NOVENA
AND HOLY HOUR
FOR FORGIVENESS
Compiled by

SPECIAL PERSONAL NOVENA PRAYERS
FOR FORGIVENESS
METHODOLOGY:
b. Our Father
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy
name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on
earth as it is in heaven.
c. Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the
fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
i. Closing Prayer
Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the
treasury of compassion - inexhaustible, look kindly
upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in
difficult moments we might not despair nor become
despondent, but with great confidence submit
ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and
Mercy itself. Amen.
A clear mark of men and women of God is the peace in their souls.
They possess peace and they transmit peace to those with whom
they have dealings.
The Forge, no. 649
INTENTION
Lord, you know how much I desire to have your peace within me.
But I know very well that I cannot obtain it as long as I harbor
bitterness and resentment in my heart, like wounds that never heal
over.
I would like to be able to say what Saint Paul said: “forbearing one
another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each
other... And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts” (Col 3:13.15).
Without your help, Lord, by my efforts alone, I will never be able to
attain that peace.
Put yourself always in your neighbour‟s shoes. You will then see the
various issues or problems calmly. You will not get annoyed. You
will be understanding. You will make allowances and will correct
people when and as required. And you will fill the world with
charity.
The Forge, no. 958
INTENTION
Jesus, you see how difficult I find it to understand others, to see the
best in them and forgive their faults when they upset me and hurt
me.
I ask you for the grace to fulfill your command: “Judge not, and you
will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned;
forgive, and you will be forgiven” (Lk 6:37).
You know, Lord, that often the first thing I notice about people is
the negative things, the things that annoy me, that I see as
ridiculous or unbearable. And so I develop the vice of thinking and
speaking badly about others.
INTENTION
Lord, it‟s true that I pray, and ask you to forgive me, but I still don‟t
forgive those who offend me. Forgive me for disdaining the words
of your Son Jesus, which I say so often when I pray the Our Father:
“forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against
us” (Matt 6:12).
I realize that if I were sincere, beneath all that hardness I would see
my own pride. I recognize that I am touchy, I take offense easily, I
take the things people say or do the wrong way, and the slightest
insinuation upsets me... And you, Jesus: how did you behave when
people treated you badly? What do you do to me when I mistreat
you with my sins? I know perfectly well that every time I go and
confess my sins, you say to me: “I absolve you.”
10 | S p e c i a l P e r s o n a l N o v e n a a n d H o l y H o u r f o r F o r g i v e n e s s
Lord, I don‟t want to be a hypocrite! Through Saint Josemaría‟s
intercession, grant me the grace to be humble, as an indispensable
condition for learning to forgive.
Never correct anyone while you are still indignant about a fault
committed. Wait until the next day, or even longer. And then,
calmly, and with a purer intention, make your reprimand. You will
gain more by one friendly word than by a three-hour quarrel.
Control your temper.
The Way, no. 10
INTENTION
I think, Jesus, about your words “learn from me; for I am gentle and
lowly in heart” (Matt 11:29). And then I think about myself: my
irritations, my sharpness, the anger that boils up inside me, the
conviction that it‟s fine to be hard on other people because “I‟m
right”.
Saint Paul said: “Let all bitterness and wrath (…) and slander be put
away from you” (Eph 4:31). Saint Josemaría responded to slander
with a constant attitude of “keeping quiet, working, forgiving, and
smiling”.

Heart of Jesus, meek and humble, through Saint Josemaría‟s
intercession, make my heart like your own.
Men do not scandalize God. He can put up with all our infidelities.
Christ is Passing By, no. 64
INTENTION
My God, I know that resentment is a wound that self-love and pride
keep open and stir up in the heart; it is gangrene, carefully
cultivated in the soul by hatred. It scares me, my God, because I
have discovered it inside myself, rooted there like a cancer.
Someone once said that resentment is the devil‟s oven. They were
right. I too feel that it is a cursed fire that incinerates the love,
understanding and peace that should always mark the relationships
of God‟s children.
Free me from it, Jesus! Help me to get rid of this disease through
frequent Confession. Grant me, through Saint Josemaría‟s
intercession, the strength from Heaven to forgive and forget.
14 | S p e c i a l P e r s o n a l N o v e n a a n d H o l y H o u r f o r F o r g i v e n e s s
May I never harbour resentment. Instead, may I leave my bitterness
within your Heart and learn there how to say: “Father, forgive
them!” (Lk 23:34).
Our love has to be a dedicated love, practiced every day and made
up of a thousand little details of understanding, hidden sacrifice
and unnoticed self-giving.
Christ is Passing By, no. 36
Remain silent, and you will never regret it: speak, and you often
will.
The Way, no. 639
INTENTION
My God, you know that I find it really hard to forgive people‟s
inconsiderateness towards me, their thoughtlessness, disrespect,
impatience and impoliteness; and you know that I find it even
harder to admit that I too fall into those same faults. I ask you,
through Saint Josemaría‟s intercession, for help to overcome my
exaggerated self-esteem and to practice what Saint Paul tells us:
“with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one
another in love” (Eph 4:2).
Set me free, Lord, from obstinately thinking that only I know what
is right; from being rude, getting impatient over little faults, and
arguing about unimportant things... I ask you for the charity to be
able to keep silent, smile, put a good face on things, and say I‟m
sorry when I have corrected someone sharply. And if need be, I ask
16 | S p e c i a l P e r s o n a l N o v e n a a n d H o l y H o u r f o r F o r g i v e n e s s
you for the heroic forgiveness with which you received Judas in the
garden as he was betraying you.
It was the Lord who took the initiative by coming out to meet us. He
gave us this example.
Friends of God, no. 228
INTENTION
O God, Father of Mercy, I open the Gospel and see that Jesus is
asking me always to take the first step to reconciliation, to be the
first to say sorry and offer forgiveness. “Leave your gift there before
the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother” (Matt 5:24).
It is only fair for you to ask me to do what you did yourself. Indeed,
Saint Paul says that “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”
(Rm 5:8). My God, how hard I find it to take that first step when I
am convinced that I‟m right, that I am the one who was offended! It
seems something superhuman.
TO OUR FALLING again and again into evil, Jesus responds with
his determination to redeem us, with an abundance of forgiveness.
The Way of the Cross, 7th Station
Get used to replying to those poor “haters”, when they pelt you
with stones, by pelting them with Hail Marys.
The Forge, no. 650
INTENTION
Good Jesus, I recognize that when I feel offended the desire to
retaliate starts to boil up inside me. Exactly what you did not do!
How difficult it is to subdue the fantasy of the little or big acts of
revenge constructed by my imagination! And yet I know that I
should be thinking about forgiving!
Lord, when I feel like that, bring to my mind your words: “Love
your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matt 5:44);
and the words of Saint Paul: “Do not be overcome by evil, but
overcome evil with good” (Rm 12:21).

DAY 9 – For Our Lady’s Help
INTENTION
Mother of Mercy, Comforter of the afflicted, Refuge of sinners, you
were united to the sacrifice of Jesus when he shed his Blood on the
Cross to cleanse us from our sins: take pity on us poor sinners,
when we cannot manage to forgive.
Enfold us, Mother, in your embrace like small children; calm our
anger with your smile; obtain for us from your Son the gift of
forgiving, forgetting, and not stirring up grudges; and also of loving
and wishing well those who do not wish us well. Lead us, Mother,
as Saint Josemaría prayed, deep into the Sacred and Merciful Heart
of Jesus.

THE LITANY OF FORGIVENESS
Lord Jesus Christ, you said: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs
is the Kingdom of heaven.
Yet we are preoccupied with money and worldly goods and put our
trust in what we possess rather than in your care for us.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.
Lord Jesus Christ, you said: Blessed are the gentle, for they shall
inherit the earth.
Yet we are so concerned about our own rights and self-interest and
so little concerned about serving others.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.
Lord Jesus Christ, you said: Blessed are those who mourn, for they
shall be comforted.
Yet we are impatient under our burdens and unconcerned about the
burdens of others.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.
Lord Jesus Christ, you said: Blessed are they who hunger and thirst
for righteousness, for they shall have their fill.
Yet we do not thirst for you, the fountain of all holiness, and we are
satisfied with half-measures and mediocrity.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.
Lord Jesus Christ, you said: Blessed are the merciful for they shall
receive mercy.
Yet we are so quick to condemn, so slow to forgive.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.
Lord Jesus Christ, you said: Blessed are the pure of heart, for they
shall see God.
Yet we have often regarded persons created in your image as objects
of our own lusts and cannot raise our eyes to you.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.
Lord, Jesus Christ, you said: Blessed are those who suffer
persecution for holiness' sake, for the Kingdom of God is theirs.
Yet we suffer no opposition because we have been ashamed of you,
our Crucified Savior, and have lived worldly compromises of your
Gospel.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

THE LITANY OF INTERIOR PEACE
Let us pray. Pour forth Thy grace into our hearts, we beseech Thee, O
Lord, that we who refrain from sin by self-denial, may be afflicted in
time rather than condemned to eternal punishment, through Our
Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Let us pray. Lord Jesus, reconciling us to each other and to God, pour
out your Spirit upon us that there may be a real work of
reconciliation in our midst now.
We give thanks for every good relationship and seek your mercy for
relationships which went wrong, whoever was at fault. May your
mercy cover any harm or hurt which these whom we have
remembered did to us or we to them.
Now with this work of reconciliation begun, we would pray as one family,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; thy kingdom
come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the
glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Blessing and sending out at the end of this act of worship and reflection,
we remind ourselves that it is the pain and loss of terrible experiences in
our lives or in the lives of those for whom we care and whom we seek to
support that has brought us together. In these moments we have looked
again into the darkness and acknowledged that terrible things have
happened. We have reminded each other of the possibility of God’s presence
in our suffering, of his grace and love, and of the hope and possibilities of
experiencing the joy of life again. Let us go from here with a sense of
renewal, knowing that in spite of the loss and suffering of the days that
have passed, we can begin or continue to live anew, that we can rise above
the sorrows of the past and once again experience joy in living. Let us
intend to bear our losses and our enduring pain through a keen sense of the
closeness of God, by raising our hearts, and by finding in each moment,
each person we meet, each act of kindness or moment of beauty, hope for
today and the strength to go on. And so….may the peace of God, which
passes all understanding, keep our hearts and minds in the knowledge and
love of God and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; And the blessing of God,
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, Remain with us always. Amen.
After receiving the Holy Communion, recite the following before praying
for personal intentions:
Stay with me, Lord, for it is necessary to have You present so that I
do not forget You. You know how easily I abandon You.
Stay with me, Lord, because I am weak and I need Your strength,
that I may not fall so often.
Stay with me, Lord, for You are my life, and without You, I am
without fervor.
28 | S p e c i a l P e r s o n a l N o v e n a a n d H o l y H o u r f o r F o r g i v e n e s s
Stay with me, Lord, for You are my light, and without You, I am in
darkness.
Stay with me, Lord, so that I hear Your voice and follow You.
Stay with me, Lord, for I desire to love You very much, and always
be in Your company.
Stay with me, Lord, for as poor as my soul is, I want it to be a place
of consolation for You, a nest of love.
Stay with me, Jesus, for it is getting late and the day is coming to a
close, and life passes; death, judgment, eternity approaches. It is
necessary to renew my strength, so that I will not stop along the
way and for that, I need You.
Stay with me tonight, Jesus, in life with all its dangers. I need You.
Stay with me, Lord, for it is You alone I look for, Your Love, Your
Grace, Your Will, Your Heart, Your Spirit, because I love You and
ask no other reward but to love You more and more.
With a firm love, I will love You with all my heart while on earth
and continue to love You perfectly during all eternity. Amen

SPECIAL PERSONAL HOLY HOUR FOR
FORGIVENESS
METHODOLOGY:
2. This Holy Hour shall be done at least one hour before the Holy
Mass. Lighting of the candle is optional.
3. The prayers to be used for this Holy Hour are adapted from
the Holy Hour of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus by
Sacred Heart Institute Inc., Winona, Minnesota, USA. A rosary
should accompany the Holy Hour prayers especially on the
part of praying the Sorrowful Mysteries.
I. OPENING PRAYERS
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
As we now bring fire to this candle-wick, making it glow with light, may
we also bring the fire of love to this time of prayer and worship.
May this holy candle send forth dancing rays like sunrise on the most
glorious morning, and may these rays of light encircle us and those we
love.
32 | S p e c i a l P e r s o n a l N o v e n a a n d H o l y H o u r f o r F o r g i v e n e s s
We give you thanks O God, for this happy moment and we ask that
as we are as one, in this circle of light, we may always be one with
you in the circle of your loving presence.
Come, O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in
them the fire of Thy love. Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be
created, and Thou shall renew the face of the earth.
O God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit, didst instruct the hearts
of the faithful, grant that in the same Holy Spirit we may be truly
wise, and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Act of Contrition
34 | S p e c i a l P e r s o n a l N o v e n a a n d H o l y H o u r f o r F o r g i v e n e s s
My Lord Jesus Christ, it is Thy great love for men that keeps Thee
day and night in this Sacrament, full of pity and love, expecting,
inviting, and welcoming all who visit Thee. I believe that Thou art
really present in the Sacrament of the Altar. From the depth of my
nothingness, I adore Thee; and I thank Thee for the many graces
Thou hast given me, especially for the gift of Thyself in this
Sacrament, for the gift of Thy most holy Mother as my intercessor,
and for the privilege of visiting Thee in this Church.
I intercede with Thee for the Souls in Purgatory, especially for those
who were most devoted to the Blessed Sacrament, and to Thy most
holy Mother. I recommend to Thee also, all poor sinners. And lastly,
my dear Savior, I unite all my desires with the desires of Thy most
loving Heart. Thus united, I present them to Thine Eternal Father,
and beg Him in Thy Name and for love of Thee, to hear and answer
them.
Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make our Jesus, hearts like unto
Thine.
O MY GOD, I firmly believe that Thou art one God in Three Divine
Persons, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. I believe that Thy Divine Son
became Man, and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge
the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the
Holy Catholic Church teaches, because Thou hast revealed them,
Who can neither deceive nor be deceived.
Act of Hope
Act of Love
O MY GOD, I love Thee above all things, with my whole heart and
soul, because Thou art all-good and worthy of all love. I love my
neighbor as myself for the love of Thee. I forgive all who have
injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured.
I love Thee above all things that can be loved, above all pleasures,
and in fine above myself and all that is not Thee, protesting in the
presence of Heaven and earth that I will live and die purely and
simply in Thy holy love, and that if to love Thee thus I must endure
persecution and suffering, I am perfectly satisfied, and I will ever
say with St. Paul: “Nothing shall separate me from the love of
Christ.”
Jesus, King and Center of all hearts, through the advent of Thy
Kingdom, grant us peace.
The more Thy mysteries are blasphemed, the more firmly we shall
believe them, O Sacred Heart of Jesus!
The more hearts resist Thy Divine attractions, the more we shall
love Thee, O infinitely amiable Heart of Jesus!
The more unbelief attacks Thy Divinity, the more humbly and
profoundly we shall adore It, O Divine Heart of Jesus!
The more Thy holy laws are transgressed and ignored, the more we
shall delight to observe them, O most holy Heart of Jesus!
The more Thy Sacraments are despised and abandoned, the more
frequently we shall receive them with love and reverence, O most
liberal Heart of Jesus!
38 | S p e c i a l P e r s o n a l N o v e n a a n d H o l y H o u r f o r F o r g i v e n e s s
The more the imitation of Thy virtues is neglected and forgotten, the
more we shall endeavor to practice them, O Heart, model of every
virtue!
The more the devil labors to destroy souls, the more we shall be
inflamed with desire to save them, O Heart of Jesus, zealous Lover
of souls!
The more sin and impurity destroy the image of God in man, the
more we shall try by purity of life to be a living temple of the Holy
Spirit, O Heart of Jesus!
The more Thy Holy Church is despised, the more we shall endeavor
to be her faithful children, O Sweet Heart of Jesus!
The more Thy Vicar on earth is persecuted, the more will we honor
him as the infallible head of Thy Holy Church, show our fidelity
and pray for him, O kingly Heart of Jesus!

III. TO JESUS ABANDONED
My soul, thou canst never conceive the sufferings, the insults and
indignities offered to our Blessed Lord during this scene of pain and
mockery.
O meek Lamb, Victim for sin! May Thy thorns penetrate my heart
with fervent love, that I may never cease to adore Thee as my God,
my King and my Savior.

My Crucified Jesus, mercifully accept the prayer which I now make
to Thee for help in the moment of my death, when at its approach
all my senses shall fail me.
When my parched lips can no longer kiss Thy most sacred wounds,
remember then those kisses which now I imprint on Thee, and have
mercy on me.
When my cold hands can no longer embrace Thy Cross, forget not
the affection with which I embrace it now, and have mercy on me.
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Wounds of our Lord Jesus Christ to
heal the wounds of our souls.
Sweet Heart of my Jesus, grant that I may ever love Thee more and
more.
Heart of Jesus, burning with love for us, inflame our hearts with
love of Thee!
Jesus, Supreme Pontiff of the New and Eternal Testament, Thou art
seated at the right hand of God as a perpetual Advocate for us and

Thy flock, Thou have deigned to place on the throne of Peter Thy
servant and Pontiff, Pope Francis. Make him, in the midst of the
wickedness of our times, mild in hostile attacks, strong in the
defense of the faith, and a gentle father and watchful master in the
pastoral office.
May Thy Kingdom come, Immortal King of the ages! May the truth,
which Thou hast brought from Heaven, reach even to the ends of
the earth. May the fire which Thou dost will to be cast upon the
earth inflame all hearts. This is the desire that is in the heart of Thy
vicar: a desire to reconcile all men to Thee; a desire for concord and
forgiveness among nations; a desire for justice and peace.
Jesus, enlighten Thy vicar. Strengthen him in his sorrows and in his
universal cares. Speak that powerful word, O Lord, which shall
change minds, turn hate into love, check the fury of human
passions, temper the sufferings, and dry the tears of those who are
in sorrow. Increase the virtue and the resignation of families and
pacify nations and peoples so that the Church built by Thee on Saint
Peter to gather all people around Thine altar of life and salvation,
may invoke Thee, adore Thee, and exalt Thee in peace forever.
Amen.
O God, the Shepherd and Ruler of all Thy faithful people, mercifully
look upon Thy servant Francis, whom Thou hast chosen as the chief
Shepherd to preside over Thy Church. We beg Thee to help him
edify, both by word and example, those over whom he has charge,
that he may reach everlasting life together with the flock entrusted
to him. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
O Heart of Love, I put all my trust in Thee, for I fear all things from
my own weakness, but I hope for all things from Thy goodness.

accompanied by a series of soft religious music.)
Eternal Father, I humbly adore and thank Thee for having created
me, and for having redeemed me by means of Jesus Christ. I thank
Thee for having made me a Christian by giving me the true faith,
and by adopting me for Thy child in holy Baptism. I thank Thee for
having given me time for repentance after my many sins, and for
having, as I hope, pardoned all my offenses against Thee.

but that we may always love Thee in this life and in the next.
Bless me, dear Lord, before I go. And bless not me alone, O Lord,
but all as well who are here present, and all who could not come,
especially the sick and the dying. Bless our homes and all the

Grant rest to the Souls of the faithful departed, and bring them into
