Multivariable Function
1.2 LIMIT AND CONTINUITY OF MULTIVARIABLE FUNCTION
Limit
Limits describe how a function behave near a point, instead of at that point.
Limit
1st attempt: Determine 𝑓(𝑎, 𝑏) define or not. If not try 2nd attempt
2nd attempt: Simplify 𝑓 𝑥, 𝑦 (if not applicable try 3rd attempt), then check again 𝑓 𝑎, 𝑏 defined
or not.
3rd attempt: Show the limit of the function 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) does not exist. Choose any two smooth
curves (or lines) which pass through the point (𝑎, 𝑏), and show the values of the limit are not
the same from those two directions. Hence, conclude that the limit for that function does not
exist
Example 1
𝑥𝑦 4
Evaluate lim if it exist. If not, show the limit does not exist.
(𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0) 𝑥 2 +𝑦 8
0
1st attempt: 𝑓 0,0 = undefined
0
𝑥𝑦 4
2nd attempt: cannot be simplified
𝑥 2 +𝑦 8
3rd attempt: Choose any two smooth curves (or lines) which pass through the point (0,0)
i. Choose line: 𝑦 = 0
𝑥𝑦 4 𝑥(0)4
lim = lim = lim 0 = 0
(𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0) 𝑥 2 +𝑦 8 (𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0) 𝑥 2 +(0)8 𝑥→0
Not same – limit does not
ii. Choose curve: 𝑥 = 𝑦 4 exist
𝑥𝑦 4 𝑦4𝑦4 1 1
lim = lim = lim =
(𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0) 𝑥 2 +𝑦 8 (𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0) 𝑦 8 +𝑦 8 𝑥→0 2 2
Continuity
*Draw without picking up my pen!
Function of two variable 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) is continuous at point (𝑎, 𝑏) if all the following 3 conditions are
fulfilled.
1. 𝑓 𝑎, 𝑏 is defined
2. lim 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) exist
(𝑥,𝑦)→(𝑎,𝑏)

3. lim 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑓(𝑎, 𝑏)

(𝑥,𝑦)→(𝑎,𝑏)
Example 2
Determine whether the function
𝑥 2 −𝑦 2
𝑖𝑓 (𝑥, 𝑦) ≠ (0,0)
𝑓 𝑥, 𝑦 = 𝑥+𝑦
0 𝑖𝑓 𝑥, 𝑦 = (0,0)
Continuous at (0,0) or not.
Step 1: Find 𝑓 𝑎, 𝑏 - 𝑓 0,0 = 0
Step 2: Find the limit for function 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) when (𝑥, 𝑦) → (𝑎, 𝑏)
𝑥 2 −𝑦 2 (𝑥+𝑦)(𝑥−𝑦)
lim = lim = lim 𝑥−𝑦=0
(𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0) 𝑥+𝑦 (𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0) 𝑥+𝑦 (𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0)
Step 3: Check whether lim 𝑓 𝑥, 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑎, 𝑏) or not
(𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0)
𝑥 2 −𝑦 2
lim = 𝑓 0,0 = 0 function 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) is continuous at (0,0)
(𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0) 𝑥+𝑦
