inflection point, opening a new era in the company’s history to consolidate its international
expansion. To start, we have changed brand: we are now called Panda Security, a name that
better reflects our commitment to providing global security. Furthermore, important investment

From Panda Software to Panda Security.

From now on, our company will be called Panda Security. We
have a new name that emphasizes our commitment to IT
security and perfectly defines who we are:

• It clearly reflects our mission: keep our customers' computers free from
all types of security threats, providing global protection to both corporate and
home users.
• It is a more appropriate name for our activities and our range of
products and services. To offer global security to our customers, our
company has various lines of business. Of course, we specialize in developing
security software. But we also offer other types of solutions, such as security
appliances and managed security.
• It connects directly with the needs of our users. Users have a basic and
essential need: security. Panda Security does everything necessary to
provide it as simply and effectively as possible.

Why we are no longer Panda Software.

Panda Software, the original name of our company, was related to the origins of our company as
a software developer. Sometime ago, we realized that in order to be truly effective and offer a
better service to our customers, we must specialize. Therefore, we have focused exclusively on
developing security solutions for all types of users, security for enterprise and antivirus.

Thanks to Collective Intelligence, Panda's exclusive cloud-computing technology,

the company's 2010 solutions leverage the knowledge gathered from the
community of millions of Panda users around the world. Each new file received is
automatically classified within six minutes and the Collective Intelligence servers

based security solutions, today formally announced its foray into the Indian market.

As a first step, the company announced the appointment of Cyberstar Infocom, the
emerging distributor of IT peripherals in the Indian Subcontinent, as exclusive distributor for
India.

Panda Security, with millions of customers spread across 195 countries in the world, offers
an extensive range of real time security solutions for small to mid-sized enterprises home
users, online shoppers and netbook users. Panda’s extensive range of security solutions for
small and mid-enterprises covers the protection needs of the organization at different levels

The security market share according to Oesisok

Oesisok, the independent international software certification institution, published its Worldwide
Antivirus Market Share Report just a few days ago. This study analyzes the security solutions
installed or used by 50 million computers around the world, the vast majority in the United
States.

Even though the sample of the study is not clearly specified, the software found seems to
indicate that it was home users (most applications being either free or retail solutions). The data
gathered offers a view of the current consumer solution market, or at least gives an idea of each
vendor’s market share.

I’d like to highlight the fact that 50% of the antivirus applications used belong to European
vendors, whereas only 30% are American brands. This is very significant, especially if you
consider that most computers in the report were based in the US.

Also, the freemium model (already covered on this blog) is a very valid option: 42% of all PCs
had a free application installed. Actually, vendors offering free antivirus applications capture
40% of the market share.

Given that Panda is the only company with a traditional business model that has released a free
antivirus to the market (and I don’t mean a promo version of our products with free services for a
certain period of time, something we all do), I wonder what criteria have been applied to classify
Panda…

In any event I am very pleased to see we occupy a very good position in the report. Actually, our
market share is substantially larger, as the study does not contemplate antivirus solutions
installed in companies.
We hope our colleagues at Oesisok repeat this study in the next few months so that we can also
analyze the market trend, especially at the end of the year, when we all launch the new versions
of our products for home users.

Introduction
Although the true market share of security applications often remains hidden, software vendors
will claim to dominate a market based on their sales numbers vs. the reported sales numbers of
their competitors. However, as a unique alternative, we are able to present the following report
based purely on the detection of the applications that tens of thousands of users actually have
installed on their endpoints.

Because application detection relies on the detection capabilities of the OESIS Framework, data
is limited to applications that are included in the framework’s libraries. Antivirus vendors looking
for inclusion in the OESIS Framework are free to partner with OPSWAT through the OESIS OK
Certification Program, which offers interoperability certification for security applications.

Conclusions
It is useful to see the sheer variety of vendors that are occupying a 1-6% antivirus application
market share. Though, in the United States, Symantec and McAfee are often positioned as the
top choices, the reality is that competition is alive and well in this highly-fragmented sector.
Innovations in anti-malware products are therefore, likely partially a function of the increasing
variety/intelligence of malware authors as well as a desire to stay afloat in a highly competitive
marketplace.

European vendors, which include: AVAST, Avira, AVG, ESET, Panda, BitDefender, G Data
and Sophos total just over 50% of the market. Whereas US-based vendors, which include:
Symantec, Microsoft, McAfee, PC Tools (acquired by Symantec), Sunbelt and Comodo make
up just over 30%.
Microsoft has established itself as a significant competitor in the security application space,
making the WA-based giant a legitimate challenger to pure-play security players Symantec and
McAfee.

42% of the product market is controlled by free products, while vendors that primarily offer a free
product have a 48% market share. It would appear that end users have as much faith in the ability
of free antivirus applications to keep them secure as they do paid antivirus.

The Research
Out of the 50 million endpoints that employ the OESIS Framework, OPSWAT collected data
from tens of thousands of volunteers. The information collected from OPSWAT’s various tools
had a high rate of correlation. That is to say, when comparing reports, despite these tools having
different uses, percentages of antivirus product usage were consistent. This consistency would
suggest our data has a high degree of reliability.

Panda Security, a cloud-based security solutions provider, today appointed of

Cyberstar Infocom, an IT peripherals distributor in the Indian Subcontinent, as
exclusive distributor for India.

Talking about the partnership with Cyberstar, Chin Yoke Mon, MD, Panda Security shared,
“Though we have been in India for a few years now, we felt this is the right time to expand and
partner with Cyberstar as an exclusive distributor to offer the Panda Security products and
customer support that will enhance and complement our business. Cyberstar is very aggressive
on the marketing front and we felt that they would be the perfect platform to showcase our
products.”

Initially, the security provider will offer products like Antivirus Pro 2011, Global Protection
2011, Internet Security 2011 and Internet Security for Netbooks in the India.

“We are gearing up our channels, training them on how to capitalize on the Panda business
opportunity and have on a war-footing begun appointment of at least one sub-disti across 50
leading cities in India,” remarked Raj Rathi, MD, Cyberstar Infocom.

The distribution company informed that it has established a post sales tech support centre in
India for Panda customers to offer tollfree pre and post sale support. Well trained engineers have
been deployed by the company at its key offices to offer real time partner and customer technical
support.

Panda Partners With CyberStar

In a bid to breathe life into its India business, Panda Security has entered into an exclusive
distribution agreement with Cyberstar Infocom.

Cyberstar will distribute Panda’s entire portfolio including Panda ActiveScan 2.0 range of end-
point security, UTM appliances under the GateDefender brand and cloud security offerings in
form of CloudOffice Protection and CloudEmail Protection.

“Though we have been in India for a few years now, we felt this is the right time to expand and
partner with Cyberstar as a distributor to offer installation and customer support that will
enhance and complement our business,” said Chin Yoke Mon, Marketing Director, Panda
Security.

Cyberstar will appoint a set of authorized sub-distributors for market coverage and penetration
for Panda products. “We will be appointing one sub-distributor in each of the leading 50 cities.
We have established a call center in Chennai exclusively for Panda customers and will offer toll-
free support. We have deployed 15 engineers for partner and customer support, and plan to
double the team soon,” said Raj Rathi, Managing Director, Cyberstar Infocom.

Cyberstar plans to sell 50,000 boxes of Panda’s consumer antivirus per month. The consumer
offerings consist of Panda Antivirus Pro 2011, Internet Security 2011 and Global Protection
2011.

Yoke Mon informed that Panda will launch its UTM appliances—GateDefender Performa for
large enterprises and GateDefender Integra for small businesses, and its cloud offerings—six
months later.
