[Hanuman's confrontation with Lankini, the spirit of Lanka.]

స లమ ఖ ల లమ యదస .

సత య హ త జః৷৷5.3.1৷৷

ల ంమ స శక ఞరః.

రమ నన ం ం వణ ৷৷5.3.2৷৷

intelligent, త జః son of the Wind-god, మ సత ః mighty, క ఞరః elephant among

vanaras, సః that, హ Hanuman, లమ ఖ on the Lamba peak, లమ యదస resembling
heavy rain-bearing cloud, ల on Lamba, స త energy, ఆ య relying on, రమ నన
rich in delightful forests, groves and pools, వణ ruled by Ravana, ల ం city of
Lanka, in the night, శ entered.

The mighty son of the Wind-god, intelligent Hanuman, an elephant among vanaras, standing on the peak of
the Lamba which looked like a high rain-bearing cloud and relying on his energy, entered by night the city of
Lanka, ruled by Ravana rich in delightful forests, groves and water pools.
ర ధర ప ర వ ప .

ఆ ద సహ హృషః రమ ৷৷5.3.7৷৷

ర ధర ప ః like autumnal clouds, భవ ః mansions, ఉప beautiful,

గ పమ sounds of the roar of the sea, గ ల served by the sea breeze,
షబలస strong with well-nourished army, ట వ ం య వ just as Vitapavati,
రణ stationed at the beautiful archways, ర ర ర provided with white
gates and archs, జ చ inhabited by snakes, protected, auspicious, గవ వ
just as Bhogavati (Patala), the abode of serpents, స ద overcast with clouds pierced by
glittering streaks of lightning, ర served by planets and stars, మన తస
winds blowing mild (out of fear of Ravana), ఇ నస Indra's, అమ వ ం య like the city of
Amaravati, త న with golden, మహ great, ణ with rampart, అ సంవ adorned
everywhere, ల ః with jingling sounds of small bells, ప ః with flags, అలఙ ృ
decorated, that, సహ at once, ఆ ద having reached, హృషః was thrilled, ర the rampart,

అ surveyed.

Hanuman, happy to reach Lanka, stood on its rampart and surveyed the city of land which was splendid with
beautiful mansions overcast with autumnal clouds pierced by glittering streaks of lightning, served by planets
and stars with mild winds blowing (out of fear of Ravana), with the roaring sounds of the sea and with a
well-fed army like Vitapavati (that is Alaka, the capital of Kubera, half-brother of Ravana and the treasurer
of celestials), which had elephants sationed at the outer gates, provided with white archways and protected
by serpents like the auspicious city of Bhogavati (capital of Patala). Surrounded by a golden rampart, the city
resembled Amaravati, the capital of Indra, decorated with flags fluttering, echoing with the jingling sounds
of small bells.

the city, సర తః all over, ఆ క surveying, స షహృదయః wonder-struck at heart, తతః

then, క ః vanara, హ Hanuman, జ నదమ ః full of gold, ః shutters,
ర కృత ః platforms encrusted with vaidurya, వ జస క ః with diamonds, crystals and
pearls, మ మ ః studded with gems, త ప టక ః made of molten gold,
జ మల ః pure white silver floors, ర కృత ః stairs-cases encrusted with vaidurya,
నర ం ః covered with crystal grains, సంజవ ః with lovely quadrangles,
ఞ బ ణస ౖ ః echoing with sounds of Krauncha birds and Peacocks, జహంస ః inhabited
by royal swans, ఖ sky, ఉత వ rising into the sky, ః auspicious, భరణ ః filled
with sounds of musical instruments, సర తః all over, ప resounding, వ క రప
like the replica of the city of Vaswokasara, ఖ sky, ఉత ఇవ as if risen, that, ల ం
నగ city of Lanka, gazing, జహర rejoiced.

Surveying all over, Hanuman was wonder-struck to see as though it was leaping into the sky. The city had
golden shutters, altars encrusted with vaidurya, mansions inlaid with diamonds, crystals, pearls and other
gems, crowned with pure gold and silver. The staircases built with silver were studded with vaidurya. The
beautiful quadrangles, coverd with grains of crystal were as though leaping into the air. It echoed with
sounds of krauncha birds, peacocks and royal swans. Filled with sounds of musical instruments, it resembled
the city of Vaswokasara.

ర valiant, అ త excellent, ఋ prosperous, ర enchanting,

auspicious, ప ః of the king of demons, ం that city, స gazing, న స
reflected:

Gazing at the enchanting, auspicious, prosperous city of the king of demons mighty Hanuman began to
reflect:
యమ న నగ శ ధర ంబ .

ర వణబ ద ధ ః৷৷5.3.14৷৷

ఉద ధ ః ready to fight, వణబ ః by Ravana's forces, ర protected, ఇయం నగ this

city, అ న by others, బ with force, ధర to attack, న శ not posible.

'It is not possible to attack this city by to outsiders as it is protected by the forces of Ravana with their
weapons ready(to attack).
ఙద ణస మ క ః.

ప యం భ న ద ర ৷৷5.3.15৷৷

ఇయ this, ః land, ఙద by Kumuda and Angada, మ క ః of the great vanara,

ణస for Sushena, న ద ర for Mainda and Dvivida also, ప may be accessible,
భ be.

'This land can be reached by Kumuda and Angada or the great vanara Sushena and even by Mainda and
Dvivida.
వస తస జస హ శ శపర ణః.

ఋ స క ఖ స మమ వగ ర ৷৷5.3.16৷৷

వస తః Sun's, త జస of the son, హ ః monkey's, శపర ణః of Kushaparva, క ఖ స of the

chief of vanaras, లస for Ketumala, ఋ స for Riksha (Jambavan) also, మమ వ for me also,
గ ః within reach, భ will be.

'Son of Vivaswan (Sugriva), the chief of vanaras, Kushaparva, Riksha (Jambavan) and myself also will be
able to reach this place.
స మ ఘవస ప కమ .

ల ణస చ నమభవ క ః৷৷5.3.17৷৷

క ః vanara, మ : long-armed, ఘవస Raghava's, ప కమ valour, ల ణస Lakshmana's,

నం చ valiant advances, స after considering, pleased, అభవ felt.

Reflecting upon the valour of long-armed Rama and valiant advances of Lakshmana Hamuman felt pleased
(within himself).
ం రత వస ం వతంస .

య రస మృ ం పమ వ ৷৷5.3.18৷৷

ం నష ం ౖ స శ మ గృ ః.

నగ ం నస స దదర మ క ః৷৷5.3.19৷৷

సః మ క ః the great vanara, రత వస clad in robes studded with gems, వతంస

stable houses as her ear-rings, య armouries, ఋ breasts, ornamented,
పమ వ like a young maiden, ౖ : by glittering ones, స శ by glowing, మ గృ ః by great
mansions, నష dispelled darkness, hero, నస demon king's, నగ city, దదర
saw.

Hanuman looked at the city of the demon king, whose darkness was dispelled by bright gems and mighty
mansions as if it were a young maiden. The prosperous city was like a well decorated woman, adorned with
ornaments having walls for her dress,
the stables for her ear-rings, the armouries for her breasts.
థ హ లం ప శనం మ బల .

నగ న ణ దదర పవ త జ ৷৷5.3.20৷৷

అథ then, నగ that city, హ ల tiger among vanaras, మ బల of great prowess,

పవ త జ son of the Wind-god, ప శన while he entered, న in her real, ణ form, దదర
saw.

Assuming her real form the presiding deity of Lanka noticed the son of the Wind-god, the tiger among
vanaras of great prowess entering the city.
తం హ వరం దృ ల వణ .

స య తత కృ ననదర ৷৷5.3.21৷৷

వణ ruled by Ravana, ల that Lanka, తం హ వర that best of vanaras, త త there,

దృ after seeing, కృ ననదర appeared with a distorted face, స య వ herself, ఉ rose.

Seeing the best of vanaras, the deity of the city of Lanka, ruled by Ravana rose up before him in a distorted
form.
ర త వర స ర షత.

ఞ మ దమ బ త వ త జ ৷৷5.3.22৷৷

క వర స at the great vanara, ః of the son of the Wind-god, ర in front of, అ షత

stood, మ ద loud sound, ఞ while producing, పవ త జ to the son of the Wind-god,
అబ said.

She stood in front of the son of the Wind-god and spoke to him in a loud voice.
కస ం న చ ణ ఇహ వ లయ.

కథయ హ యతత ం వ ధర ৷৷5.3.23৷৷

వ లయ one who dwells in the forest, త you, కః who are you, న ణ for what purpose, ఇహ
here, పః arrived, your, ః life, వ until, ధర hold on, ఇహ here, తత truth, య
that, కథయస reveal.

"O dweller of the forest, who are you? Why did you come here? Speak the truth about your identity, so long

as you hold on to your life.

న శక ం ఖ యం ల ప ం నర త .

ర వణబ ర సమనతః৷৷5.3.24৷৷

నర vanara, వణబ ః by Ravana's army, ర protected, సమనతః everywhere, అ kept

secret, ఇయం ల this Lanka, త by you, ప to enter, న శక ం ఖ surely not possible.

"O vanara! this Lanka is a secret place protected by Ravana's army everywhere. It is surely not possible for
you to enter this city".
అథ మ బ హ న గతః .

కథ తత ం య ం త ం ప పృచ ৷৷5.3.25৷৷

అథ now, రః hero, హ Hanuman, అ గతః in front, standing, her, అ బ spoke,

య since, త you, me, ప పృచ you are enquiring, తత truly, to you, కథ
I will tell.

Then Hanuman who was standing in front of her said, "I will tell you the truth since you are asking me".
త ం పనయ ర వ ష .

మరం ం ర ర య ৷৷5.3.26৷৷

ర at the gate of the city, అవ ష stands, పనయ woman of ugly distorted eyes, త
you, who are, dreadful, me, after obstructing, మర why, ర ర య
threatening.

"Who are you, terrible woman of ugly, distorted eyes? Why are you obstructing me at the gate of the city?
Why do you impound upon me?
హ మద చనం ల మ .

ఉ చ వచనం ప షం పవ త జ ৷৷5.3.27৷৷

మ one who can assume any form at free will, ల that Lanka, హ మద చన
Hanuman's words, on hearing, enraged, పవ త జ son of Wind-god, ప ష harsh,
వచన words, ఉ చ spoke.

The spirit of Lanka who could assume any form at her will got enraged on hearing the words of Hanuman
and spake in a harsh tone.;
అహం స జస వణస మ త నః.

ఆ ప ర ర నగ ৷৷5.3.28৷৷

స జస demon king's, మ త నః of the great self, వణస Ravana's, ఆ ప waiting for his
orders, ర unassailable, అహ I, ఇ ం నగ this city, ర Iam protecting.

"In obedience to the orders of the great demon king, Ravana, I am protecting this unassailable city.
నశ మవ య ప ం నగ త .

అద ః ప త కః స ప హ మ ৷৷5.3.29৷৷

myself, అవ య after ignoring, నగ into this city, త by you, ప to enter, న శ

not possible, అద now, మ by me, హతః slayed, క
ః life, ప త ః giving up life, స ప you
will attain eternal sleep.

"It is not possible for you to enter this city ignoring my presence. Soon you will be killed. You will give up
your life and attain eternal sleep.
అహం నగ ల స య వ పవఙమ.

సర తః ప ర త క తం మ ৷৷5.3.30৷৷

పవఙమ monkey, అహ I, స య myself, ల నగ city of Lanka, సర తః all over, ప ర I

will be protecting, ఏత as such, to you, మ by me, క తం is told.

"O monkey! I am the presiding ogress of Lanka presenting myself personally. I am to protect this city. This is
my answer to you".
ల వచనం హ త జః.

యత న హ షః త లఇ పరః৷৷5.3.31৷৷

త జః son of the Wind-god, హ షః best of the monkeys, సః he, హ Hanuman,

ల ః Lanka's, వచన words, on hearing, యత he got ready, అపరః another, లః
mountain, తః stood, ఇవ like.

On hearing the words of ogress of Lanka, the son of the Wind-god stood up ready and appeared like another
mountain.
స ం ప కృ ం దృష నర ఙవః.

ఆబ థ సత పవగరభః৷৷5.3.32৷৷

అథ and then, wise one, సత powerful, పవగరభః a bull among vanaras, నర ఙవః chief
of vanaras, సః that, ప కృ monster of a woman, her, దృ after seeing, ఆబ
spoke.

Seeing the monster of a woman, the powerful Hanuman, bull among vanaras endowed with wisdom spoke to
her.
ద నగ ం ల ం ట ర ర .

శఙ మం కం పశ సవ ం పత .

ఇత ర హ సం పః పరం హలం ৷৷5.3.33৷৷

ట ర ర market-places, ramparts and gateways, శఙ freely, ఇమం కం this world,

ల ం నగ Lanka city, ద I see, ఇత ర for this reason, ఇహ here, సం పః I came here,
to myself, పర great, హలం curiosity

"I would like to see this Lanka with market-places, gateways and ramparts. I have come here for that
purpose. My curiosity has been roused to see this place.

వ పవ హల ః న చ.

సర గృహ ద గమనం ৷৷5.3.34৷৷

ల ః Lanka's, వ gardens, ఉపవ groves, న చ and even forests, సర తః all over,

గృహ important houses, ద to see, ఇహ here, myself, ఆగమనం have arrived.

"I have arrived here to see Lanka's gardens, groves and forests and also all the important houses".
తస తద చనం ల మ .

య ఏవ న క ంబ ప ర ৷৷5.3.35৷৷

మ one who can assume any form at free will, ల Lanka, తస his, త that, వచన words,
after hearing, నః again, యః ఏవ more, క words, ప ర in harsh words,
బ spoke.

On hearing Hanuman, the ogress of Lanka, who could assume any form, replied in harsh words:
మ త శ ర ం.

న శక మద ద ం యం న ధమ৷৷5.3.36৷৷

O evil-minded one!, న ధమ foolish monkey, me, అ త without conquering me,

శ ర ం ruled by the demon king, ఇయం this city, అద now, ద to see, by you,
న శక not possible.

"O evil-minded, foolish monkey! It is not possible for you to enter the city ruled by Ravana, the king of
demons without conquering me".
తతః స క ల చ చ .

దృ ంభ న య గత ৷৷5.3.37৷৷

తతః then, సః that, క ల: tiger among monkeys, her, చ night-walker, ఉ చ said,

భ O noble one, ఇ this, city, దృ after seeing, నః again, య గత as I came,
I will go .

The tiger among monkeys said to the, the night-walker "O noble Lanka! I shall see this city and go back".
తతః కృ మ దం ల భ వహ .

త న నర షం డ స ৷৷5.3.38৷৷

తతః then, ల that Lanka, భ వహ frightening, మ ద loud noise, కృ after making,

with speed, నర ష best vanara, త న with her palm, డ స struck.

Then the ogress of Lanka made a loud and frightening sound and struck the most powerful vanara with the
palm of her hand.
తతః స క లఙ భృశ .

న ద మ దం ర పవ త జః৷৷5.3.39৷৷

తతః then, లఙ by Lanka, భృశ very much (badly), తః hit, ర heroic one, పవ త జః
son of the Wind-god, సః క లః that tiger among vanaras, మ ద loud noise, న ద made.

At this strong slap, the heroic Hanuman, son of the Wind-god roared loudly.
తతః సంవర స మహసస ః.

జ ంహ ధ తః৷৷5.3.40৷৷

మన న ధః స యం కృతః.

తతః then, సః that, హ Hanuman, ధ తః overcome by anger, మహసస left hand,

అ ః fingers, సంవర స clenched, ఏ her, with his fist, అ జ న hit her, చ
ఇ that she is a woman, మన న considering, స య himself, అ ధః outrageous, న కృతః did
not develop.

Overcome by anger, Hanuman clenched the fingers of his left hand and hit her with his fist. Considering her
to be, after all, a woman he did not turn outrageous.
న ప ణ హ చ ৷৷5.3.41৷৷

ప త సహ కృ ననదర .

that, చ night roamer, న ప ణ that stroke, హ her limbs shattered, సహ at

once, on the, ప త fell, కృ ననదర with her face distorted.

Struck by the blow of Hanuman the demoness fell down on the ground at once, her limbs shattered, her face
distorted.
తత హ జ ం దృ ৷৷5.3.42৷৷

కృ ంచ ర జ మన నః యం .

తతః then, జః wise, జ brilliaint, హ Hanuman, fallen woman, her,

దృ after seeing, her, య is a woman, మన నః thinking in the mind, కృ
compassion, చ ర showed.

Wise and brilliant Hanuman, seeing the deity fallen down, left her (without killing her) out of compassion,
thinking that she is a woman, after all.
త భృశసం ల గద ర ৷৷5.3.43৷৷

ఉ గ తం క ంహ మ న ం ప వ ఙమ .

తతః then, that, ల Lanka, భృశసం greatly agitated, గద ర with choked voice,
అగ త deflated of pride, క these words, పవఙమ to the monkey, హ మన to Hanuman,
ఉ చ said.

Thereafter, the deflated demoness of Lanka with an agitated voice, said to Hanuman, the monkey-hero:
ప ద మ యస హ సతమ ৷৷5.3.44৷৷

సమ మ ష సత వ మ బ ః.

మ O long-armed, హ సతమ great monkey, ప ద be gracious, యస save me, మ

త న
noble, స వ ః hero of great strength, మ బ ః strong, సమ when the time comes, ష abide.

"O, strong-shouldered great monkey! be gracious. Save me. Heroes endowed with great strength stay back
when the time comes.
అహం నగ ల స య వ పవఙమ৷৷5.3.45৷৷

హం త ర క ణమ బల.

పవఙమ O monkey!, అహం I, on my part, స య self, ల నగ వ city of Lanka itself, మ బల

O strong one, ర O hero, అహ I, త by you, క ణ with valour, won.

"O monkey! I am Lanka incarnate. You have conquered me by your strength and valour.
ఇదం తథ ం శృ వ హ శ ర৷৷5.3.46৷৷

స యం దతం వర నం య మమ.

హ శ ర O lord of vanaras!, in the past, మమ to me, స యం by the creator Brahma, య as,

వర న a boon, దత given, ఇద this, తథ ం it is true, వ while I tell you, to my
self, శృ listen.

"O lord of vanaras! in the past Creator Brahma had given me a boon which has come true. I will tell you.
listen.
య ం నరః క క ద శ న ৷৷5.3.47৷৷

త త యం ర ం భయ గత .

య when, క one, నరః vanara, క by his prowess, you, వశ ఆన

vanquishes you,త then, for demons, భయ danger, ఆగత will set in, త by you,
య know.

'When a vanara vanquishes you by his prowess, you may know that destruction of ogres will set in.
స సమయః మ ద తవ దర ৷৷5.3.48৷৷

స యం తః స నత వ కమః.

మ O gentle one!, అద today, తవ your, దర by your appearance, my, సః సమయః

that time, పః approached, స యం తః this is ordained by Brahma, సత ః it is ture, తస his
words, వ కమః a different course of action, not possible.

"O gentle one! the time ordained by Brahma has come today with your presence here. The truth revealed by
Brahma, the self-born, cannot be proved otherwise.
తం జ వణస త నః৷৷5.3.49৷৷

ర ం వస ం శః స గతః.

త నః of the evil-minded, జః of the king, వణస Ravana's, స of all, ర ం చ and

demons, త caused by Sita, శః ruin, స గతః has come.

"The ruin of all demons and evil-minded king Ravana will take place due to (the abduction of) Sita.
తత శ హ ష ం వణ ৷৷5.3.50৷৷

ధత సర హ ఞ .

హ ష O great vanara!, త therefore, వణ ruled by Ravana, city, ప శ after

entering, ఇహ here, whatever, ఞ you wish to do, సర all works, ధత
undertake.

"O great vanara! enter the city ruled by Ravana and accomplish your purpose.
ప శ పహ ం హ శ ర ం ం స ఖ .

యదృచ త ం జన త ంస ం ర సర త గ య ఖ ৷৷5.3.51৷৷

హ శ ర O lord of vanaras!, పహ doomed by curse, స ఖ ruled by the demon

chief, auspicious, city, యదృచ freely, ప శ on entering, త you, సర త all
over, గతః gone, య ఖ with pleasure, స a chaste lady, జన త daughter of Janaka,
రస search.

"O lord of vanaras! you may search for the chaste lady, daughter of king Janaka all over freely entering this
doomed city, ruled by the chief of demons.
ఇ మ యఆ నర తృ యస రః৷৷
Thus ends the third sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.

the city, సర తః all over, ఆ క surveying, స షహృదయః wonder-struck at heart, తతః

then, క ః vanara, హ Hanuman, జ నదమ ః full of gold, ః shutters,
ర కృత ః platforms encrusted with vaidurya, వ జస క ః with diamonds, crystals and
pearls, మ మ ః studded with gems, తప టక ః made of molten gold,
జ మల ః pure white silver floors, ర కృత ః stairs-cases encrusted with vaidurya,
నర ం ః covered with crystal grains, సంజవ ః with lovely quadrangles,
ఞ బ ణస ౖ ః echoing with sounds of Krauncha birds and Peacocks, జహంస ః inhabited
by royal swans, ఖ sky, ఉత వ rising into the sky, ః auspicious, భరణ ః filled
with sounds of musical instruments, సర తః all over, ప resounding, వ క రప
like the replica of the city of Vaswokasara, ఖ sky, ఉత ఇవ as if risen, that, ల ం
నగ city of Lanka, gazing, జహర rejoiced.

Surveying all over, Hanuman was wonder-struck to see as though it was leaping into the sky. The city had
golden shutters, altars encrusted with vaidurya, mansions inlaid with diamonds, crystals, pearls and other
gems, crowned with pure gold and silver. The staircases built with silver were studded with vaidurya. The
beautiful quadrangles, coverd with grains of crystal were as though leaping into the air. It echoed with
sounds of krauncha birds, peacocks and royal swans. Filled with sounds of musical instruments, it resembled
the city of Vaswokasara.
ంస ంర ం ప ః .

అ త మృ ం న స ర ৷৷5.3.13৷৷

ర valiant, అ త excellent, ఋ prosperous, ర enchanting,

auspicious, ప ః of the king of demons, ం that city, స gazing, న స
reflected:

Gazing at the enchanting, auspicious, prosperous city of the king of demons mighty Hanuman began to
reflect:
యమ న నగ శ ధర ంబ .

ర వణబ ద ధ ః৷৷5.3.14৷৷

ఉద ధ ః ready to fight, వణబ ః by Ravana's forces, ర protected, ఇయం నగ this

city, అ న by others, బ with force, ధర to attack, న శ not posible.

'It is not possible to attack this city by to outsiders as it is protected by the forces of Ravana with their
weapons ready(to attack).
ఙద ణస మ క ః.

ప యం భ న ద ర ৷৷5.3.15৷৷

ఇయ this, ః land, ఙద by Kumuda and Angada, మ క ః of the great vanara,

ణస for Sushena, న ద ర for Mainda and Dvivida also, ప may be accessible,

'This land can be reached by Kumuda and Angada or the great vanara Sushena and even by Mainda and

వస తస జస హ శ శపర ణః.

ఋ స క ఖ స మమ వగ ర ৷৷5.3.16৷৷

వస తః Sun's, త జస of the son, హ ః monkey's, శపర ణః of Kushaparva, క ఖ స of the

chief of vanaras, లస for Ketumala, ఋ స for Riksha (Jambavan) also, మమ వ for me also,
గ ః within reach, భ will be.

'Son of Vivaswan (Sugriva), the chief of vanaras, Kushaparva, Riksha (Jambavan) and myself also will be
able to reach this place.
స మ ఘవస ప కమ .

ల ణస చ నమభవ క ః৷৷5.3.17৷৷

క ః vanara, మ : long-armed, ఘవస Raghava's, ప కమ valour, ల ణస Lakshmana's,

నం చ valiant advances, స after considering, pleased, అభవ felt.

Reflecting upon the valour of long-armed Rama and valiant advances of Lakshmana Hamuman felt pleased
(within himself).
ం రత వస ం వతంస .

య రస మృ ం పమ వ ৷৷5.3.18৷৷

ం నష ం ౖ స శ మ గృ ః.

నగ ం నస స దదర మ క ః৷৷5.3.19৷৷

సః మ క ః the great vanara, రత వస clad in robes studded with gems, వతంస

stable houses as her ear-rings, య armouries, ఋ breasts, ornamented,
పమ వ like a young maiden, ౖ : by glittering ones, స శ by glowing, మ గృ ః by great
mansions, న ష dispelled darkness, hero, నస demon king's, నగ city, దదర
saw.

Hanuman looked at the city of the demon king, whose darkness was dispelled by bright gems and mighty
mansions as if it were a young maiden. The prosperous city was like a well decorated woman, adorned with
ornaments having walls for her dress,
the stables for her ear-rings, the armouries for her breasts.
థ హ లం ప శనం మ బల .

నగ న ణ దదర పవ త జ ৷৷5.3.20৷৷

అథ then, నగ that city, హ ల tiger among vanaras, మ బల of great prowess,

పవ త జ son of the Wind-god, ప శన while he entered, న in her real, ణ form, దదర
saw.

Assuming her real form the presiding deity of Lanka noticed the son of the Wind-god, the tiger among
vanaras of great prowess entering the city.
తం హ వరం దృ ల వణ .

స య తత కృ ననదర ৷৷5.3.21৷৷

వణ ruled by Ravana, ల that Lanka, తం హ వర that best of vanaras, త త there,

దృ after seeing, కృ ననదర appeared with a distorted face, స య వ herself, ఉ rose.

Seeing the best of vanaras, the deity of the city of Lanka, ruled by Ravana rose up before him in a distorted
form.
ర త వర స ర షత.

ఞ మ దమ బ త వ త జ ৷৷5.3.22৷৷

క వర స at the great vanara, ః of the son of the Wind-god, ర in front of, అ షత

stood, మ ద loud sound, ఞ while producing, పవ త జ to the son of the Wind-god,
అబ said.

She stood in front of the son of the Wind-god and spoke to him in a loud voice.
కస ం న చ ణ ఇహ వ లయ.

కథయ హ యతత ం వ ధర ৷৷5.3.23৷৷

వ లయ one who dwells in the forest, త you, కః who are you, న ణ for what purpose, ఇహ
here, పః arrived, your, ః life, వ until, ధర hold on, ఇహ here, తత truth, య
that, కథయస reveal.

"O dweller of the forest, who are you? Why did you come here? Speak the truth about your identity, so long
as you hold on to your life.
న శక ం ఖ యం ల ప ం నర త .

ర వణబ ర సమనతః৷৷5.3.24৷৷

నర vanara, వణబ ః by Ravana's army, ర protected, సమనతః everywhere, అ kept

secret, ఇయం ల this Lanka, త by you, ప to enter, న శక ం ఖ surely not possible.

"O vanara! this Lanka is a secret place protected by Ravana's army everywhere. It is surely not possible for
you to enter this city".
అథ మ బ హ న గతః .

కథ తత ం య ం త ం ప పృచ ৷৷5.3.25৷৷

అథ now, రః hero, హ Hanuman, అ గతః in front, standing, her, అ బ spoke,

య since, త you, me, ప పృచ you are enquiring, తత truly, to you, కథ
I will tell.

Then Hanuman who was standing in front of her said, "I will tell you the truth since you are asking me".
త ం పనయ ర వ ష .

మరం ం ర ర య ৷৷5.3.26৷৷

ర at the gate of the city, అవ ష stands, పనయ woman of ugly distorted eyes, త
you, who are, dreadful, me, after obstructing, మర why, ర ర య
threatening.

"Who are you, terrible woman of ugly, distorted eyes? Why are you obstructing me at the gate of the city?
Why do you impound upon me?
హ మద చనం ల మ .

ఉ చ వచనం ప షం పవ త జ ৷৷5.3.27৷৷

మ one who can assume any form at free will, ల that Lanka, హ మద చన
Hanuman's words, on hearing, enraged, పవ త జ son of Wind-god, ప ష harsh,
వచన words, ఉ చ spoke.

The spirit of Lanka who could assume any form at her will got enraged on hearing the words of Hanuman
and spake in a harsh tone.;
అహం స జస వణస మ త నః.

ఆ ప ర ర నగ ৷৷5.3.28৷৷

స జస demon king's, మ త నః of the great self, వణస Ravana's, ఆ ప waiting for his
orders, ర unassailable, అహ I, ఇ ం నగ this city, ర Iam protecting.

"In obedience to the orders of the great demon king, Ravana, I am protecting this unassailable city.
నశ మవ య ప ం నగ త .

అద ః ప త కః స ప హ మ ৷৷5.3.29৷৷

myself, అవ య after ignoring, నగ into this city, త by you, ప to enter, న శ

not possible, అద now, మ by me, హతః slayed, ః life, ప త కః giving up life, స ప you
will attain eternal sleep.

"It is not possible for you to enter this city ignoring my presence. Soon you will be killed. You will give up
your life and attain eternal sleep.
అహం నగ ల స య వ పవఙమ.

సర తః ప ర త క తం మ ৷৷5.3.30৷৷

పవఙమ monkey, అహ I, స య myself, ల నగ city of Lanka, సర తః all over, ప ర I

will be protecting, ఏత as such, to you, మ by me, క తం is told.

"O monkey! I am the presiding ogress of Lanka presenting myself personally. I am to protect this city. This is
my answer to you".
ల వచనం హ త జః.

యత న హ షః త లఇ పరః৷৷5.3.31৷৷

త జః son of the Wind-god, హ షః best of the monkeys, సః he, హ Hanuman,

ల ః Lanka's, వచన words, on hearing, యత he got ready, అపరః another, లః

On hearing the words of ogress of Lanka, the son of the Wind-god stood up ready and appeared like another
mountain.
స ం ప కృ ం దృష నర ఙవః.

ఆబ థ సత పవగరభః৷৷5.3.32৷৷

అథ and then, wise one, సత powerful, పవగరభః a bull among vanaras, నర ఙవః chief
of vanaras, సః that, ప కృ monster of a woman, her, దృ after seeing, ఆబ
spoke.

Seeing the monster of a woman, the powerful Hanuman, bull among vanaras endowed with wisdom spoke to
her.
ద నగ ం ల ం ట ర ర .

శఙ మం కం పశ సవ ం పత .

ఇత ర హ సం పః పరం హలం ৷৷5.3.33৷৷

ట ర ర market-places, ramparts and gateways, శఙ freely, ఇమం కం this world,

ల ం నగ Lanka city, ద I see, ఇత ర for this reason, ఇహ here, సం పః I came here,
to myself, పర great, హలం curiosity

"I would like to see this Lanka with market-places, gateways and ramparts. I have come here for that
purpose. My curiosity has been roused to see this place.
వ పవ హల ః న చ.

సర గృహ ద గమనం ৷৷5.3.34৷৷

ల ః Lanka's, వ gardens, ఉపవ groves, న చ and even forests, సర తః all over,

గృహ important houses, ద to see, ఇహ here, myself, ఆగమనం have arrived.

"I have arrived here to see Lanka's gardens, groves and forests and also all the important houses".
తస తద చనం ల మ .

య ఏవ న క ంబ ప ర ৷৷5.3.35৷৷

మ one who can assume any form at free will, ల Lanka, తస his, త that, వచన words,
after hearing, నః again, యః ఏవ more, క words, ప ర in harsh words,
బ spoke.

On hearing Hanuman, the ogress of Lanka, who could assume any form, replied in harsh words:
మ త శ ర ం.

న శక మద ద ం యం న ధమ৷৷5.3.36৷৷

O evil-minded one!, న ధమ foolish monkey, me, అ త without conquering me,

శ ర ం ruled by the demon king, ఇయం this city, అద now, ద to see, by you,

"O evil-minded, foolish monkey! It is not possible for you to enter the city ruled by Ravana, the king of
demons without conquering me".
తతః స క ల చ చ .

దృ ంభ న య గత ৷৷5.3.37৷৷

తతః then, సః that, క ల: tiger among monkeys, her, చ night-walker, ఉ చ said,

భ O noble one, ఇ this, city, దృ after seeing, నః again, య గత as I came,
I will go .

The tiger among monkeys said to the, the night-walker "O noble Lanka! I shall see this city and go back".
తతః కృ మ దం ల భ వహ .

త న నర షం డ స ৷৷5.3.38৷৷

తతః then, ల that Lanka, భ వహ frightening, మ ద loud noise, కృ after making,

with speed, నర ష best vanara, త న with her palm, డ స struck.

Then the ogress of Lanka made a loud and frightening sound and struck the most powerful vanara with the
palm of her hand.
తతః స క లఙ భృశ .

న ద మ దం ర పవ త జః৷৷5.3.39৷৷

తతః then, లఙ by Lanka, భృశ very much (badly), తః hit, ర heroic one, పవ త జః
son of the Wind-god, సః క లః that tiger among vanaras, మ ద loud noise, న ద made.

At this strong slap, the heroic Hanuman, son of the Wind-god roared loudly.
తతః సంవర స మహసస ః.

జ ంహ ధ తః৷৷5.3.40৷৷

మన న ధః స యం కృతః.

తతః then, సః that, హ Hanuman, ధ తః overcome by anger, మహసస left hand,

అ ః fingers, సంవర స clenched, ఏ her, with his fist, అ జ న hit her, చ
ఇ that she is a woman, మన న considering, స య himself, అ ధః outrageous, న కృతః did
not develop.

Overcome by anger, Hanuman clenched the fingers of his left hand and hit her with his fist. Considering her
to be, after all, a woman he did not turn outrageous.
న ప ణ హ చ ৷৷5.3.41৷৷

ప త సహ కృ ననదర .

that, చ night roamer, న ప ణ that stroke, హ her limbs shattered, సహ at

once, on the, ప త fell, కృ ననదర with her face distorted.

Struck by the blow of Hanuman the demoness fell down on the ground at once, her limbs shattered, her face
distorted.
తత హ జ ం దృ ৷৷5.3.42৷৷

కృ ంచ ర జ మన నః యం .

తతః then, జః wise, జ brilliaint, హ Hanuman, fallen woman, her,

దృ after seeing, her, య is a woman, మన నః thinking in the mind, కృ
compassion, చ ర showed.

Wise and brilliant Hanuman, seeing the deity fallen down, left her (without killing her) out of compassion,
thinking that she is a woman, after all.
త భృశసం ల గద ర ৷৷5.3.43৷৷

ఉ గ తం క ంహ మ న ం ప వ ఙమ .

తతః then, that, ల Lanka, భృశసం greatly agitated, గద ర with choked voice,
అగ త deflated of pride, క these words, పవఙమ to the monkey, హ మన to Hanuman,
ఉ చ said.

Thereafter, the deflated demoness of Lanka with an agitated voice, said to Hanuman, the monkey-hero:
ప ద మ యస హ సతమ ৷৷5.3.44৷৷

సమ మ ష సత వ మ బ ః.

మ O long-armed, హ సతమ great monkey, ప ద be gracious, యస save me, మ

త న
noble, స వ ః hero of great strength, మ బ ః strong, సమ when the time comes, ష abide.

"O, strong-shouldered great monkey! be gracious. Save me. Heroes endowed with great strength stay back
when the time comes.
అహం నగ ల స య వ పవఙమ৷৷5.3.45৷৷

హం త ర క ణమ బల.

పవఙమ O monkey!, అహం I, on my part, స య self, ల నగ వ city of Lanka itself, మ బల

O strong one, ర O hero, అహ I, త by you, క ణ with valour, won.

"O monkey! I am Lanka incarnate. You have conquered me by your strength and valour.
ఇదం తథ ం శృ వ హ శ ర৷৷5.3.46৷৷

స యం దతం వర నం య మమ.

హ శ ర O lord of vanaras!, in the past, మమ to me, స యం by the creator Brahma, య as,

వర న a boon, దత given, ఇద this, తథ ం it is true, వ while I tell you, to my
self, శృ listen.

"O lord of vanaras! in the past Creator Brahma had given me a boon which has come true. I will tell you.

త త యం ర ం భయ గత .

య when, క one, నరః vanara, క by his prowess, you, వశ ఆన

vanquishes you,త then, for demons, భయ danger, ఆగత will set in, త by you,
య know.

'When a vanara vanquishes you by his prowess, you may know that destruction of ogres will set in.
స సమయః మ ద తవ దర ৷৷5.3.48৷৷

స యం తః స నత వ కమః.

మ O gentle one!, అద today, తవ your, దర by your appearance, my, సః సమయః

that time, పః approached, స యం తః this is ordained by Brahma, సత ః it is ture, తస his
words, వ కమః a different course of action, not possible.

"O gentle one! the time ordained by Brahma has come today with your presence here. The truth revealed by
Brahma, the self-born, cannot be proved otherwise.
తం జ వణస త నః৷৷5.3.49৷৷

ర ం వస ం శః స గతః.

త నః of the evil-minded, జః of the king, వణస Ravana's, స of all, ర ం చ and

demons, త caused by Sita, శః ruin, స గతః has come.

"The ruin of all demons and evil-minded king Ravana will take place due to (the abduction of) Sita.
తత శ హ ష ం వణ ৷৷5.3.50৷৷

ధత సర హ ఞ .

హ ష O great vanara!, త therefore, వణ ruled by Ravana, city, ప శ after

entering, ఇహ here, whatever, ఞ you wish to do, సర all works, ధత
undertake.

"O great vanara! enter the city ruled by Ravana and accomplish your purpose.
ప శ పహ ం హ శ ర ం ం స ఖ .

యదృచ త ం జన త ంస ం ర సర త గ య ఖ ৷৷5.3.51৷৷

హ శ ర O lord of vanaras!, పహ doomed by curse, స ఖ ruled by the demon

chief, auspicious, city, యదృచ freely, ప శ on entering, త you, సర త all
over, గతః gone, య ఖ with pleasure, స a chaste lady, జన త daughter of Janaka,
రస search.

"O lord of vanaras! you may search for the chaste lady, daughter of king Janaka all over freely entering this
doomed city, ruled by the chief of demons.

క సతమః monkey chief, మ ః mighty, మ ః of strong shoulders, సః హ that

Hanuman, మ who can assume any form at free will, excellent, ం ల that deity
of Lanka, క ణ by his prowess, త having won, అ ణ by the rear entrance, ర
boundary, అ leapt over.

Hanuman, the strong-shouldered, mighty monkey chief having defeated the (presiding) deity of Lanka who
could assume any form at her will, leaped over the boundary wall of the rear entrance of the excellent city by
his prowess.
ప శ నగ ం ల ంక జ తంకరః৷৷5.4.2৷৷

చ థ దం సవ ం చ శ ంస ర .

క జ తంకరః one who wishes the welfare of the king of monkeys, సః he, ల ం నగ Lanka city,
ప శ entered, అథ then, శ of enemy, ర forehead, సవ ం ద left foot, చ placed.

Hanuman, a devotee of the king of monkeys entered the city of Lanka placing his left foot first on the
forehead of the city and proceeded (by tradition one enters the enemy's dwelling by placing the left foot first
to cause defeat of the enemy).
ప షః సత సమ ం త జః৷৷5.4.3৷৷

సమ పథ య ష త .

తత ం ంల ంర మ య క ః৷৷5.4.4৷৷

సత సమ న ః endowed with great strength, సః త జః that son of the Wind-god, at

night, ష త set with flowers of pearls, మ పథ highway, ఆ య having made way,
ప షః entered, తతః then, క ః monkey, that, ర enchanting, ల ం Lanka city,
అ య went.

The son of the Wind-god, endowed with great strength, entered the enchanting Lanka and walked along the
highway set with flowers of pearls.
హ త ృష న ర ష రస ః.

వ ం శ శ వజ ల ః৷৷5.4.5৷৷

గృహ ః ర బ ః.

హ త ృష న ః filled with sounds of laughter, ర ష రః స ః reverberating with sounds of

musical instruments, వ ం శ శ by those comparable to the goads of diamonds,

వజ ల ః adorned with diamond lattices, గృహ ః the houses like clouds, ర beautiful,
city, అ ః with clouds, వ like the sky, బ was shining.

The houses reverberating with sounds of laughter and of musical instruments, decorated with lattice windows
of diamonds resembled the sky shining with clouds with a goad made of diamond (thunderbolt of Indra).
పజ లత ల ర గణగృ ః ః৷৷5.4.6৷৷

భసదృ ః పద స కసం ః.

వర నగృ సర తః ৷৷5.4.7৷৷

తతః then, భసదృ ః resembling white clouds, ః with paintings, పద స కసం ః with lotus,
swastika marks engraved, ః by auspicious ones, ర గణగృ ః by the houses of demons,
వర నగృ by auspicious houses, సర తః all over, very well decorated, పజ ల
glittering.

The city of Lanka appeared radiant with its tall mansions resembling white clouds. The mansions had
auspicious marks of lotus and swastika engraved on them and were opening in the direction of the south.
ం త భర ం క జ తఙ రః.

ఘ రం చర దదర చ ననన చ৷৷5.4.8৷৷

క జ తఙ రః the wellwisher of the vanara king (Sugriva), prosperous, ఘ ర for

Raghava, చర looked around, త భర with colourful garland, that city, దదర saw,
చ and, ననన చ felt glad.

Glorious Hanuman, well-wisher of Sugriva, king of vanaras, looked around the city, decorated with colourful
garlands. Surveying it for the cause of Raghava, he was greatly delighted.
భవ ద వనం గచ దదర పవ త జః.

కృ భవ తతసతః৷৷5.4.9৷৷

భవ from one building, భవన to another building, గచ going, పవ త జః Hanuman, తతసతః

here and there, కృ different kinds of structures, భవ buildings, దదర saw.

Going from one building to another, Hanuman saw mansions of different kinds structures.
వ మ రం తం నస ర త .

ం మదసమృ ం ప ర వ৷৷5.4.10৷৷

in heaven, అప ర వ just like apsaras, మదసమృ of intoxicated ones, of

women, న from the three levels namely chest, neck, head and three pitches known as Mandra, Madhya
and Tara, స ర త decorated with swara (musical voice),
మ ర melodious, త song, వ heard.

He heard melodious songs of intoxicated women set to tune in three places namely chest, throat and head and
three pitches known as mandra (slow) madhya (medium) and tara (high). The songs resembled those of the
apsarasas well set in musical notes set to music.

అ త ంశ ంశ తతసతః.

మ of great persons, భవ in the mansions, నద sounds of bells worn on the

waist, anklets, స న sounds, న న ం వ sounds of climbing steps,
అ త ంశ sounds of clapping of hands, ంశ sounds of people joking, తతసతః
everywhere, వ heard.

Great Hanuman heard the jingling sounds of waist bells and anklets of women and sounds of great men
climbing up and down flights of steps, sounds of clapping and joking everywhere in the mansions.
వ జప ం త త మ ర గృ ৷৷5.4.12৷৷

య ర ం వ దదర సః.

వణసవసం గర న ৷৷5.4.13৷৷

త త there, ర గృ in the demons' houses, జప of those chanting, మ sacred (verses) words,

వ heard, సః he, య ర of those engaged in the study of Vedas continuously,
of demons, దదర saw, వణసవసం those engaged in the eulogy of Ravana,
గరతః of those shouting, న even the demons, దదర saw.

He heard chantings of sacred verses in the houses of demons engaged in the study of the vedas. And heard
demons singing loudly the eulogy of Ravana.
జ రం స వృత తం ర బలం మహ .

దదర మధ వణస చ బ ৷৷5.4.14৷৷

మధ in the midst, in the city, జ ర highway, స వృత surrounding, త stationed,

మహ great, ర బల army of demons, వణస of Ravana, బ many, చ spies, దదర
observed.

He observed large contingents of demons lining the highway and spies of Ravana stationed in the middle of
the city.
జ మ ర ససః.

దర పహర న ంస ৷৷5.4.15৷৷

not so hunch-backed, న మ neither very short, nor too hideous,
బ ంశ in many forms, ంశ good-looking ones, వర సః of good-looking
countenance, ధ holding banners, ప న వ and flags, holding several kinds of
weapons, దదర saw.

Going around Lanka, Hanuman witnessed all kinds of demons; priests who were performing rituals, ascetics
with matted hair, some with shaven heads, and some robed in cow-hides. Some were holding fistfuls of
darbha grass (as weapons), others held sacrificial tools (as weapons), some had mallets, some hammers and
others had staff and spikes. Some looked frightful with a single eye, some with a single ear, some with
drooping stomachs and sagging breasts and in distorted forms. Similarly some dwarfs and some wielding
iron weapons, their bodies covered with wonderful shields; some not very tall or short, not stout or thin, not
very dark and not with hideous forms or mutilated bodies. Some had good-looking countenances, some were
seen holding posts and flags and weapons of several kinds.
శ వృ ం వప శ ణః৷৷5.4.20৷৷

The great monkey saw the demons who held shaktis and trees as weapons (Shakti is a lance), some held
three-pointed spears, missiles and slings with which missiles are hurled. Some of them wore flower garlands,
smeared unguents on their body and were bedecked with choicest ornaments. They were dressed in several

ways and many of them moved freely. They were very strong and held sharp tridents and armed with
thunderbolt-like weapons.

demons, శత హ స one hundred thousand, అవ గ vigilant, మధ మ midst, ఆర army,

Hanuman saw in front of the harem one hundred thousand strong, vigilant soldiers of a middle rank ordered
by the lord of demons.

The great monkey observed the huge archway of the demon king's palace made of gold situated on top of the
mountain as if scraping the sky, circled by moats full of white lotuses appearing as though the moats were
decorated with ear-ornaments. The whole city was encircled by a boundary wall.

And then the great vanara entered the wonderful mansion that resembled heaven. It was resonating with
pleasing sounds of jingling ornaments made more noisy by the neighing of the horses. There were carriages,
chariots, flying chariots, horses and elephants. The beautiful entrance was looking splendid with intoxicated
animals and birds. That place looked splendid with four-tusked elephants resembling heaps of white clouds.
The beautiful entrance was guarded by thousands of valiant demons.
స మ నదచ క లం మ ర మ న .

ప ర చన కం స వ నః ర శ৷৷5.4.29৷৷

సః he, స మ with gold, నదచ క ల walls polished with gold,

మ ర మ న decorated with precious pearl strings throughout,
ప ర చన క sprinkled with best of fragrants of sandal, వ నః ర harem of Ravana,
ఆ శ entered.

Hanuman entered the harem of Ravana surrounded by walls of gold inlaid with precious pearls and other
gems and sprinkled with excellent black agaru and sandal water.

Thus ends the fourth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.

boundary, అ leapt over.

Hanuman, the strong-shouldered, mighty monkey chief having defeated the (presiding) deity of Lanka who
could assume any form at her will, leaped over the boundary wall of the rear entrance of the excellent city by
his prowess.
ప శ నగ ం ల ంక జ తంకరః৷৷5.4.2৷৷

చ థ దం సవ ం చ శ ంస ర .

క జ తంకరః one who wishes the welfare of the king of monkeys, సః he, ల ం నగ Lanka city,
ప శ entered, అథ then, శ of enemy, ర forehead, సవ ం ద left foot, చ placed.

Hanuman, a devotee of the king of monkeys entered the city of Lanka placing his left foot first on the
forehead of the city and proceeded (by tradition one enters the enemy's dwelling by placing the left foot first
to cause defeat of the enemy).

The son of the Wind-god, endowed with great strength, entered the enchanting Lanka and walked along the
highway set with flowers of pearls.
హ త ృష న ర ష రస ః.

గృహ ః ర బ ః.

హ త ృష న ః filled with sounds of laughter, ర ష రః స ః reverberating with sounds of

musical instruments, వ ం శ శ by those comparable to the goads of diamonds,
వజ ల ః adorned with diamond lattices, గృహ ః the houses like clouds, ర beautiful,
city, అ ః with clouds, వ like the sky, బ was shining.

The houses reverberating with sounds of laughter and of musical instruments, decorated with lattice windows
of diamonds resembled the sky shining with clouds with a goad made of diamond (thunderbolt of Indra).
పజ లత ల ర గణగృ ః ః৷৷5.4.6৷৷

భసదృ ః పద స కసం ః.

వర నగృ సర తః ৷৷5.4.7৷৷

తతః then, భసదృ ః resembling white clouds, ః with paintings, పద స కసం ః with lotus,
swastika marks engraved, ః by auspicious ones, ర గణగృ ః by the houses of demons,
వర నగృ by auspicious houses, సర తః all over, very well decorated, పజ ల
glittering.

The city of Lanka appeared radiant with its tall mansions resembling white clouds. The mansions had
auspicious marks of lotus and swastika engraved on them and were opening in the direction of the south.
ం త భర ం క జ తఙ రః.

ఘ రం చర దదర చ ననన చ৷৷5.4.8৷৷

క జ తఙ రః the wellwisher of the vanara king (Sugriva), prosperous, ఘ ర for

Raghava, చర looked around, త భర with colourful garland, that city, దదర saw,
చ and, ననన చ felt glad.

Glorious Hanuman, well-wisher of Sugriva, king of vanaras, looked around the city, decorated with colourful
garlands. Surveying it for the cause of Raghava, he was greatly delighted.
భవ ద వనం గచ దదర పవ త జః.

Going from one building to another, Hanuman saw mansions of different kinds structures.

in heaven, అప ర వ just like apsaras, మదసమృ of intoxicated ones, of

women, న from the three levels namely chest, neck, head and three pitches known as Mandra, Madhya
and Tara, స ర త decorated with swara (musical voice),
మ ర melodious, త song, వ heard.

He heard melodious songs of intoxicated women set to tune in three places namely chest, throat and head and
three pitches known as mandra (slow) madhya (medium) and tara (high). The songs resembled those of the
apsarasas well set in musical notes set to music.
వ నదం ం చ, ఃస న .

న న ం వ భవ మ త ৷৷5.4.11৷৷

అ త ంశ ంశ తతసతః.

మ of great persons, భవ in the mansions, నద sounds of bells worn on the

waist, anklets, స న sounds, న న ం వ sounds of climbing steps,
అ త ంశ sounds of clapping of hands, ంశ sounds of people joking, తతసతః
everywhere, వ heard.

Great Hanuman heard the jingling sounds of waist bells and anklets of women and sounds of great men
climbing up and down flights of steps, sounds of clapping and joking everywhere in the mansions.
వ జప ం త త మ ర గృ ৷৷5.4.12৷৷

య ర ం వ దదర సః.

వణసవసం గర న ৷৷5.4.13৷৷

త త there, ర గృ in the demons' houses, జప of those chanting, మ sacred (verses) words,

వ heard, సః he, య ర of those engaged in the study of Vedas continuously,
of demons, దదర saw, వణసవసం those engaged in the eulogy of Ravana,
గరతః of those shouting, న even the demons, దదర saw.

He heard chantings of sacred verses in the houses of demons engaged in the study of the vedas. And heard
demons singing loudly the eulogy of Ravana.
జ రం స వృత తం ర బలం మహ .

Then intelligent Hanuman observed the Moon in the central part of the sky spreading a canopy of his

luminescence like the Sun, and looking like an intoxicated mighty (white) bull moving in a stable.
కస శయనం మ ద ం స ధయన .

స జయనం దదర ం మ న ৷৷5.5.2৷৷

augmenting the ocean even, స all, creatures, జయన illuminating,
అ న moving forward (the earth, space and sky), ం Moon, దదర saw.

While moving forward, Hanuman saw the Moon spreading his light, thereby warding off the agony of all
creatures, causing the swelling of the ocean and illuminating the earth as well as the sky.
ల మ నర త ప చ గర .

త వ చ ష ర ర జ కర ৷৷5.5.3৷৷

on earth, that, ల ః splendour (beauty), మనర found on Mandara mountain,

glows, త so also, ప at dusk, గర found in the ocean, త వ the same, in
water, ష ర in lotuses in the lakes, such, కర is found in beautiful Moon, ర జ shone.

'The same splendour on the Mandara mountain on earth, which glows at dusk lay on the ocean is there, on
lotuses in the lakes and on the beautiful Moon also.
హం య జతపఞరసః ం య మనరకనరసః.

య గ త ఞరస చ బ జత మ రసః৷৷5.5.4৷৷

జతపఞరసః found in a silver cage, హంసః swan, య like that, మనరకనరసః in the caves of
Mandara mountain, ంహః lion, య like that, గ త ఞరసః mounted on a proud elephant, రః hero,
య like, అమ రసః in the sky, చ నః Moon, త in the same way, బ జ looked very lustrous.

'Like a swan in a cage of silver, like a lion in a cave of Mandara mountain, like a hero on a proud, intoxicated
elephant, the Moon shone in the sky.
తః క వ శృ మ చలః త ఇ చ శృఙః.

హ వ నదబదశృ ర జ చ నః ప రశృఙః৷৷5.5.5৷৷

శృఙః lofty peaks, తః remaining, క వ horned bull, ఉచ శృఙః tall peaks, తః white,
మ చలః great mountain, నదబదశృఙః gold plated tusks, హ వ like elephant, ప రశృఙః
complete with horn, చ నః Moon, ర జ shone.

The full-moon with its horn-like spot shone like a bull with sharp horns, like the white Himalayan mountain
with its lofty peaks, and like an elephant with gold plated tusks;
నష రప మ గహ హ నషపఙ ః.

నష రపఙ ః with the dew formed with frost, మ గహ హ నషపఙ ః the frost
destroyed by the great planet (Sun), ప శల శయ ర ఙ ః the clean surface resting on graceful

The Moon shone bright like a lion mounted on a rock, like a lordly elephant in a deep forest, like a king on
attaining the kingdom.

ప శచ దయనష షః the darkness dispelled with the rise of the radiant Moon,
పవృతర ః శ షః dark deeds dispelled, canibals started by their movement,
త త షః the natural instinct for love among women is incited, భగ resplendent
Moon, ప షః dusk, స ర ప శః spread its bliss like heaven every where.

At the time of moon-rise, the darkness of dusk is dispelled, the dark deeds of cannibals disappear, the natural
instinct for love returns to women as the radiance of the Moon spreads everywhere like in heaven.

కర ః pleasing to the ears, త స ః sounds of string instruments, పవృ ః started, వృ ః

ప intellectuals, who were sweet in expression, సం శద who had

faith in religion, జగతః in the world, ప pre-eminent, heroes of different kinds,

He saw there in the city of Lanka, demons, who were intellectuals, pleasing in words, with faith in religion,
pre-eminent heroes of the world of different kinds, followers of good practices and with lovely names.

Hanuman could not find Sita anywhere, an excellent lady born in a noble royal family, adopting the right
path, a lady delicate like a blossoming creeper of good breed, or so he imagined.

స త the eternal, వర on the path, స abiding, a lady of beautiful eyes,

మద overwhelmed by love, మ prosperous, భ ః husband's, మనః in mind,

స ever, a distinguished demoness, her, న దదర not seen.

'Sita must have had a pair of beautiful eyes. She must have been a passionate lady with mind fixed on her
glorious husband. Ever established in dharma, she is perhaps a distinguished lady compared to her
counterparts (in Lanka).

She would be like a barely visible ray of the Moon, like a streak of gold covered with dust, like an unhealed
scar of a wound caused by an arrow only superficially covered and like a flake of cloud swept off by the
wind.
మపశ మ శ రస మస ప ం వద ం వరస .

బ వ ః హత రస పవఙ మన ఇ రస ৷৷5.5.27৷৷

పవఙమః monkey, వద among those who are good at speech, వరస of the best ones, మ శ రస
of the lord of men, మస Rama's, ప wife, Sta, రస for a short while, అపశ not able
to find, ః న
తః hit by grief, అ రస for a while, మ ః ఇవ as though dull, బ వ became.

Hanuman stood grief-stricken, having (unsuccessfully) searched for a long time for the wife of Rama, the
lord of men. The highly eloquent was now despondent. For a while he looked dull and dejected.

Thus ends the fifth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.

She would be like a barely visible ray of the Moon, like a streak of gold covered with dust, like an unhealed
scar of a wound caused by an arrow only superficially covered and like a flake of cloud swept off by the
wind.

పవఙమః monkey, వద among those who are good at speech, వరస of the best ones, మ శ రస

Hanuman stood grief-stricken, having (unsuccessfully) searched for a long time for the wife of Rama, the
lord of men. The highly eloquent was now despondent. For a while he looked dull and dejected.

chariots, ల భరణ ఇ వ considered the very jewel of Lanka, సః that, మ క ఃgreat vanara,

moved

Hanuman, the great monkey, saw the royal mansion looking brilliant with elephants, horses and chariots. He
thought that the palace was the very ornament of Lanka. He moved unnoticed into the close quarters of
Ravana.
గృ దృహం చ నరః.

హ సం తసః ంశ చ ర సః৷৷5.6.16৷৷

of the demons', గృ గృహ from one house to the other, ఉ చ and pleasure
gardens, నర: vanara, ణః observing, అసం తసః undaunted, ంశ and the mansions,
చ ర ranged

Hanuman ranged undaunted from one mansion to another including the pleasure gardens.
అవ త మ గః పహసస శన .

త న శ మ ర స ర ৷৷5.6.17৷৷

మ ర ః mighty, మ గః of great speed, పహసస Prahasta's, శన house, అవ త jumping

from there, తతః then, మ ర స Mahaparshva, అన other, శ houses, leaped

Courageous and swift, Hanuman sprang from Prahasta's house to Mahaparshva's, and so on.
అథ ఘ ప శం మ కర శన .

షణస చ త సమ క ః৷৷5.6.18৷৷

అథ and then, సః that, మ క ః great vanara, ఘ ప appearing like a cloud,

మ కర శన the residence of Kumbhakarna, త then, షణస Vibhisana's, leaped

Then the great vanara leaped from the residence of Kumbhakarna which looked like a cloud to Vibhishana's.

The brilliant leader of monkeys bounded to the house of Suka, to the clever Sarana's and to Indrajit's.

త జః son of the Wind-god, మ య ః illustrious, మ క ః great monkey, సః హ

Hanuman, మ in lofty places, in several places, భవ in mansions, క వ in order,
కమ ణః while he was advancing, ఋ మ of the wealthy ones, their, ఋ wealth,

The illustrious son of the Wind-god jumped from house to house in an order and saw the wealth of the
wealthy in the lofty mansions.
స ం సమ కమ భవ సమనతః.

ఆస థల ద శన ৷৷5.6.28৷৷

then, న శన residence of lord of demons, ఆస ద reached

Passing all the mansions, the lucky Hanuman reached the residence of the demon king, Ravana.

The heroic and powerful vanara saw at Ravana's residence demonesses with hideous eyes guarding the bed
and an army of demons holding tridents, hammers, powerful javelins and iron cudgels.

ఘసన ర సమ ప ః.

మ జ of good speed, హ ం horses also, well-bred ones, పసమ good-
looking, పరగ those whch were not inferior to enemy's elephants, గ elephants, గజ
in training elephants, exceedingly well-trained, ఐ వతస equal to Airavata, in battle,
పర of enemy forces, హ destroyers, రతః shedding, య clouds like,
సవతః pouring forth rut, య like mountains, ఘ trumpeting like a group of
clouds, సమ in war, ప ః by enemies, ర unassailable, గ elephants, దదర saw

He saw horses of high speed in red, white and cream colours. He saw beautiful, well-bred elephants, which
were not inferior to the enemy's. They were well-trained and had proved equal to Airavata (Indra's elephant)
in battles. Resembling the thundering clouds, they were unassailable to the enemy in war and were
trumpeting like a cluster of clouds.
సహ సం సత నదప ష ృ ః৷৷5.6.34৷৷

మ లప చ స త స ః.

దదర నస వణస శ ৷৷5.6.35৷৷

He saw in the palace of Ravana, the demon king, thousands of troops adorned with gold, fully protected with
armour of gold shining like the morning Sun.

The son of the Wind-god saw at the palace of Ravana, the lord of demons, colourful palanquins of several
kinds, bowers, picture galleries, spots for sporting, hillocks (artificial) made of wood, apartments for
romance, for pleasures and day time activities.

built by skilled craftsmen with great care, తప ః of Siva, the lord of all creatures, గృహ వ like home,
భవ తమ magnificent mansion, సమనతః every where, అ కరత స ర full of gems,
ల treasure troves, దదర saw

Comparable to mount Mandara, it was crowded with peacocks, set with flag staffs fixed all over, magnificent
mansions built by skilled craftsmen with great efforts, decked with gems of several kinds, rich with treasures
comparable to Kailasa, the home of Siva, the Lord of all beings.
అ ర ం జ వణస చ৷৷5.6.40৷৷

ర థత శ ర వర ః.

త that, శ place, ర of the gems, అ by the wonderful hues of gems, వణస

Ravana's, జ చ and with brightness, అథ there, ర ః with rays, ర వ like the brightness of
Sunrays, ర జ shone

The palace of Ravana looked splendid with gems of different hues and with Ravana's presence, it was
shining like the radiant Sun-god.
నదమ న శయ స చ৷৷5.6.41৷৷

జ చ దదర హ థపః.

హ థపః vanara leader, నదమ వ made of Jambunada gold, శయ beds, ఆస

చ seats, chief, జ vessels, దదర saw

The leader of the vanaras saw there beds, seats and main vessels made of gold.

with hundreds of exquisite women, ఢక with well-laid apartments, మ గృహ lofty palace,
హ Hanuman, ప శ entered

Hanuman entered the delightful, lofty palace comparable to Kubera's mansion. It was filled with vessels
encrusted with gems scattered all over. The floor was drenched with liquor. It was resonating with sounds of
golden anklets of women and of drums. The rows of mansions, lofty palaces with well-laid apartments were
full of hundreds of exquisite women.
ఇ మ య ఆ నర షషస రః৷৷
Thus ends the sixth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
