THE IMPORTANCE OF STANDARDS IN PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

There are certain laws that needs to be discussed in pertaining to the practice of
Architecture. As a student of Architecture, we need to know the basic laws and the
rights that we have for us to be able to comply every phase of doing our projects in the
future. It is needed to be discussed so that we are knowledgeable in our field.

In Code of Ethical Conduct, I learned that there are things that need to be
discussed between the Architect and the client that communication is the most
important thing that you need to start the project, that the client are not always right, the
architect must set his standards right to his profession. It is also thought in the law how
to act good and to have an idea in his practice.

It is also stated in the law that being an Architect you have to be compassionate,
there is a civic responsibility in the professional pursuit. One must share his idea and
knowledge to others, it must not limit his knowledge to himself. I also learned that the
Architect must not advertise himself, he must be down to earth and let his name lead
him. Obeying the laws make a man a respected. The standards of professional practice
will be a guide to the Architects to make his job better and also help the environment to
have better place to live in so that changes may start on people who are well-informed
to the law.

The Architect must not render professional services without a professional

service agreement, because it is stated the they should offer or provide a preliminary
service on a conditional basis to have a definite agreement with the client. So that when
things go wrong with the client when they withdraw from the deal, the architect still a
have a percentage on the preliminary agreement.

In SPP Document 201 Article VI in relation to his colleagues and subordinates,

there is a statement wherein you must not take the project of the other Architect without
them knowing, it is very unprofessional to take projects to other and they must solicit
any project known to him. They must not affix his/her signature and seal to any plans or
other documents prepared by others without the direct supervision of them, because if
they got involved in any circumstances in the project the architect is responsible of it. He
might get caught and be sued in the project which he didn’t agree on or without his
knowledge.

It is indicated also in the document wherein you will know that there are writing
documents in terms of architectural commission, like the scope of work the delineation
of responsibilities, any limitation of responsibilities, fee or method of calculating it, mode
of dispute resolution and any provision for termination. So that the architect has the
knowledge in undertaking his works and the process of the project he is going to do,

The Design phase or the scope of pre-design services wherein the consultation
or the starting of the project is indicated in the SPP document. There is thee pre-
feasibility wherein the architect analyze the and studied the project he will present to the
client, and other studies. knowing this kind of phase will let him be confident in
presenting the project to his clients.

In method of compensation is the fee of the architects work where you will know
the percentage in every design phase that you will encounter.

There are a lot of laws in Standards of Professional Practice, this will be a guide
to the Architects and also to the future Architects so that they are well equipped and
guided in the practicing architecture. They are ready to face the legal matters if they
know the importance of this document and it will also prevent the discrimination of the
profession to other professions that we have. The clients will also give their trust to the
architects if they can see that the architect knows every details in their profession. One
must obey the law and has the knowledge of it.
