Millicent Atkins School of Education: Common Lesson Plan Template

Teacher Candidate Name: Nathan Schafer

Grade Level: Lower Level SPED (K-2)
Subject: Special Education
Date: 03/21/20
PLANNING
List the Common Core/State Standard(s) to be addressed in this lesson.

Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text. (Rl. 1.2)

List the Rationale (cite theories or theorists):

Anita Archer – I used direct instruction with the student for this assessment to make sure the directions were very
clear. Carol Dweck – If the student struggled with something, I would use Dweck’s strategy of reinforcing the student
and letting them know that they can do it. Using that growth mindset strategy is huge for a student.

List the learning objective(s) to be addressed in this lesson (specific, measurable, attainable, timebound).
Use the following format: “Students will be able to…”

The student will be able to identify the main topic and retell/write down the key details of a passage as part of an
assessment. This assessment will be used to measure growth in the students within this standard. I will read the
passage to the student if they prefer me to do so, and they will then have to figure out the answers to the questions
on their own. I can guide them a little but cannot give them answers.

Describe how the learning objective(s) and the learning outcomes is/are appropriate for the
age/developmental level of the students.

These learning objectives are relevant to the student because it covers this specific standard that this particular
student is working to grow in. Understanding key details of a text along with identifying the main idea is something
the student has been working at through the school year. This is an assessment that will be used to assess how much
the student has grown. This will give the teacher (Ms. Lane) a good idea of where the student is for this content
standard.

Describe the Classroom Demographics: (e.g., ethnicities; gender ratios; special needs, including those of
gifted students, those of students’ physical needs, and those due to cultural characteristics).
This classroom contains children from the grades of kindergarten through second grade. They usually come to the
resource room with other students in their grade. The classroom contains some students that have behavioral
issues, and some that struggle academically. It can also contain students that have problems with both. As far as
disabilities, some students potentially may have one, but I was never told who did or didn’t have a disability.
Describe your Knowledge of Students: (in terms of the whole class and individual students)
(e.g., language needs; approaches to learning; prior learning and experiences; academic
proficiencies/behavioral differences; areas of interest).
There is a wide spread of different students in this class. There are some students that do perfectly fine in academics
but lack social skills. There are some students that have good social skills but struggle with academics. There’s such a
wide variety of students.
List the materials/resources you will need to teach the lesson.
I will need the sheet that has the passage and questions on it. I will also need the student and U to go to a quiet area
like the hallway to limit interruptions.

Technology
Describe the instructional and/or assistive technology that you plan to incorporate into the lesson and explain how it
will enhance instruction and student learning.

I won’t need any type of technology for this assessment.

Accommodations: Base this on the information you provided for Classroom Demographics and
Knowledge of Students above.
Describe the accommodations/differentiation/modifications you will use to meet the needs of all learners
and accommodate differences in students’ learning, culture, language, etc. *
I specifically didn’t have to make any modifications to this assessment since it was the teacher’s sheet.

Pre-Assessment: Describe the instrument or process you will use to measure students’ level of
understanding toward the learning objective(s) prior to teaching the lesson.

N/A

Pre-Assessment: Describe how the results of the pre-assessment (what the students have demonstrated
they know) will be used to design the lesson objectives, instruction, and post-assessment. (Include charts,
graphs if applicable)
N/A

Classroom Management
Identify the management and motivational strategies you will use to meet student behavioral/developmental needs
in order to keep students on task and actively engaged throughout the lesson.

Some classroom management strategies I will use will include positive reinforcement, clear and definite
directions and rules, and a firm but loving voice.

Implementation
“I Do”
(Teacher introduces lesson and models expected outcome(s) of learning objectives)
Describe what instructional strategies you will use to model/explain/demonstrate the knowledge and skills
required of the objective.
Okay, so you (Insert student’s name) and I are going to go to the hallway, so we can complete this little
worksheet here with a passage on it. [We walk out to the hallway and sit on the floor] Okay, so these
questions down below are going to be about the little passage we have to read up above. Now, I’m going
to read that passage. After that, Ms. Lane said that you must complete the questions yourself. I cannot
help you with the questions, but I can help if you have trouble reading any words. [I read the passage to
the student] Alright, now let’s answer these five questions here about the story. (I would include all the
questions in this part, but I can’t remember all five of them.)

“We Do”
(Teacher engages students in guided practice)
Describe the learning activities you will use to provide students multiple opportunities to practice the skills and
content needed to meet the learning objective(s).
Okay, so now we can both read each of the questions together as we get to each one. Let’s both read the
first question together. [We both read the question together] Okay, now you go ahead and write down
what you think the answer is. [Students answers 1st question] Okay, now let’s read the second question
together. [We read the question together] Now go ahead and answer that one. [Student answers 2 nd
question] Alright, now let’s read the third question together. [We read the question together] Okay, now
answer the 3rd one here. [Students answers the 3rd question] Now let’s read the fourth question together
here. [We read the 4th question together] Now go ahead and answer the 4th question. [Student answers the
4th question] Okay perfect, now let’s read the last question together. [We read the last question together]
Now go ahead and answer the last question here, and then we can go back into the classroom. [Student
answers the last question] Perfect, you did a great job. Now let’s go ahead and go back into the classroom.

“You Do”
(Students engage in independent practice)
Describe what the students will do to independently practice the knowledge and skills required by the lesson
objectives?
Okay, now you go ahead and write down what you think the answer is. [Students answers 1st question]
Now go ahead and answer the second one. [Student answers 2nd question] Okay, now answer the 3rd one
here. [Students answers the 3rd question] Now go ahead and answer the 4th question. [Student answers the
4th question] Now go ahead and answer the last question here, and then we can go back into the
classroom. [Student answers the last question]

Lesson Closing
Describe how you will reemphasize the lesson objective(s) and any skills/content that were taught in an
interactive manner (whole/small group, etc.).
Perfect, you did a great job. Now let’s go ahead and go back into the classroom.

Post-Assessment: APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson post-assessment you will use to measure
students’ level of understanding toward the learning objectives after teaching the lesson.

N/A

Analyze
Post Assessment: Based on the results of the Pre and Post-Assessment, to what extent did students achieve the
learning goals/objective of the lesson? Cite examples from the lesson plan, assessments, and/or video.
If applicable, insert a table/chart/graph before your explanation.
N/A

Reflect
Reflect on your instructional strategies, interactions with students, and classroom management strategies. Describe
what went well and what areas you need to revise in the future. Cite examples (from video) that support your
conclusions.
Describe revisions that you could make if you were to teach this lesson again. Why would you make each revision?
Cite examples from the lesson plan, video and/or student work that would prompt revisions.
Overall, I think the assessment went well. The hallway allowed for pretty much no distractions at all. The student
was also very compliant, and we flew through the assessment. He did a really good job, and really only needed help
with pronouncing certain words. I feel like using the firm, but loving voice was the main classroom management
strategy used in the assessment. I used that the most, and it was very effective. I also used positive reinforcement
quite often after the student successfully pronounced words and successfully answered the questions. This was also
very effective in avoiding any frustration or dis-satisfaction from the student. The student was never really off task,
so I never had to redirect his attention back to the assessment. If I did this assessment, one thing I’d change would
be reading things a little faster. I feel like we took a little long which is fine, but I think that we could have went faster
on reading the questions and passage and still allow for the student to fully understand the material being read to
him.
